Excellent at reading aloud. Very sound on atheism.

What has he done to be knighted, ffs?

Celebrities are definitely overrepresented.

sunbum · 31/12/2024 15:11

Also, Mylene Klass, what has she done?

Married a rich guy, bragged about that wealth, had some kids, talked about the importance of music in schools? Must be something else? Surely?

SwedishEdith · 31/12/2024 15:12

Do you just get one eventually for being deemed a "national treasure"? I don't like him but can never quite articulate why.

Myleene Klass shocked me too. She has done fuck-all for society.

Most people who get 'honours' don't deserve it, moreso most of the 'famous' people who get them!

Mespher · 31/12/2024 15:14

Likewise, Gareth Southgate

SwedishEdith · 31/12/2024 15:14

Is there a list of people who've declined honours? I suppose you only know if they tell someone. And if you're a normal person, nominated by your colleagues, it probably feels churlish to turn it down.

YesExactlyYes · 31/12/2024 15:16

He's an unbearably pompous tit with far too high an opinion of himself.

I'm okay with Southgate getting one. England has been its most successful for years under him. He must have done something right.

TickingAlongNicely · 31/12/2024 15:17

Stephen Fry for work on mental health
Mylenne was miscarriage charity

InfoSecInTheCity · 31/12/2024 15:18

Myleene Klass is on it because of all her work as an ambassador for Tommy's and representing Women's healthcare needs.

Stephen Fry for the work that he does raising awareness of Bipolar Disorder.

Can’t say I’ve ever understood why people like him….hes hardly talented in any shape or form…is it his ‘accent’ ?

It says clearly in all the coverage why she was chosen - she's campaigned extensively for miscarriage awareness and the changes to the Women's Health Strategy in parliament. She does a lot for Tommys especially in Baby Loss Week.

So do lots of women.

SabreIsMyFave · 31/12/2024 15:21

But plenty of people do things for various charities, and community groups, (and their community in general.) What makes Myleene so special? Confused

Is it just because she is famous? Seems like it. If she did whatever it is she does, and she wasn't famous, she would very likely get no recognition from anyone.

sunbum · 31/12/2024 15:21

And she can't do that much as I had no idea, despite having experienced miscarriage and having lots of friends who have.

Well yes, it was for something else 🙄

She didn't marry a rich guy. She married a user but is divorced and engaged to her youngest child's father.

mitogoshigg · 31/12/2024 15:25

They are no less worthy than "are a politician", "ran a successful company" "won a race" or any other of the high profile awards. The more interesting ones are to the many ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.

Stephen Fry definitely deserves it for the many things he's done, more than "was manager of the not winning English football team!"

I don’t think you’re ever told who nominated you.

Edited

Lots of users are rich guys!

whathaveiforgotten · 31/12/2024 15:27

I'm sorry you've experienced miscarriage too @sunbum Flowers

You said about her: "Married a rich guy, bragged about that wealth, had some kids, talked about the importance of music in schools? Must be something else? Surely?"

It sounded like you were asking what the reason for her award was so I just shared the reasons that have been reported. I haven't said she does more than other women?

I guess it's subjective as to whether people agree each individual award is the right call or not 🤷🏻‍♀️

Personally I couldn't in good conscience take any award from the royal family so I've got no particular skin in the game!
