Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

I love my portal! What is it that makes it rubbish? If it’s lagging has he tried plugging the internet cable into his PlayStation rather than using wifi (fixes most issues).

Lagging that’s the word! Our WiFi is miles away from the console, perhaps that’s the issue? The actual ps5 works fine but the portal is rubbish in our house!

Grammarnut · 03/01/2025 10:12

@Givemethreerings is correct about quality having got worse. Built-in obsecelence is the go-to for a consumerist market economy, because there has to be a constant hole to fill. Also, profiteering by energy companies (impossible for countries to regulate because of globablization) makes manufacturing costs higher. All this was pointed out before rampant marketization of everything was rolled-out globally c. 2004. Going back is impossible - but the whole lot will implode at some point and (once again - does this on a regular cycle) globalization will recede. I don't think I will be posting on MN when it happens, but I feel deeply sorry for my GC and DC.

Yes! The way it goes on is shocking. I also thought I looked like a child who was experimenting. 🤣

I don't like Clinique make-up. I tried the almost lipstick and it was poor. It looked nice packaging-wise and when I first put it on, but I get better results from much cheaper brands.

Picklewicklepickle · 03/01/2025 10:13

Mine are all food related 😂

Sainsbury’s TTD Salted Caramel Yule Log was gross, threw most of it away (which pains me so much, I hate food waste).

Aldi special chocolate pannetone, didn’t realise it had chocolate creme in it which makes it too sickly. Might it turn into br era d and butter pudding.

Tesco Finest mini mince pies, too much bland pastry and not enough filling. The M&S ones were much better.

Sainsbury’s Pork Belly bites here too, a mushy mess! The battered fish rostis and mini beef wellingtons were great though.

Aldi Chicken Doughnuts (what was I thinking?!) the coating tasted of burnt.

Someone bought me the Terry’s milk chocolate “orange”, it was horrible. Gutted I didn’t get an actual chocolate orange as they are my favourite 😞

Vegetable spiraliser. What was I thinking?

Agreed they can be awful but then I read that Nigella uses one to spiralise potatoes and then fries them, making epic 'shoe string' fries. Honestly, it's the only good use of them!

For some reason many of the new cotton tops we have bought this year have immediately sprung small holes. Huh. Maybe we have bugs.

Larger purchase: my house.

When I had this with brand new tshirts as well as older, i was able to isolate the issue to the new -ish washing machine. We and the company did check the drum out - couldn't feel anything but the drum ended up being replaced. Now I have indoor cats the holes are again from a distinct source.

IHateWasps · 03/01/2025 10:16

Anyway the main thing is that poster is ok and that it was only her oven that suffered. She could have been very badly burned but thankfully that didn’t happen.

Crimpit toastie maker, absolutely tiny, great if you want half a toastie and to waste a whole slice of bread

Us too. I bought them for a stocking fillers for the male teenager. I thought you put the whole lot in the airfryer etc. No! It's just used for cutting and crimping. Nearly been relegated to the useless kitchen gadget section!

ThePure · 03/01/2025 07:42

Yes we had that disappointment too.

Same here for the Waitrose yule log. Too sweet and strangely unchocolatey? Are there any yule logs worth buying or will I have to make one!?

I’m always doing this, being tempted by adverts for ‘best mascara ever’ and finding them nothing like as good as my old favourite, Max Factor 1000 Calorie

Maybelline is usually good too. I don't care about fancy packaging, I want the stuff to stick on my eyelashes and stay there.
Been disappointed by too many expensive ones to try again.

M and S party food, tasteless and expensive (and teeny, tiny) won't buy again

Agree.

I hosted a family party and put on a buffet. All the cheeses, cold meats, smoked salmon, salad, olives, homemade dips, etc. were eaten. The expensive M&S mini pies and tarts were not finished, and some people even left then half eaten on their plates.

Lesson learned!

clowntown · 03/01/2025 10:32

I bought a beautiful new duvet cover , double to fit my double duvet. Put it on and there’s lots of spare material on side , checked box to see if it was definitely double and also measured and it is.
bought a king sized duvet and now that is far too big and is all bumfled up.

EcruCardigan · 03/01/2025 10:32

I didn't buy anything special other than mince pies. Don't bother with the mini pies - the pastry to filling ratio is not right.
Tesco Finest rum mince pies were great, not cheap but worth it.

I did buy lots of cheap veg, so ate healthily. Potatoes were bland and tasteless, but I don't really like all-rounders. Next year I'll get full price tasty ones.

I always really wanted a shark flex until I tried my friends. It wouldn’t grip my hair, created a ton of frizz and my normally curl holding hair (for days!) dropped the curls in a couple of hours 😐

But at least you hadn't shelled out for one!

TheSomething · 03/01/2025 10:35

I bought DS a pinball machine toy from B&M - doesn't work.
Not had chance to go back to B&M with it yet but bought a similar one from The Range - also doesn't work!

If anyone can recommend a toy pinball machine that does actually work my child would be most grateful.

To all you people having a go at the PP with ADHD re the egg boiler- stop being ableist! Would you tell a wheelchair user "why don't you just walk?".

ADHD is a disability and PP is finding appropriate adaptations. Stop telling her she's wrong!

MIL bought DD a Stanley, a special edition one branded with her favourite pop stars' name. Bloody thing isn't even water tight. I had no idea that some designs of them aren't water tight. She won't be able to take it to school, which she's disappointed about.

Edited

if it's the large one with the straw, you can buy different lids from amazon that make it watertight!

DW had the same issue, but these are great!

I add one of those tiny clear stoppers after attaching the earring backs as an additional safeguard. Works every time.
safety stoppers

Brilliant idea @kdramaqueen I never knew they existed. So much cheaper than the earrings and I lot less painful.

Oh no, I have these waiting in my fridge-I was really looking forward to having them 🙁

We had them from Sainsbury’s and they were delicious.Probably made at the same factory, we air fryed ours

Remington hair straighteners. The rigid cable has kinks in it and no matter how much I try to straighten it out it gets tangled around itself and any other electrical cable it is near. I hate it for this reason and have hated it every day for the last 3 years.

Life's too short. Just get some you're happy with (on Vinted, if you're feeling the pinch after Christmas).

Tubs of chocolates - all of them!

I bought Celebrations and Heroes, then someone brought Quality Street as a thank you, and my DS was given Roses from work.

When the tree comes down at the weekend, any remaining will be binned. I reckon there's the equivalent of 2 tins worth.

Just not nice! Even the Heroes, with the exception of plain dairy milk, were all horrible tasting.

I have put a note on my phone for September (as that's when I get sucked in and buy!) to not bother this year.

Don't bin good food FFS. Give them to a food bank if you don't want them. They will be a treat to others

Crimpit toastie maker, absolutely tiny, great if you want half a toastie and to waste a whole slice of bread

Oh dear I got these for the teens’ stockings and we haven’t used them yet!

my contribution: I got this coaster game where everyone has to do the challenge on their coaster and it flopped, no one did them!

I bought a Beetlejuice double bedding set from George at Asda, was so pleased with it...the first time I washed it on 40 degrees all of the poppers came off rendering it useless! Still gutted.

I'd take it back. We have that bedding and it's been fine!

@Shufflebumnessie what make was your box? We were considering the keter storage boxes for our cushions.

We have a keter for our outdoor cushions. It's brilliant, would recommend.

Examconfusion · 03/01/2025 10:49

Ugh I might send the Crimpits back after reading more posts.

also adding - Waitrose and Lidl party food. Didn’t enjoy any of it. We got the mini pies and a few other things.
