Washing machine has just died. What are the brands to look at/ avoid?

Probably looking at mid range (or higher if I get lucky in the sales). Definitely don’t mind cheaper if it works!

Ideally A rating etc and 8kg + capacity.

Just wondering what brands to look into.

I had a Siemens and was going to avoid Bosch (can’t remember why), but have discovered that they make these machines in the same factory…

I have a Bosch Series 4 8kg that I'm very pleased with.

Didntask · 29/12/2024 11:10

I've stuck with LG for years. I have one of their Direct Drive 10.5kg washers, love it. Especially after my son threw up over my superking quilt last night. 😒

Mumteedum · 29/12/2024 11:11

I have had an LG for going on twenty years. It's been brilliant. Mum has similar one. Though of course you hope they're making new ones as good as the old ones!

ToBeOrNotToBee · 29/12/2024 11:11

My Beko is 7 years strong

Lovelysummerdays · 29/12/2024 11:11

I had a Bosch for ages and it was great. Then it died and I be had a series of cheap machines that last 18 months, I’m going to get a good one next time with some sort of extended warranty.

purpledagger · 29/12/2024 11:12

a washing machine engineer once told my mum that in his opinion, there isn't much point in spending a lot of money on a washing machine and just save that difference to put to a new one as they aren't built to last.

I just had a well-regarded appliance repairman out to repair my elderly dishwasher before Christmas, and he recommended Miele all the way for appliances.

I've spent a fortune over the years and what I've found is that it doesn't matter to us what we spend they don't seem to last. We had a cheap beko in the apartment and it was brilliant. The one we have now is cheap but it's really noisy.

Zofloramummy · 29/12/2024 11:18

I’ve got a Samsung, it has a digital inverter so runs on magnets rather than a drive belt, and it’s really good. Large capacity and good amount of programmes. It’s mid range price and I haven’t had any trouble with it and I’ve had it 5 years.

partystress · 29/12/2024 11:20

Miele are indestructible and you can often get a 10 year guarantee.

Avoid Sharp (driers fab, washers rubbish with anything heavy) and Hotpoint (rarely get to end of one year warranty before needing repair).

unsync · 29/12/2024 11:27

I have a Samsung ecobubble. It's about ten years old and very reliable. It washes well and I am happy with it. Had Bosch before and I prefer my Samsung.

Couchpotato3 · 29/12/2024 11:32

Miele. We've had two in 30 years and second one is still going strong. Pricey initially but they do a great job and work out cheaper in the long run

UpTheMagicChristmasTree · 29/12/2024 11:35

We've stuck to Hoover since our last one lasted about 15 years. Our new one seems pretty good too, so we're hoping we might get similar, time will tell.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/12/2024 11:35

We've just got a Samsung eco bubble.Very good and plays a lively tune when the cycle has finished 😊

Bodeganights · 29/12/2024 11:41

They are just not being made to last anymore except miele. And even miele do sometimes break. And of course the cost is a factor.

Having had a washing machine break over Christmas and lockdown and waiting 3 weeks for it to be fixed my new plan is buy cheapest, replace when breaks. Unless it's still in warranty period and even then I'll think about how far into warranty it is and if it's worth waiting for it to be fixed or just go buy a new one same day and bring it home same day. Same with dryer and fridge, fridge/freezer etc. I'd love to get them fixed but I've done that too and 5 weeks later a different fault needed fixing.

zingally · 29/12/2024 11:42

I had a Beko in my old house that was 10 years old and going strong.

In my recent new house I've got a Caple. A brand I'd never heard of, but a bit of googling reveals it to be a mid-range item. Only had it a few months though, so can't vouch for it yet!

waltzingparrot · 29/12/2024 11:42

We never spend much on a washing machine because, as a pp said, they aren't build to last. We buy basic because we use the same two programmes regardless of how many it has.

There's less to go wrong on a basic machine and ours have generally lasted 8 years on average. I do use a washing machine descaler every 6 months. Our current one is a Hotpoint and is now in 8th year and still going strong. A++ rating and 9kg capacity.

Eyesopenwideawake · 29/12/2024 11:43

Another Samsung fan - mine swallows 11kg so even a king duvet fits in.

Needanewname42 · 29/12/2024 11:45

Mine is 13 yo AEG but we are in a soft water area if that makes any difference
My mums is same age her previous one was 18 before it died.

Floralnomad · 29/12/2024 11:45

I have all Bosch white goods and have had no issue with any of them .

ZiggyZowie · 29/12/2024 11:47

I've got an American top loader which is going strong still

Bought in 1992. !!!

FedUpandDownAgain · 29/12/2024 11:50

I’m not sure I can stretch to a Miele at this short notice and the lower end ones don’t seem to have the same functions.

I currently have an LG in my basket (11 kg, max 1400 rpm) Most expensive.
a Siemens (10 kg, max 1600 rpm)
and a Bosch series 6 (10 kg, max 1600 rpm). Cheapest (due to offer)

Buy a Bosch. I had one that lasted more than 20 years

ProbableDoris · 29/12/2024 11:52

I have a Siemens Extraklasse based on advice on here that they are more repairable. Had it five years now and it looks brand new but I have neither kids nor a dog so it’s only used a couple of times a week. Got mine from a local Euronics shop.

LindorDoubleChoc · 29/12/2024 11:53

Absolutely not Bosch! I've owned 5 washing machines over the years, the Bosch was easily the worst. I hated it and willed it to die, which luckily it did after 5 years.

I'm happy with my Samsung, which I've had for over five years now - it does the job. I don't know why they all have so many ridiculous programmes when most people only ever use two or three.
