I know it’s a topic that has been done before.
but what film do you think would not be made now and why?
mine is, every which way but loose.
yep the Clint Eastwood film with the orangutan

Honestly, just because something is depicted on screen or stage, or in a book, it does not imply approval by the creator. Often very much the opposite — it is inviting us to question our own responses, values, and beliefs — and perhaps to change them.

Racism, sexism, violence, paedophilia, abuses of power, etc. are all still going on. Wokeness hasn’t obliterated them. But it can help us to identify them and respond appropriately when we see them in real life, including understanding who the real enemies are.

The things I really hate are the Downton Abbey style historical rewrites where the upper classes are all so very nice and liberal and treat their servants so well.

But the only films I think really wouldn’t be made today are (as a PP mentioned) the old-style ‘cowboys and Indians’ westerns and unthinking blacking-up. Tropic Thunder, as I recall, was a satire which questioned blacking up and portraying people with disabilities on screen.

Pretty Woman was awful, with the exception of the wish-fulfilment shopping scene. I’m sure many, many people saw it for what it was at the time. But Julia Roberts was luminous in it — much as Nicole Kidman was when she portrayed a prostitute in Moulin Rouge. It’s all very complicated.

Great post. I agree with this.

The way this thread is going it reminds me of the mother of an ex-boyfriend of mine who said Dr. Zhivago was a horrible film because of the adultery.

The very same, I think of that sketch whenever anyone mentions The Singing Ringing Tree! 😄

I think of 'the singing and ringing and plinkingen and plonkingen tree'

Then there is this

@ClaireEclair It doesn't matter if that was / is his accent it is wrong for the role.

Imagine if the artful dodger was played speaking broad Yorkshire.

Another Clint Eastwood film 'The Bridges of Madison County' would also not be made today. It's a beautiful film. However, the age gap is cringe, he goes after a woman he knows is married and despite having a good relationship with her husband she cheats on him. She even falls in love with the other man and contemplates leaving him.

The story-line is fucked up and these characters aren't redeemable. But I was totally on their side the first time I watched it. Years later, when I thought about it, I feel cleverly manipulated into excusing behaviors that do not align with my own values.

Edited

So exactly like half the thread in relationships then!

Not seen Bend it like Beckham mentioned yet - seems amazing that the coach shagging the players was acceptable 20 years ago (or maybe it's just realistic).

The wheelers. And Mombi with her different heads.

Loved it.

Grew up reading Dahl so this stuff is my cup of tea.

Those heads gave me nightmares for years!

Any film in which the British won

I’ve always been frightened of toddlers.

Whats wrong with Bambi?

I'm guessing it's because Bambi's mother is shot by hunters and today's children have to be protected from that kind of thing. It's meant to be sad, everyone who saw it cried and survived and seemed to grow up unscathed but knowing bad things happen. Ditto Ring of Bright Water.

One thing that has always been acceptable since the dawn of Hollywood has been the hero, the good guy representing USA who is at odds against the bad guys, usually from another country or non mainstream culture. A subtle type of propaganda asserting USA's self perceived superiority. Anything non USA is perceived as backward or morally wrong or comical. Non USA characters are usually portrayed using poor stereotypes often bordering on racist. There is no chance of this stuff being amended or cancelled because those that are doing the cancelling are the same people who promote this stuff in the first place, cancelling or rewriting is just another form of propaganda to try to assert USAs moral superiority. This to me is more damaging that the content that is cancelled.

The plot of the film is about grooming but it went completely over my head when I watched it as a child. Gigi is a young teenager being trained by her grandmother to be a courtesan to an older eligible bachelor Gaston. The song "thank heaven for little girls" is sung by Gastons uncle - who Gigi's grandmother used to be the courtesan of. It was kept very subtle to get past the censors. But the plot and that song are definitely creepy.

This just reminded me of 'My father the hero' as I think that song also featured in it. It absolutely would not be made today! The plot as I recall is a teenage girl on holiday with her Dad and for some reason tells people he is her lover. The comedy revolves around everyone thinking he is a perv.

All the President's Men about the downfall and disgrace of Nixon.

These days you couldn't be sure by the time the film came out that he wouldn't be back in the White House!*

*Assuming he hadn't met his two-term limit of course....

What kind of accent does he have?

CaptainMyCaptain · 30/12/2024 11:18

If the Artful Dodger had a Yorkshire accent I'd assume he had made his way to London to make his fortune as many others had done. Orphans from London were taken to work in the mills in Derbyshire as apprentices (aka slave labour) and let loose once they were old enough to require adult wages so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that there was traffic in either direction.

I watched it in about 1959 when I was 5

I howled like a baby when Bambi's mother was killed

I've recovered

I watched Ring of Bright Water as a kid and I don’t think I’ve often been so completely broken as I was by the end of that film! Can still remember absolutely howling through the credits.

Piggywaspushed · 30/12/2024 13:10

Children's films still do grief and loss though. I give you Paddington (death of uncle ) , Up (death of beloved wife), Lion King (death of father).

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/12/2024 13:11

I was too young to understand Bambi's mother had been killed when I saw it. I was just pissed off that humanity in general was known as Man.

FuckItItsFine · 30/12/2024 13:18

For some reason my gran was obsessed with buying me videos of emotional films about animals - Ring of Bright water, Born Free and Greyfriar’s Bobby were all favourites. I cried a lot at films as a child!

Why do you keep going on and on so aggressively? It's a discussion thread, discuss not judgy judgy

NonPlayerCharacter · 30/12/2024 14:30

The earlier James Bond films wouldn't be made now. A lot of woman slapping. I sometimes wonder if they were the reason why my father thought slapping women was the way to make them see his point of view and lost his extremely small mind when it never worked.
