I know it’s a topic that has been done before.

Film?! Have you ever heard A SONG
Danny Kaye and The Andrews Sisters—Civilization (Bongo, Bongo, Bongo).

I first heard this absolute "gem" a few years ago in a restaurant in Sicily, sung in Italian, of all things. No movie, no screenplay, no drama could ever compete with this… song. And the lyrics? Brace yourself. Truly, prepare for the worst of the worst.

It has however been made into a Broadway musical where the Jack Lemmon role is played by a non-binary actor (who won a Tony award for it) and the character now comes to the conclusion he's trans/genderfluid and needs to live as his authentic self!

so a great comedy now has to be a champion on identity

its coming to the West End, shall give this a miss

Yes, I first heard this in one of the Fallout video games. Reminds me of that UKIP MEP who referred to foreign countries as “Bongo Bongo Land”. Every single part of this song is so hideously racist and patronising.

It’s a shame, because a) the song has an incredibly fun and catchy tune and b) in some ways, the basic concept isn’t awful (not everyone wants to live the “Western” way) but the way it is put across is unbelievably vile and mocking.

I now have this as ear worm 😠

I think that's a classic case of good intentions but...

@MaloryJingleJones I'm genuinely interested in what you think the problem is with Mississipi Burning. It was made in a time far closer to the Civil Rights movement than we are now, is based on real (terrible) events and portrays racial injustice and the Ku Klux Klan as the evil things they are.

Anything pre 2000 lol because there is bound to be something in every film that will upset someone

And what is it that you imagine happened in 2000 to abruptly change the Overton Window in film?

For a start, isn't there a significant age difference between the characters played by the two leads?

I've just done a search. Not a big age gap, but "Baby" is apparently only 17.

There was a thread on this a few months back and it was interesting. While Baby was younger and certainly not street wise, she had the advantage of class and money. In terms of power play, it was level or arguably Johnny was the more vulnerable one.

OonaStubbs · 31/12/2024 19:23

Given the decline of the cinema, maybe they should be making more of these films now.

Watching what?

Sorry, I was responding to someone’s suggestion of Love Actually.

HelenWheels · 31/12/2024 19:59

i caught the beginning of Flash Dance, the thighs right at the front of the picture, gyrating, then she drunk a huge amount of coke!
that wouldnt happen now

Wish you were here is a brilliant film for the psychiatrist scene alone. (With the psychiatrist smoking throughout the consultation.)
"You must know a dirty, filthy, smutty word beginning with F. Everybody does, I most certainly do."
"Why are you asking me?"
"Because I want to hear you say it."
"You dirty old bugger!"

I think there's a point being missed with lots of these replies. With the people doing terrible things, are they being shown sympathetically? Take Harry Potter, and the Dursleys neglecting Harry. The sympathy is for Harry; if it had been for the Dursleys, that would be quite another matter.

There's a moment in Grange Hill in the 1980 series, which shows what the general attitude was at the time with casual violence by parents.
Teacher (to Duane with a black eye): Who gave you that?
Duane: Me dad, sir.
Teacher: Why?
Duane: I had me bike nicked, sir.
Teacher: (shrugs) Off you go.

No way would it be shown like that nowadays.

Firstly, "prostitute" is derogatory to all sex workers. Do you call all car sales people shysters because some are? Many sex workers treat what they do as any other person treats the job they do, it's how they make a living. They choose what they are comfortable doing. The world of pimps, drugs, and coercion exists but many professions have a criminal element but we don't slander them. People who use sex workers usually for do because it is the only avenue for what they want. It is usually sexual and if it is not hurting anyone then what is the problem. Married people are not the only people allowed to have sex and if you don't have a partner there are options that may suit you. You may be someone that does not want a long term relationship. My memory of the of the movie is that he was single and he needed to look as though he had a fiancee to help a business deal. She was employed as an escort by choice for whatever reason. What is the problem? No one is being conned or hurt.

I really don’t know where to start with this. Sex worker sanitises things. Prostitute tells it like it is. And for you to say that those using these services aren’t hurting anyone is so naive I can’t believe I’m actually reading it. Do you know about people trafficking, young girls forced into prostitution, hooked on drugs so they’re compliant ? Then there is the inequality in the law. There is a law against selling sex, but there is none against purchasing it. Why do you think that is ? The only way a man can be prosecuted in the UK for engaging with a prostitute is if it can be proved she has been trafficked. Please, please employ a bit of critical thinking.

It is not aimed at adults

Well Duh !! Just because it’s aimed at children doesn’t mean it has to be mindless shite.

OonaStubbs · 01/01/2025 00:06

What about "soul man" where a white man turns himself black to get into college?

AnnunciataM · 01/01/2025 11:46

I'm not sure Austin Powers would be made these days - "that ain't no woman, it's A MAN, man" wouldn't go down well in certain circles!

I said that there is an undesirable side to sex work and stamping it out should be pursued as vigorously as any other crime. Again, do we rail against money laundering in casinos even though it involves extortion, tax evasion, coercion, and violence and say they should be shut down? Do we use demeaning terms to describe the people who work at casinos. No we don't. If I had a sister who was of legal age and made an informed and free decision that sex work was for her and had a long term plan in mind just as you would in other careers it then I would support her. Of course I would worry about her being harmed but again many other jobs entail serious risk. I would not think any less of her. An ex work colleague of mine who has better university qualifications than me and was smarter than me was passed over for most positions she applied for and was making no headway with her education debt or saving for a dwelling. She took up escort work 4 years ago and has cleared the education debt and has a very nice apartment plus an investment property. She works 20 hours a week now on average. She will go into something else in a few years time all before 35. She has a long term partner who knows what she does.

If she's happy being a commodity then that's her prerogative.

I would be devastated if a member of my family thought it was a good idea

There is no law against selling sex in the UK. There is a law against two or three women working together. That applies in Nordic model countries too. In Nordic model Ireland the penalty for 'brothel-keeping' was doubled.

You have stated a lot of myths about prostitution. I am reading Going Down to the Sea by Ko-lin Chin. He interviewed Chinese prostitutes working abroad. He wrote that only one of them was deceived, coerced or forced. None of them had any contact with organised crime except in Singapore. This fits in with other research about prostitution and trafficking.

maltravers · 01/01/2025 15:26

I think we’re all well aware that men who have watched too much porn seem to want sex that is violent and degrades women. If they’re expecting it in relationships as reported, one can only imagine what they demand from someone whose body they have bought. Selling sex degrades both parties, sorry if that doesn’t accord with your politics.

@Nanny0gg
Mike Batt has not been mentioned? I wager you didn’t know this.
Garfunkel was not a songwriter, but a singer,
Paul McCartney would have embraced both disciplines - however
how and why is airing information, such a thorn to you, why would you come
on here to be so rude, bullish even, to admonish a well meaning poster -
@Nanny0gg why have you stooped to such a mean spirited message??

Nothing redeems meanness

The third one certainly wouldn't. I was surprised enough that it got made when it did. I know Austin Powers was never meant to be PC/woke, but that level of overt racism, body shaming and herp-derp sexual harassment seemed weird even for 2003.
