Washing machine has just died. What are the brands to look at/ avoid?

Probably looking at mid range (or higher if I get lucky in the sales). Definitely don’t mind cheaper if it works!

Ideally A rating etc and 8kg + capacity.

Just wondering what brands to look into.

I had a Siemens and was going to avoid Bosch (can’t remember why), but have discovered that they make these machines in the same factory…

Interesting thoughts.

I was all for getting another Siemens - we've been in the house 4.5 years and it was in the house when we bought it, but then I read that Siemens and Bosch are in the same factory.

I have thought about repairing, but it’s new year and no one can come out yet and we normally d at leat one wash per day (family of 4 + animals and in the muddy countryside). It threw the trip switch and started showing an error code that Google says is link to the motor. Plus it’s not been running perfectly for the last year or so(occasionally not draining and noisy when spinning), so I don’t feel bad looking for a new one.

Going to filter results again regardless of brand and see what show up. Definitely want a larger capacity because I think this one has problems due to overloading (bedding and towels - not by me!!)

Want at least A energy rating.

Agree that they make them too complicated nowadays. All I want is a fast wash, a delicate wash, a hot cotton/ towels one and a normal 'mix' load. Maybe also the option to adjust temperature/ spin for each wash (which would remove the need for a delicate program)

I'm back to the Bosch, LG and Siemens… The product description appears to be exactly the same for the Bosch and the Siemens (including layout and phrasing), so I can see them being made in the same factory!

I think I need to go for the Bosch. Doesn’t make sense to pay more and it has everything I need (size and energy class).

We had Bosch washing machine and dryers fir many years. Then we had a /samsung washer. It wasn’t a cheap one either. It lasted less than a year before giving us several problems. We replaced it with another Bosch.

You get what you pay for.

Crunchymum · 29/12/2024 14:27

Hate my Bosch but despite the filter getting clogged every few months and the door hanging off, it won't bloody die!!

(The door still seals, it's just wonky when you open it!)

Had an Ecobubble before this one and hated that too.

Infact I've never had a washing machine I've loved.

AmazingGraze · 29/12/2024 14:30

Zanussi are the best in my opinion. I bought a Samsung and hate it.

CleftChin · 29/12/2024 14:33

I hate my Hoover (bought because where I was living at the time there was very little choice) - BUT, it's getting on for 10 years old, and shows no sign of flagging at all, despite moving 1000s of miles, having an on-going bug where it beeps and moves around programs if it's just sitting idle, and getting the 'filter blocked' error and having to be drained probably once every 3 months from stuff in my kids pockets....

I had an AEG before, which was fine, but I didn't ever need the steam cycle in the end

I loved my Miele (currently my sister has it, and it's still going strong at nearly 20 years old) but it was a low-capacity one that wasn't any good once I had kids.

CleftChin · 29/12/2024 14:34

My parents always buy bosch - never had any significant trouble, even when we were all at home.

FedUpandDownAgain · 29/12/2024 11:50

I’m not sure I can stretch to a Miele at this short notice and the lower end ones don’t seem to have the same functions.

I currently have an LG in my basket (11 kg, max 1400 rpm) Most expensive.
a Siemens (10 kg, max 1600 rpm)
and a Bosch series 6 (10 kg, max 1600 rpm). Cheapest (due to offer)

I have a Miele second one of my adult life. When the last one broke the engineer showed me it had done twice as many washes as they calculate for the lifetime guarantee ( 3 boys very sporty and all in cloth nappies.
Current one I use 3 wash programs only cotton's eco, mixed load eco, and hand wash. The key feature for me is the delay timer which I think is on all models.

TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks · 29/12/2024 14:40

Pretty happy with our Bosch. 6 and a half years of heavy use, going strong <tempts fate>

We've a Miele dishwasher and have been disappointed with that but don't know what their washing machines are like.

SleepingisanArt · 29/12/2024 14:55

I replaced a 20 year old Miele (which like @umberellaonesie had done a lot more loads than standard) with another this year. It did come with a 10 year warranty (like its predecessor) - it was a free extension to the standard 5 years on that model. We bought a simpler model, mid price range, as I don't want an app or a choice of 200 programmes I'll never use. The standard spin is 1400 as the EU are interfering and 1600 is being phased out apparently. I'm impressed with how quiet it is too.

ExceededUsefulEconomicLife · 29/12/2024 14:56

Avoid candy! I don't think there are any others that are of concern. We had a candy and it broke within weeks and luckily an engineer came out on the warranty, it always needed to be treated delicately and almost cheered on to work. We've had 2 hot points, one before and one after and they are rock solid. Even with all the dog hair.

martinisforeveryone · 29/12/2024 14:59

@TheLittleOldWomanWhoShrinks see my post above about my Miele washer-dryer. I also have what I termed a Friday afternoon Miele dishwasher. I had several engineers out in its first two or three years and the last one said he’d always get a Miele washing machine, but not their dishwasher. That said, I’m trying to work out how old it is and it must be 18, so it’s redeemed itself, although I wouldn’t say its performance is high end, especially on the drying side. That seems a fairly universal complaint with dishwashers though.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 29/12/2024 15:01

My mum has a Haier 7 series and loves it, I'm so taken with it I've ordered one for when our new kitchen is fitted.
We currently have a candy that was bought as a cheap temporary replacement when we moved 8 years ago..... It has been repaired once but that was because DH massively overloaded it with a super king duvet, mattress protector and full duvet cover set all at once, it was something to do with the bearings but a cheap fix.
It's knackered now but to be fair to it it was cheap and has lasted 8 years of 7-10 loads a week

Spendysis · 29/12/2024 15:03

Very happy with my Samsung eco bubble

Rainbow450 · 29/12/2024 15:05

We had an eco bubble and when it died my hubby chose a new one - he loves a bit of research 🤣. We ended up with a Haier which was not a brand id go for as it's just not well known. It's excellent, direct drive, excellent cleaning and I'd have one again.

Mine is 13 yo AEG but we are in a soft water area if that makes any difference
My mums is same age her previous one was 18 before it died.

Mine is also an AEG which is now 15 years old. My last AEG lasted 10 years and my Bendix Electrolux lasted 14 years. So on my 3rd machine since I got married.
Current machine was making unusual noises last time used so I'm thinking it may be starting to go wrong. Would like a Siemens or Miele next time. I had a Siemens dishwasher which was 19 years old when we moved house. Would have brought it with me only new kitchen had a built in Candy which had to be replaced after 7 years. We got a Bosch.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/12/2024 15:06

I’ve got an LG direct drive. It’s brilliant

FranticFrankie · 29/12/2024 15:10

Siemens- 8 years on- gets a lot of use
I’ve had Zanussi (awful) Hotpoint (not bad) and a Bendix which was brilliant. A real workhorse of a washer

WhatsitWiggle · 29/12/2024 15:30

My Bosch is 17 years old and still going strong! Parents had a Miele that made it to 25 years and was still working when they replaced with an upgraded model (not cheap though).

Bosch - but only the ones manufactured in Germany.

How do you find that out?

FedUpandDownAgain · 29/12/2024 15:34

How do you find that out?

it says in the Product specification on the John Lewis site (you don't have to actually buy from there if you see cheaper elsewhere) - many are manufactured in Turkey - might have been Which, but someone did a test and then we checked anecdotally with family and friends and all the longer lasting machine were ones manufactured in Germany and the 'disappointing' ones were Turkey

FedUpandDownAgain · 29/12/2024 17:26

The Bosch is manufactured in Spain and the Miele in Poland - so neither of the German ones are manufactured in Germany.

Newhi · 29/12/2024 17:51

Bosch are the highest rated on Which. They don’t recommend LG due to a lot of people having issues with their appliances over time.

I have a Samsung ecobubble and I’m not keen. A few of my sheets have come out with slight tears and it doesn’t always all the soap out. It’s so noisy too!!
