Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

My husband bought me some lovely (expensive) earrings. I’m always losing a single stud when the back falls off.

These have a screw on back. My god the pain when I put the first one in. I thought maybe the post was a bit big but the second earring got screwed into my ear and I couldn’t get it all the way through or out again without turning it like a screw.

I’ve had pierced ears for over forty years and have never had a problem.

Obviously, being earring you can’t return them. Awful design.

I add one of those tiny clear stoppers after attaching the earring backs as an additional safeguard. Works every time.

I got the M&S finest Yule log with fresh cream and needs to be kept in the fridge. It was delicious, sweet yes, but not dry. We had it with brandy cream.

The Tesco finest ones are cheaper but so dry you have to heat them up, get the chocolate runny and eat them with a dollop of cream to make them palatable. I resent paying over the odds when they tastes just like a glorified swiss roll.

It’s worth looking in charity shops for a big old sellotape dispenser. The tiny ones they make nowadays are rubbish. Our one is really weighty and makes wrapping so easy! Charity shops round here seem to have them a lot.

We bought one which is large and really heavy. It has saved our marriage for the past ten years of frantic christmas eve wrapping!

AhBiscuits · 03/01/2025 09:27

I've got both the small crimpit and the wrap one. The small one is great but only suitable for those little thins. I can't get the wrap one to close properly, even using all the tips and tricks, they just split open.

It’s the general “shittification” of consumer goods. An endless trend to reduce quality and longevity in pursuit of profit. Plus manufacturing is increasingly done in factories which are not set up to ensure quality levels (deliberate or otherwise). Especially electronics and clothes.

I’m increasingly only buying things second hand (whether from ebay or charity or vintage shop or auction) and making ‘treat’ food from scratch. Eg the difference in fabric and quality between clothes made in 2024 and clothes made in 1994, or even in 2004, from the same brand, is light and day.

I’m not especially good at baking and am time poor but it seems the only route to get nice tasting festive special food, and I want to learn as I don’t see this trend of disappointing premium Christmas treats reversing any time soon!

Waitrose Yule Log at £7 - just really average!

ASDA's Exceptional Yule log was tasteless too.

I bought one in card factory. £1.99 including a roll of tape. Good bit of weight to it too.

mumonthehill · 03/01/2025 09:29

Peacocks pj's green with gold stars over them. Fit so well and so comfortable but first wash all the stars washed away. Waitrose own boxes of chocolates, bought 2 of them and they were not very nice at all.

M&S mini Yorkshire puddings from their party food section.

Came in a plastic tray with individual "cups" for the Yorkshires.

Instructions clearly stated to cook in the tray (I checked)

The tray melted onto my large oven tray that came with my month old oven and DH spent a good hour on Boxing Day scraping off the plastic.

Surely there is no type of plastic that can be put in an oven? I looked up the ones filled with beef and it says remove all packaging.

Clinique lipsticks are the only lipsticks I use as they’re the only ones that don’t stick to my very dry lips, or make them dry and sore. However, the Black Honey is totally the opposite - worst lipstick I’ve ever had!! Also makes you look like a child who’s put in Mum’s lipstick as well, dreadful colour tone!

Yes! The way it goes on is shocking. I also thought I looked like a child who was experimenting. 🤣

Nope, I too was disappointed by the Toastie crimpit. I have both the standard one intended for thins and the toastie one and it is barely any bigger. So much wasted bread. And the wrap one is pants too 🙄

Agree with this. I bought wrap ones fir stocking fillers last year and they are such a faff no-one bothers. You have to put the wrap on the holder, microwave it to soften it, wet the edges, fold then cook. None of which is mentioned in the many, many ads I fell for.

pictoosh · 03/01/2025 09:34

I laughed at the poster who put the plastic tray in the oven with the mini yorkies (sorry). 😆
Think she skim read the cooking instructions.

Reminds me of a friend's flatmate years ago who forgot to remove the polystyrene disc from under his pizza and put it in the oven. Kin ell, what a mess!

Some plastic boxes for lasagne etc ready meals can go in the oven, so it's not unheard of.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2025 09:35

I love Black Honey - have been wearing it for years.

ShiftySquirrel · 03/01/2025 09:36

I highly recommend the sellotape on hand dispenser. I do most of the wrapping in this house and it took me years to find an acceptable one.

It stays on your hand so you don't lose it under reams of paper. And doesn't move when you're tearing a piece off - because it's on your hand. It's great.

For years I had a really crap one from the works I think. It wasn't heavy enough, so slipped about. I'd always put it down and not be able to find it and then it's final act of arseholery was to start leaking sand everywhere.

AhBiscuits · 03/01/2025 09:36

MIL bought DD a Stanley, a special edition one branded with her favourite pop stars' name. Bloody thing isn't even water tight. I had no idea that some designs of them aren't water tight. She won't be able to take it to school, which she's disappointed about.

Aldi baked cheese with chorizo in a terracotta pot. It was just gloop. Horrible

A heated hoodie DD gave to DH. What a swizz. There is just a tiny little USB poking out the pocket, and you have to use a power bank to heat it up. And no power bank comes with it. And of course that is in tiny little writing on the big box. I thought it would be just like a heated throw with a plug

Isn't that standard for cheese when you heat it up, it goes gloopy? We buy these and use nice bread to scoop it up, it's lovely. But we do love hot melted cheese. Chorizo sounds like a nice flavour too

Can't you just buy an adaptor?

You're not meant to do this long term as it's a fire hazard.

an iPhone14 from Music Magpie. They sent an iPhone 11 instead which I didn't realise when wrapping since there is no way of knowing until you turn it on. They are now saying it will take 10 days from sending it back to look into so now I have no iPhone 14, no £400, and no iPhone 11 either.

I wanted to buy a replacement and then let them refund the first purchase once they have checked it all but they won't even do that so poor DS is left with no christmas present.

Never ever use Music Magpie!

Try CEX - they always have plenty of i-Phones. 'B' condition items have always been fine for me but you can get 'mint' condition for a little more. Always had very good service from them, plus 24 month warranty. If you have an old phone, or for that matter other working tech you no longer want - you can trade it in - check the 'voucher' price on their website.

If it's the little square one, I think it's designed for the sandwich thins rather than normal bread?

If you want to make a toastie with thins you just buy these bags that go in a normal toaster. Works quite well.

HerRoyalNotness · 03/01/2025 04:14

Hypoallergenic earrings for DD, apparently made of medical grade stainless steel and coated in gold. Nope, flared her ears up and still recovering.

It is very likely nickel that she is allergic to and it is present in most stainless steel grades. Gold
is about the only thing I can wear and even that can be hit and miss. My ear piercing holes turn into an infected mess!

IHateWasps · 03/01/2025 09:40

Some plastic boxes for lasagne etc ready meals can go in the oven, so it's not unheard of.

True though even they tend to go a little soft but I would never expect the clear plastic containers that party food is usually produced in, to be suitable for the oven. Of course it’s going to melt.

I got my DB some heated socks , they came with a USA plug . I got a refund but socks are still useless.

Can you not buy an adapter for it?

I bought some expensive (for me) mascara and it is complete crap. I don't know if I got a bad one but it seems really dry.

I’m always doing this, being tempted by adverts for ‘best mascara ever’ and finding them nothing like as good as my old favourite, Max Factor 1000 Calorie
