I’m Scottish so it’s the law that we Have Steak pie, mashed potatoes and peas😂
The beef’s been in the slow cooker since 8am and is just about hitting the falling apart stage 🤤, and tomorrow it’ll get a puff pastry lid before going in the oven.
Thinking I may break slightly with tradition and do roast potatoes as well as mash.
When my parents were around it was always trifle for pudding, but no real fans now, so I’ve just made a Biscoff cheesecake which is LUSH.

Whats on your menu?

We’re having Greggs festive bakes with double cream mash & broccoli

WTFWilma · 01/01/2025 10:11

English, married to a Scot, so steak pie, mashed potato, peas. Tempted to make a trifle now!

Merrow · 01/01/2025 10:38

Thanks @Jeezitneverends, I'll order when I'm home!

I'm breaking with the roast tradition this year and doing veg lasagne as it's a family favourite.

My DH ( despite going on about how his family come from Scotland) has never had a New Year's Day meal before he met me. I find that odd.

DreamSpaceships · 01/01/2025 10:42

I always used to do a big roast but that’s fallen by the wayside a bit in recent years. I’m doing Nando’s style chicken today.

LuLuRN · 01/01/2025 10:43

Scottish so steak pie for us, mash & turnip though not peas & maybe a cheeky few roast potato's as well.

Our local steak pie supplier has a drive through collection point to pick up your New Year order..

Wishihadanalgorithm · 01/01/2025 10:44

We have another roast dinner. Beef with everything including pigs in blankets and devils on horseback. Dessert is left over Christmas cake or Christmas pudding.

Growing up, New Year’s Day was always a big roast dinner and I’ve kept the tradition going.

Pushkinia · 01/01/2025 10:49

Also Scottish (living in England) and making steak pie! Haven’t decided on potatoes yet. Mash is traditional but I make terrible mash so might do roasties instead. Veg will be whatever is in the freezer drawer plus spring cabbage for my Dad (who loves it).

we have a chocolate fudge Yule log from Christmas which hasn’t been started yet, so that’s dessert sorted. It was always a trifle when I was young but I’m not a big fan of it.

romany4 · 01/01/2025 10:52

I always do a full roast dinner for New Years Day.

Roast beef, roast tatties, yorkshire puddings. The lot . Yum!

My parents always did a roast on New Years Day and I've carried on the tradition.

Optigan · 01/01/2025 10:53

We're having a three bird roast (from Lidl).

IamMummyhearmeROAR · 01/01/2025 12:54

I'm loving the steak pie crew! I don't eat meat but DH does so maybe next year we'll branch out and try. 😁

We're having a side of salmon pan fried, hasslebacked potatoes with dill and chive butter, asparagus, tenderstem broccoli, and a champagne sauce. It's been our go-to for about 9 years. Every year we say we'll do something different, but then it gets close and we change our minds!

We are having shin of beef, dauphinois potatoes, carrots and broccoli with sticky toffee pudding and custard.

Butcher's steak pie as per the law.

Snackpocket · 01/01/2025 13:43

Fillet steak with chips and mushrooms for my husband and jacket potato (with cheese!) and salad for me.

MaltipooMama · 01/01/2025 13:45

Nice quick and easy here - we're having a huge ribeye steak with dauphinois potatoes and Tenderstem broccoli!

LadyMargaretPoledancer · 01/01/2025 13:47

rc22 · 01/01/2025 13:49

Going to my mum's. She's doing roast beef.

Musicalmistress · 01/01/2025 13:51

Lots of lovely dinners but what did we all have for breakfast/brunch?
Tradition in this house is smoked salmon and cream cheese on bagels with lemon and pepper. Just finished and it was yum! 😋
So glad we prepped tonight's dinner yesterday so just bunged lamb in the oven - already smells amazing 🥂

dontforgetme · 01/01/2025 13:51

We always order a Chinese.

mitogoshigg · 01/01/2025 14:01

Unsure as just us, Lidl is shut apparently so either got to pay for Sainsburys or make do ... off to raid freezer!

mitogoshigg · 01/01/2025 14:05

Think Sainsbury's is required, must be more organised next year.

(I tend to shop most days)

Amazingday · 01/01/2025 14:17

Steak pie. Scottish in England. DP is English and doesn’t understand the tradition. He thinks it’s not a posh tea for New Year’s Day, but does look forward to it as I get it from the farm shop.

WhatIDoIsEnough · 01/01/2025 14:20
