I’m Scottish so it’s the law that we Have Steak pie, mashed potatoes and peas😂
The beef’s been in the slow cooker since 8am and is just about hitting the falling apart stage 🤤, and tomorrow it’ll get a puff pastry lid before going in the oven.
Thinking I may break slightly with tradition and do roast potatoes as well as mash.
When my parents were around it was always trifle for pudding, but no real fans now, so I’ve just made a Biscoff cheesecake which is LUSH.

Whats on your menu?

Lentil soup, butchers steak pie, mash & peas but I’ve also got pigs in blankets and stuffing to go with it. Then homemade cake & cheese board for later. Square sausage for breakfast also. Yes - Scottish!

Lightswitchup · 31/12/2024 19:23

Steak pie and a trifle

TwinkleLights24 · 31/12/2024 19:24

Mum and Dad are hosting me and siblings plus grandkids for roast lamb.

Another Scottish person so yes steak pie!

FeliznaviDogs · 31/12/2024 19:34

I’m wishing I’d planned steak pie! Not Scottish here - in the north east. We always have a seafood based meal on NYD - the whole thing is gutted and steam cooked in a fish kettle with fresh herbs and lemons in martini and vodka with plenty of black pepper corns. Usually do carrots mangetout and baby corn with hassle back baby taters and a homemade hollendaise sauce. I almost never split it now - it’s taken 35 years to perfect my sauce.

Dessert is usually tiramisu but this year we will be having posh champagne jelly with whipped cream and fresh fruit. Might even have coffee and a small whisky after.

The pets are having a dog and cat friendly fish pie but I’ll make them separate as I use different herbs for each as what’s toxic for a cat is different for a dog.

We will have the leftover crackers too just to end the festive season.

Thursa · 31/12/2024 19:43

This year we’re having prawn cocktail, beef stroganoff and cheesecake.

@BashfulClam @NotaRealHousewife
When I was young (early 80s) the sausages in our steak pie/stew & pastry were always for the kids, only the working men got the nice beef! We all gathered at my gran's on the 1st so there were lots of us to feed and the sausages stretched the pot a bit further - to be fair as kids we all preferred them to the 'real meat' anyway 😂😂

Therealjudgejudy · 31/12/2024 19:50

Doing meat free January so its 3 bean veggie chilli (extra hot) with sour cream and rice.

Pollydollydoodle · 31/12/2024 19:52

Scottish here - never done steak pie.

sprigatito · 31/12/2024 19:53

We're having gammon with mashed potatoes and three kinds of cabbage. And a bucket of gravy.

Scottish so normally steak pie but this year it will be fish cakes and salad. Hello Mounjaro!

hobbledyhoy · 31/12/2024 20:02

Also Scottish and would've been steak pie but with a new baby I really couldn't face the hassle, so likely left over cheese from Christmas.

Never heard of sausages in the pie before.

PieHeaded · 31/12/2024 20:10

I have Scottish parents. We live in South-West England but my DM orders steak pie to be delivered from the butchers in Scotland… every year! So we are off to her house tomorrow for that, served with potatoes and big peas that you put salt and vinegar on (not sure what these peas are called but they only have them on NYD!)

Jeezitneverends · 31/12/2024 20:10

@hobbledyhoy cheese is always a valid dinner choice! Congratulations on your new arrival

As a Scot living down south I am insanely jealous of all your steak pies (especially those with sausage!) I would usually make my own but have been struck down with a horrible virus so couldn't get out to the shops. I've defrosted some Chinese pork belly slices which I will have on top of some spicy ramen with all the veg from the fridge stir fried. I'll definitely be making a steak pie next week!

Panickingnowhelp · 31/12/2024 22:47

Love all the Steak pies, never heard of this tradition before.
We're having Roast Duck and all the trimmings, we had it last NYD too.
I hope everyone enjoys their meals.

Merrow · 01/01/2025 09:22

@PieHeaded where do you get your steak pie delivered from? I live in England, and butchers here don't understand that steak pie requires puff pastry!

BCBird · 01/01/2025 09:29

My.mom used to.do a turkey dinner- yummy. I'm with friends this year and we are giving steak and salad. Some of your meals sound delicious

Squirrelblanket · 01/01/2025 09:32

We make a massive macaroni cheese with the leftover Christmas cheese.

This butcher is local to me and amazing-if I didn’t make my own I’d get their steak pie (I get their beef). I sometimes send stuff from them to a family member in the south and it’s a great service

We’re having a full roast dinner. Roast pork, roast potatoes, fried sprouts with bacon, carrots, broccoli, peas and yorkies. I’ve got some sort of Iceland dessert in the freezer as well I think.

Probably sweet tea and cheese toasties in a flask, on our cold wet walk

You'd have some job getting them into the flask

GameOfJones · 01/01/2025 10:08

New Years Day food is always the same for us. Full English breakfast (the one day of the year I cook one at home) then a roast dinner in the evening. We always have a walk somewhere too but it's flipping windy here today.

Wide mouth food flasks-it’s amazing what you can get in them!
