Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

The M&S Chocolate and Hazelnut buche: cloyingly rich and tasted so strongly of hazelnuts it was inedible. A Yule log is my one big Christmas treat to myself, and at twice the price of a standard Yule log I was expecting it to be spectacular. I don't think I've ever binned a chocolate item in my life before. It pained me.

But big fan of egg boilers. They take all the 'is this boiling? Should the bubbles be bigger? When do I start the timer?' confusion away. I've had a jaunty yellow Minichicki (a German brand?) in the shape of a hen since about 1998 and it still does perfect soft boiled eggs.

I’m always doing this, being tempted by adverts for ‘best mascara ever’ and finding them nothing like as good as my old favourite, Max Factor 1000 Calorie

The best mascara ever is Benefit Rollerlash.

It’s the general “shittification” of consumer goods. An endless trend to reduce quality and longevity in pursuit of profit. Plus manufacturing is increasingly done in factories which are not set up to ensure quality levels (deliberate or otherwise). Especially electronics and clothes.

I’m increasingly only buying things second hand (whether from ebay or charity or vintage shop or auction) and making ‘treat’ food from scratch. Eg the difference in fabric and quality between clothes made in 2024 and clothes made in 1994, or even in 2004, from the same brand, is light and day.

I’m not especially good at baking and am time poor but it seems the only route to get nice tasting festive special food, and I want to learn as I don’t see this trend of disappointing premium Christmas treats reversing any time soon!

Agree. Shame on me but I normally buy the ruinously expensive ready made prawn cocktails from M&S for a starter on Christmas Day. For various reasons didn’t managed to get them this year and made my own. Ridiculously simple to make and nicer than the shop bought ones. Beating myself up for the stupid amount of money I’ve spent on ready made prawn cocktails over the years!

M&S Santa Popping down the Chimney dessert - tasted good but the gimmick was him upside down in the chimney but his legs had gone soggy, fallen off his bottom and ended up down the roof somewhere. Their extra special Yule log was dry and too sweet. Every year I book a manic in-store collection, spend a fortune and end up disappointed....memo to self, not this year!

We bought a load of stuff too - the yule log is dry, overly sweet and 'synthetic' tasting chocolate. The yorkshire puddings were ok, but just ok. Everything else was fine, but not fantastic or 'ooh I will buy this again' except the pack of vegan cheese I bought for a couple of veggie/vegan friends who all said it was really nice cheese and the non veggies who ate it (and didnt know) said how it was really tasty.

Im not doing it again this year.

You're not meant to do this long term as it's a fire hazard.

That doesn't really make sense. Why is it a fire hazard long term, but not short term?

Salter chocolatier bought for my DH as he loves his hit chocolate. Used it once, meh. Next day it didn't turn on.
I think this thread rather shows that gadgets are very often not worth the money!

Exactly the same happened to DD’s Ambiano hot chocolate maker. Returned and refunded. Fortunately it was an extra and not her only gift.

I got DS a PlayStation portal. Was his only big present.

What an expensive load of rubbish!

I love my portal! What is it that makes it rubbish? If it’s lagging has he tried plugging the internet cable into his PlayStation rather than using wifi (fixes most issues).

All of the M&S party food. Much of it was dry, tasteless cardboard.

I got a new hairdryer. It’s rubbish with very little power as it’s an eco one.

Eco-tech is no way near good enough yet to replace conventional tech. Wait 20 years.

I love Black Honey - have been wearing it for years.

Agree! At 54 years of age I still feel that a lipstick is too grown up for me, but this gives just the right amount of colour.

I honestly don't know for sure but I've definitely read it many times, e.g. page five here:

I think this describes virtually all of those prepared buffet foods these days. I've given up on them, they taste of nothing.
We just kept it really simple this time and went for meats, cheeses, chutneys, olives, potato salad, fresh bread, crackers etc. It was much nicer.

Crojo · 03/01/2025 08:40

My DC have these and they are a bit trial and error but can work well. They need to be well frozen in the freezer, if you take them out too soon they don't work, and also work best if the drink you put in is chilled first.

We first left it in for 12 hours then 24 then left it in the freezer for 3 days then used water out the fridge and nothing much happened, a very tiny amount of slush formed after 2 mins of squeezing but definitely not enough to call a slushy, definitely regret that purchase

Why did you wash them straight away? Were they dirty?

housethatbuiltme · 03/01/2025 10:05

Classic Vianetta was sold out everywhere so we got the Salted Caramel one instead which had loads left everywhere (should have been a clue).

Wasn't great, felt just like standard salted caramel ice cream - it didn't have the crunch and layers that usually Vienetta does and it all tasted exactly the same the topping layers and ice cream where all salted caramel (so just caramel on caramel, with more caramel). The taste of the salted caramel was too salty and not nice too.

PeachBlossom1234 · 03/01/2025 10:06

I got the Mark Hill air wrap thingy from Boots. Paid £139.99 for it, it went down to £80 (I think) and it's shit. I guess that's the reason that Dysons are £500ish lol

Simplepink · 03/01/2025 10:06

Air up bottles

Bluelagoondrmr · 03/01/2025 10:06

To be fair to the poster that melted the plastic with the Yorkshires. If it's the product linked earlier- i can see how the choice of into not on to in the instructions could make you think you use the tray (especially if you missed the remove all packaging). I think M&S would do well to review their instructions for clarity!

Place Yorkshire puddings into a preheated tray in centre of oven.

MiniPumpkin · 03/01/2025 10:08

we have had the Colin caterpillar for a few years but this year we decided not to as it’s not great . The kids were complaining on Xmas eve about it so I nipped to Sainsbury’s and got their version which is just as bad.
didn’t really enjoy turkey dinner either !

fluffy pjs which my dm insists on buying every year, I gently told her not to buy as they don’t get worn I’m just too hot in them.

ds got lots of plastic toys, half of the pieces have went everywhere and the flimsy plastic is crap 🤣

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/01/2025 10:10

Had largely successful year food wise - my big disaster was a compressor. Despite the best efforts of my local garage and a complete set of new tyres, I still lose pressure in one front tyre and have to take it down to the air machine roughly once a month to reinflate. Bought myself a handy little compressor to plug into the car and pump up the tyre - only to find that my in-car plug doesn't work. Bugger. I shall refrain from buying myself Christmas presents in future.

But I am sympathising with some of you. Despite the fact that I happily eat meals that have gone out of date by up to a week and have several duvets on which the poppers have been replaced by safety pins.

IHateWasps · 03/01/2025 10:10

They probably expect your average adult to know that clear plastic will melt in the oven.

ShodAndShadySenators · 03/01/2025 09:36

Isn't that standard for cheese when you heat it up, it goes gloopy? We buy these and use nice bread to scoop it up, it's lovely. But we do love hot melted cheese. Chorizo sounds like a nice flavour too

The plain cheese one from aldi is delicious

awishes · 03/01/2025 10:10

M and S party food, tasteless and expensive (and teeny, tiny) won't buy again

StMarie4me · 03/01/2025 10:11

Know just what you mean re that kind of fabric. Loathe it! Just why?!

IHateWasps · 03/01/2025 10:11

And indeed most plastic unless it specifically says that it’s oven safe.
