Washing machine has just died. What are the brands to look at/ avoid?

Probably looking at mid range (or higher if I get lucky in the sales). Definitely don’t mind cheaper if it works!

Ideally A rating etc and 8kg + capacity.

Just wondering what brands to look into.

I had a Siemens and was going to avoid Bosch (can’t remember why), but have discovered that they make these machines in the same factory…

My Samsung 8kg is brilliant! Fast delivery and I love how it has remembered the most used program so it’s the first option when I turn the dial 👍🏼

I’m not sure I can stretch to a Miele at this short notice and the lower end ones don’t seem to have the same functions.

I currently have an LG in my basket (11 kg, max 1400 rpm) Most expensive.
a Siemens (10 kg, max 1600 rpm)
and a Bosch series 6 (10 kg, max 1600 rpm). Cheapest (due to offer)

Cheapest Miele in similar price bracket is 8kg and I can’t actually find the spin speed

We buy bosch as they have always been a very good buy and lasted well.

Miele are indestructible and you can often get a 10 year guarantee.

Avoid Sharp (driers fab, washers rubbish with anything heavy) and Hotpoint (rarely get to end of one year warranty before needing repair).

Our Hotpoint ones have lasted way longer than that. We've also had a good Beko one.

Absolutely not Bosch! I've owned 5 washing machines over the years, the Bosch was easily the worst. I hated it and willed it to die, which luckily it did after 5 years.

I'm happy with my Samsung, which I've had for over five years now - it does the job. I don't know why they all have so many ridiculous programmes when most people only ever use two or three.

Argh - I was starting to think the Bosch!

I have a Bosch and it’s fab it’s on a lot due to my sons sen and bed wetting, 10kg and had it years and no issues read reviews online majority on here are positive. We had a Samsung previously and it was awful had the repair man out several times.

Flubadubba · 29/12/2024 12:07

Another Samsung fan- no issues for 7 years! Constantly use the extra window to put stuff in that we have forgotten! Only quirk is that the timer is set to when it needs to finish, not start.

bloodredfeaturewall · 29/12/2024 12:08

our miele died after 8 years. electronic panel - not repairable.
now have a bosch series 6, 9kg. so far so good...

I love that about it too

I'm very happy with my John Lewis brand machine

muddyford · 29/12/2024 12:12

My Zanussi died this morning. Thinking of a Hoover as the tumble dryer has been excellent.

burnoutbabe · 29/12/2024 12:14

I sm after a washer dryer (so bit different) so went to local library to browse which onlibe.

Pretty much most of them score around 69-70 whether £350 or £750.

Apart from the £1000 Miele which gets 78.

Our current one has lasted 14 years (£400 indesit). But we are 2 adults so our usage is probably way under the typical family. So I will go for whatever is £400 with high as score as possible (or is marked down for downsides we don't are about -no need for a fast wash or mind about noise in use.

Starryspam · 29/12/2024 12:16

very happy with my Samsung Ecobubble. Had it 5 years so far.

cashmerecardigans · 29/12/2024 12:17

Miele all the way here. They have an outlet site where you can usually get models at around a third off

Mumofacertainage · 29/12/2024 12:19

My. Miele 20 years old and going strong, will be expensive to replace though

mitogoshigg · 29/12/2024 12:19

Just get a cheaper beko. None are made to last these days so save your money for the next one!

I opted for a+ 9kg as it makes sense (was only £30 more expensive than the smaller capacity) but fancy programmes really are unnecessary. If you have variable electric prices or solar panels then a timer might be useful but as we don't that wasn't only radar.

1apenny2apenny · 29/12/2024 12:21

Miele now only give basic warranty, 1-2 years - used to be 10, that tells you all you need to know about the quality compared to others. Also see a few threads recently where their customer service has been poor,

I bought a Bosch about 6 months ago, it came with 5 year guarantee, it's fine. I think LG and Samsung also very good. Costco often have very good deals if you are a member or could join?

mitogoshigg · 29/12/2024 12:22

Mine is 4 years old, no trouble so far, I consider 5 years old as excellent these days, anything extra is a bonus

shockeditellyou · 29/12/2024 12:22

You could buy a budget Beko and replace it every 2 years and still spend less than one Miele over 10 years. Cheap and cheerful every time.

ImWearingPantaloons · 29/12/2024 12:24

Miele if you can stretch to it, otherwise Bosch.

I've had some Beko ones in the past which were good for the money, but no where near as indestructible as my Bosch.

JC03745 · 29/12/2024 12:26

I had a bosch for years in a previous house and no problems.
Now have a Miele, but only been in 1yr, so early days. Miele offer 20% new appliances if you have a bluelight card, but you need to ring and speak to customer services. Otherwise, they have an outlet and the stock changes daily. We bought some A and B grade products and they were like new- but much cheaper.

I've had my Siemens for nearly 20 years and it's still going strong despite living in a very hard water area (I always use descaler though). It started leaking recently (turned out to be a problem with the pipes behind it rather than the washing machine) and the engineer said it was a really well made machine and much better quality than modern day machines. His advice was to repair it when necessary rather than buy a new one as the quality of new machines these days is terrible. Not very encouraging I'm afraid. :-(

I think the old Miele were basically bullet proof, but I don't there ones are the same.

mine is LG DIRECT drive and it's been the BEST. They don't make them Inbuilt though and in my new kitchen I really want an inbuilt. Until it dies I'd just leave the cabinet door off. But don't really want to do that long term.

BetweenADockAndAHardDrive · 29/12/2024 12:29

We had a Bosch for 14 years that was used daily (4DC, so at least one load per day). When it finally died two years ago, we replaced with another. Will do the same when this one goes (although hopefully by then we'll be past doing at least one load per day!).

Dbank · 29/12/2024 12:30

I've had good experience with Miele appliances, (currently 5, one over 20 years) they are usually more expensive but are built better, i.e. Metal counterweights, enamel panels, brushless motors etc.

The only issue I've had, was with a washing machine that had a problem with the automatic dosing after 4 years of a 5 year warrantee. (purchase cost £1,400)

The Miele engineer was very apologetic and said there was a defect with some of the early machines, he could fix it, or would I like a new machine (list £2,300) free of charge with a new 5 year warrantee? A new machine was delivered within 48 hours.

I also know of someone who had a new brand new dishwasher leak and Miele covered the 8K cost to replace their two week old parquet flooring. I don't think many brands would do that.
