Bought beautiful new bedsheets. Reduced in the sale, gorgeous colours with toadstools on them, felt ok in the shop.
Got them home, washed them and they have gone shiny 🤬 like the kind of static shiny so that your duvet ends up in a weird shape and you're rolled up like a stuck sweating pig.

Am absolutely gutted (and furious 😠) and hoping a trip to Homesense will cure me of my wierd shiny-bedsheet-hate.

M&S Santa Popping down the Chimney dessert - tasted good but the gimmick was him upside down in the chimney but his legs had gone soggy, fallen off his bottom and ended up down the roof somewhere. Their extra special Yule log was dry and too sweet. Every year I book a manic in-store collection, spend a fortune and end up disappointed....memo to self, not this year!

Yes I agree re the ‘extra special ‘ Yule log . The £15 one? Sickly - barely touched here . Fresh cream filling would have been much nicer but hard to find . I will have try making my own now !

Plus all the mini pies / quiches etc. But I’m always disappointed in ‘party food’

Moths definitely

I ordered two favourite meals (i.e. 4 mains) from a supermarket we rarely use, so that DH & I could have two special meals sometime this week - except they all expired on the day they were delivered so we had to have two identical meals two days running, straight away. Nice food, but annoying & not what I'd planned. And the supermarket didn't bother telling us they were short-dated.

I bought wax melts in the sale at another supermarket. The one which sounded nicer when I read the description turned out to be weird & pungent when opened, but at least the ones I didn't fancy much are actually really nice.

I complained when this happened to me as usually it’s on the receipt if they’re short dated. They refunded.

M & S Christmas food to order. We got the plant turkey - I didn't like the stuffing in the middle but accept that's a personal preference. The camembert ring and vegetable galette were mediocre. It cost just over 50 quid for these three items - I can't believe I willingly paid this price I don't know what I was thinking at the time I definitely won't do it again. I'll probably go with Sainsbury's taste the difference this year.
Also M&S had a weird collection thing going on this year where you collected your order from the food collection point and had to queue up again at the tills (all with massive queues) to have the food scanned and pay the balance. I love to know how much the employee who thought of this brainwave is paid!!

iRobot Hoover. Wanted one for years.

I love mine

Be aware the battery is rechargeable and doesn't last for ever. You can buy replacement on amazon

Do you have stone worktops in the new house?

I get holes in my top when I wear them with jeans, the jeans button scrapes the countertop and makes a hole.

It took me three years to work out it was my granite worktops. So many tops wasted including brand new cashmere jumper on Xmas day ….worn for ten minutes then five holes

My neice got a Crimpit, I asked her to report bqck with results but I see some are already in from PP...what a shame.

Oh bloody hell I bought DH one as well 🙄 he hasn't tried it yet.

Yule logs are actually quite easy to make! I use the Dove Farm recipe and don’t use their chocolate filling, I substitute thick cream, and then the chocolate filling on top. Not too sweet at all.

twobluehorses · 03/01/2025 09:05

an iPhone14 from Music Magpie. They sent an iPhone 11 instead which I didn't realise when wrapping since there is no way of knowing until you turn it on. They are now saying it will take 10 days from sending it back to look into so now I have no iPhone 14, no £400, and no iPhone 11 either.

I wanted to buy a replacement and then let them refund the first purchase once they have checked it all but they won't even do that so poor DS is left with no christmas present.

Never ever use Music Magpie!

DS got a ball game that's a small net trampoline thingy and two balls. You bounce it into the net and the next person thwacks it down again etc. Looked like great fun on the ad. A bit shit in reality.

Spikeball!
Best played with lots of players and lots of space.

Our M&S finest or whatever Yule Log was amazing!

KnickerlessFlannel · 03/01/2025 09:08

Yoto player for us - it doesn't even turn on. I tested it on re eivunf the parcel on 12th December, and it's taken until yesterday for them to agree a return, leaving dd (5) without a 'big'present for Christmas day. Their customer service is absolutely shocking and seems to be stuck in the absolute dark ages.

Notgoodatpoetrybutgreatatlit · 03/01/2025 09:09

I bought a book called a very festive murder. And lo it was awful! I read 20 odd pages then off to the book swop box in the next street it went. I hope someone else liked it.
I know books are personal preference but I'm an Agatha Christie/ Sherlock Holmes obsessive and crime novels have to reach high standards for me.
On the other hand I love Death in Paradise and Sister Boniface so I'm always looking for satire and humour. This book wasn't it. I've not been so angered since the Tory government was in power.

To balance the negativity though, the crumble topped cranberry and orange mince pies from Waitrose were divine!

I don't even like mince pies but these were delicious. I really hope they do them this Christmas too. Very, very slightly warmed with clotted cream - breakfast of gluttons champions.

OMG yes. Partner picked these up after Christmas reduced to £1 and they are amazing. I hope they do them again.

maldivemoment · 03/01/2025 07:43

@notedbiscuits no, definitely the regular ‘toastie’’ one. Same as others have observed, By the time you’ve sealed the bread & made the little toastie pocket, there’s a lot of wasted bread.

Is it designed for the smaller loaves? Only got the large wrap and thin one

ifIwerenotanandroid · 03/01/2025 02:16

The ones we ate the day they arrived were juuuust in date; the ones we ate the next day were already out of date. I didn't want to leave it longer than that.

@ifIwerenotanandroid If you still have the packets take a photo and ask them to refund. They shouldn’t send you stuff going out of date on the day.

2 lava lamps, one for each DC. Neither work.

They take ages to heat up - like four hours. Try turning one on after school and see if it's going before bedtime

I bought a Beetlejuice double bedding set from George at Asda, was so pleased with it...the first time I washed it on 40 degrees all of the poppers came off rendering it useless! Still gutted.

PITA, but if you don't want to return it to Asda as faulty then a set of metal poppers only costs a couple of quid and it's a very simple job to sew them on in front of the telly.

How hard is it to boil an egg in a pan?

It’s not hard to make a toastie in a pan either, but people still like toastie makers.

All of the Aldi party food! Have always got bits for the buffet from Aldi and it's always been nice enough on a budget. This year it was all tasteless rubbish, I swear it all tasted the same.
Got the New Year's day buffet food from Morrisons and it was so much nicer!

Can I add to the Aldi disappointment? We had friends coming on Christmas Eve and I bought a box of Aldi mini pies from their party food range. They were well within date but every time I opened the fridge there was a strange smell. There was nothing else it could have been, as I hadn't got any other Christmas food, so in the end I got them out and cooked them the weekend before. DH has a cast iron stomach so was designated taster and said they were fine although nothing special (and suffered no I'll effects) so we worked out it was the actual packaging that was causing the smell. I've never had that bed and it was very off putting.

Mumdiva99 · 03/01/2025 09:20

I bought the M&S slow cooked rib of beef with red wine and truffle jus for my Xmas entertaining. It cost £50. And when I opened it there was no sauce in it.
A call to Ocado later and they gave me £5 credit!!! It would cost more in parking and petrol to go and buy a replacement sauce from Sainsburys- as that was the only place I could see selling similar.
We had it with instant beef gravy out the cupboard instead.
The meat was great but somehow not as posh as if we'd had the Jus.

I do know how lucky I am that this was the worst thing to happen this Xmas. (Actually the worst thing was losing my voice for 3 days.)
Whilst it was irritating at the time, it didn't really spoil a lovely day with family.

Matildahoney · 03/01/2025 09:20

We were bought a Christmas Cuthbert, it was small, dry and overly sweet. DS regular birthday Colin a few days after was their standard lovely Colin and wasn't even dry after it was out of date.

Our M&S didn’t, we paid as we collected our order. However, our £85 turkey crown was disgusting! Never again.

No disappointments this year. I’m at an age where I’ve learnt my lessons. Only buy a few quality items that lasts that includes toys for my kids

Edited

I have been reading this thread with interest. I really struggle to buy Christmas presents because I gave up parting with money for tat a few years ago. I couldn't bear to see my hard-earned cash go down the tubes on items that were poor quality/didn't work/didn't live up to expectations/bought for the sake of having something/novelty value etc.
It's a scant handful of quality items for my lot now.

There haven't been many let-downs this year....maybe some of the food. The Tesco 'finest' yule log was pretty nasty, as was their 'finest' glazed ham joint.

AhBiscuits · 03/01/2025 09:24

I bought some expensive (for me) mascara and it is complete crap. I don't know if I got a bad one but it seems really dry.
