I haven’t seen anyone mention the Drew Barrymore film ‘Never Been Kissed’ an adult journalist goes into a high school posing as a teenager and falls in love with her teacher.

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 29/12/2024 09:23

Never Been Kissed might have to be rethought when it comes to her brother and the girlfriend

Re Rain Man - there is a trailer on tv for something called Patience that makes me cringe every time I see it. A character says 'has autism' - when did you last meet anyone in the workplace using 'autism' as a term?

Autism isn’t a term?

@TiredEyesToday what's so awful about the Temple of Doom? 😯 I love that film.

godmum56 · 29/12/2024 09:30

Gigi.

icebearforpresident · 29/12/2024 09:31

Seriously, why is The Wedding Singer not being made anymore? I watched it 2 days ago and there’s nothing in it that’s problematic.

I don’t see how American Pie could be made now but I will still sit down and watch it anytime it’s on and laugh my way through it all.

Exactly my 12 yo has recently got into all the Indiana Jones films. At no point have I felt the need to call out anything.
Except the abhorrent treatment of the aliens in Crystal Skull - that’s Speciest.

I don’t see the problem with Hairspray, personally. The language is reflective of the period it was set in. Love the 2007 version, still contains those lines and language.

I agree and felt it was actually a good teaching moment for dd to show her that although racism still exists things have come a long way. She was completely shocked by the segregation. I love hairspray and dare I say it, for once actually felt the remake was better 😬

chipsewfast · 29/12/2024 09:32

Any Carry On film. And any Confessions of film. I'm glad they're still available and in the case of Carry On still shown regularly if only as a lesson of what not to do from history

Do people not realise there are films that might be uncomfortable to watch because they tackle difficult themes or overlay with humour as a device, however that doesn’t necessarily mean they wouldn’t or shouldn’t get made today. People seem to be struggling with this concept on this thread.

Forest gump

Why not?

Jollyhockeystickss · 29/12/2024 09:35

Weirdly i was watching sleeping with the enemy lastnight with julia roberts, one of my fave films but again the premise being she needs another man to rescue her,

I agree, it also helps build empathy for people living with a legacy that includes segregation in their lifetime. Movies covering difficult issues are so important.

I’m not sure The Crying Game would be made now. Can’t say why without spoiling the plot twist.

A brilliant film.

I've never seen it but surely that happened because he was actually an adult so the relationship would not be inappropriate but just looked it. Unless she fell in love (aka had sex) with him believing him to be a student?

Rita, Sue and Bob Too was mentioned in the third post and several thereafter. I don't know why so many posters are missing the point about that film.

I'm very sure it is. I'm retired as a teacher but I was with a family yesterday who described their own children as having autism.

hellosally · 29/12/2024 09:40

not sure about sex and the city-thinking more about the series than the films,it seemed so modern at the time but Big really was toxic. and the characters a bit one dimensional-they never mentioned their families.

Jennyathemall · 29/12/2024 09:44

Bambi
The Snowman
Harry Potter

They are not in the workplace and not on a trailer showing an inappropriate announcement every advert break.

Mrs Doubtfire. No studio would take on that script in 2024.

I haven’t seen Never Been Kissed in years but actually I don’t think there’s much of an issue with it. Drew Barrymore is the journalist and falls in love with her male teacher who is a similar age. The truth all comes out before they have their big kiss at the end. Yes, it could be seen as a bit iffy but the teacher isn’t pursuing her and, if I am remembering it correctly, she is quite conflicted about her feelings.
