God forbid anyone has fun and is financially responsible. It is possible you know? Not everyone who spends is swimming in debt. You don’t know how those trips are funded and people tend to keep their financially affairs close to their chest especially if they have potentially envious siblings. You sound like my sister in law - snarky comments about our holidays or spending every time we meet her. We just smile and change the subject because we don’t owe her any explanation.

EdithBond · 05/01/2025 10:22

If my sister had been sharing the care of my late mother with me for 10 years from the ages of 20 to 30 I’d be encouraging her to enjoy all the freedom she missed out one while being a young carer. I’d want her to see the world as I did in my mid 20s.

It appears she took responsibility for caring for your mum when most other people are enjoying life before they settle down. Illness and bereavement teach us what’s important in life, which is to make the most of it and make memories while we can, as we never know what’s around the corner.

If your sister is hoping to have kids, IMHO it’s vital she spends a few years enjoying herself while she’s young and before she has to start being a carer again for the best part of 20 years. Otherwise, she’ll be in her late 50s before she gets to travel childfree again.

She has plenty of time to buy a home. Lots of people don’t buy their first home until mid to late 30s.

lljkk · 05/01/2025 10:23

It sounds like... She pays her bills, she earns her money honestly, sheesh! Let her have fun as she pleases.
If she moans at you about not owning property or being skint all the time THEN you have a case for pointing out that the travel is eating up a lot of money she could use for other things.

anyolddinosaur · 05/01/2025 10:23

Some people die young and their lack of a house does not matter then.

She has different priorities to you - that's her privilege. She should be doing something to offset that carbon footprint but she doesnt have children, adding an extra child to the world adds a big extra carbon footprint.

Maybe in a couple of years her priorities will change but for now non of your business.

Snowwaybaby · 05/01/2025 10:25

You sound jealous op

PinkyFlamingo · 05/01/2025 10:26

itssnowinginhere · 05/01/2025 08:38

It's my sister
Ever since she met her partner (2 years ago ) she's away all the time
Including meals out /cocktails etc
I just think she could be using her money more sensible ,instead of holidays etc

Thankfully as adults we get decide what to do with our own money eh. You sound a bit insufferable actually, it's not up to you to feel what is her "sensible" spending or not

MatchyMatchyGlasses · 05/01/2025 10:26

midgetastic · 05/01/2025 09:32

The carbon footprint is probably ridiculous but if she assume the world is going to boil, living more now is logical

It suggests a deep unhappiness in where she lives

Do you have children, @midgetastic?

Assuming you do, the OP’s sister will have to fly a hell of a lot more to create the carbon that you have.

Ilikewinter · 05/01/2025 10:28

OP you are either jealous, miserable with your own life or just posting crap in order to goad a response.

NonPlayerCharacter · 05/01/2025 10:28

It's nothing to do with you or anyone else but her and her partner. She's being true to herself. If it's really such a terrible way to live, she'll get her comeuppance in whatever way you think is inevitable and you will win out in the end for not being like her.

Alternatively you could try a bit of travelling since it's so obvious that you want to. Most of her trips are within the UK, it's not that hard to do.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 05/01/2025 10:28

As long as you can afford it, it's fine. She can choose what to spend her money on.

Last year I went to Thailand, India, Spain, France, Bermuda, Portugal, Ireland (4 times) and on a Mediterranean cruise. I also had several mini breaks in the UK.

I'm retired and comfortably off and I want to see the world before I get too frail. I've already got 5 big trips planned for this year and hope to add a few more.

MuthaHubbard · 05/01/2025 10:29

I travel a lot, it brings me joy and as far as I'm concerned, life is too short not to.

I've got 7 trips booked already for this year.

NiftyKoala · 05/01/2025 10:29

Unless you pay her bills it's really not your problem. Maybe take a trip of your own so you won't be as envious.

Relaxd · 05/01/2025 10:30

From your perspective and budget it may seem too much, but it isn’t your perspective or budget that is relevant here as it isn’t your money so definitely one to be a bit less obsessed or stressed over! They are also not exactly the most glamorous of destinations either so she may well be spreading the money out rather than a couple of trips to Japan and Australia etc.

ArkaParka · 05/01/2025 10:30

I went abroad 7 times last year. I work hard, have a well paying job and don’t have kids. I’m not sorry. Mind your own business!

Changingplace · 05/01/2025 10:31

itssnowinginhere · 05/01/2025 09:48

She is 33 no kids
Up until 3 years ago we both cared for our late mum as a full time thing
So I get she probably wants to live a bit as we had no life for 10 years but like I say to me she should be saving.
She doesn't own a house,they only rent

None of your business what she spends her money on, she probably thinks your life is dull and boring and you should get out more.

Tallying up someone else’s trips over a year is a bit weird, I’d have to think myself how many trips I did personally let alone what anyone else did!

Trifficultly · 05/01/2025 10:31

That's what my life was like before kids. Zero regrets, especially now I'm basically a snack bitch who spends time ferrying my lovely mini mes to various playgrounds. Live it up I say!!

BarbieKew · 05/01/2025 10:32

We did similar before kids, got some great bargains not being limited to school holidays only!

Lucky her.

When you are travelling, you are not 'embracing' the world and cultures - you are just travelling, that is all. This is semblance, not substance. Maybe you are eating local food too, but that is not culture. The most cultured person I met, with impeccable English and French, was a 60-year old private guide in the Hermitage in Leningrad in the 1990s. She never left the USSR, never felt the need, she studied languages, literature and art in depth there. She changed my idea of what 'embracing the world' and 'learning about cultures' should be.

You have to be pretty spectacularly ignorant to go to go somewhere else and fail to take anything in.

Even going to another city in the UK you take on different accents, food, history, art that shaped the area. Hell other towns within the same area (Peterlee built in brutalism in the 1960s vs Durham a 1000 year old religious city) is culture and they are a 30 minute bus ride apart.

culture
/ˈkʌltʃə/

noun
noun: culture; plural noun: cultures
1.
the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively.
"20th century popular culture"
2.
the ideas, customs, and social behavior of a particular people or society.
"African-Caribbean culture"

CarminaPiranha · 05/01/2025 10:34

Are you lonely? Do you resent her relationship with her BF? Perhaps the two of you could have a weekend away together - sounds like you need one. It's not your life - she is living hers - you are living yours. She is not doing anything wrong Why dod you feel the urge to control or micro manage her life? I don't want to be meant o you, but you are coming across as jealous - are you aware of that at all in yourself? Have a think.

Changingplace · 05/01/2025 10:36

Don’t be so pretentious, it’s very dull.

C152 · 05/01/2025 10:37

Well, there's always a balance to be had, but she's got no one to support other than herself and it sounds like you and she have both had a rough 10 years as carers. If she can afford the holidays, why shouldn't she? Presumably she takes her annual leave to do so, so they can't be that extravagant in terms of length of time away. Some of these trips can also be done in a weekend. There are plenty of people who try to make the most of time off by doing something every weekened or every few weeks. (Personally, I wouldn't count a trip to Newcastle as a holiday, but each to their own.)

IdgieThreadgoodeIsMyHeroine · 05/01/2025 10:37

Why do you care? Why do you think this is any of your business? Why do you think you should get any say over what she does with her money?

So many questions...

Do you have anyone to go away with and the funds to do it? It’s odd to judge your sister for enjoying her life, I don’t think she’s doing anything wrong here.

In 12 months !

Looking at the list of locations, and depending on whether they are UK based, the carbon footprint isn't nearly as bad as if they were doing numerous long haul round trips to the Americas and/or Asia in the course of a year.

On that basis the locations aren't ridiculous and I'd say they will have enjoyed a wonderful year of exploring those places, good luck to 'em!

ETA just seen your update - a bit judgement and sour grapes towards your sister, are you jealous of her by any chance ?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 05/01/2025 10:41

Is she asking you to pay for the holidays or for loans for bills because she's spent her money on holidays?
