I know it’s a topic that has been done before.
but what film do you think would not be made now and why?
mine is, every which way but loose.
yep the Clint Eastwood film with the orangutan

Indiana Jones and the temple of doom

hadn’t seen it before
started watching it with ds over Christmas
turned it off after half an hour. I hadn’t been able to go more than a few mins at once, without explaining why something said in the film was “not okay”.

eh?

Why would this not be made now?

In my view, because not enough people would get the jokes.

As for the Loretta scene......

Watership Down is terrifying - a cheesy Paul McCartney song did not make it less so.

do you mean bright eyes? that was art garfunkle.

Please can people mention why they think their choices wouldn’t be made now? Because some of these really have me baffled! Wish you were here for example, do people think we weren’t shocked by it when it came out? It’s a fantastic movie, believe me no-one thought the Emily Lloyd character was a model citizen! Same with Rita Sue and Bob too. And trainspotting was supposed to be seedy and shocking, why would it be banned? Am I missing something?

Trainspotting I doubt would have the under age sex scene with the underage girl threatening to blackmail the older man if the relationship ends.

I can remember how controversial 'Life of Brian' was when it first came out. My brother wanted to go tot he cinema to watch it and had many heated arguments with my mother because she wouldn't let him go.

It was banned in Norway as well as a couple of other places, including UK councils, Sweden actually used the banning as a marketing ploy, "So funny they banned it in Norway".

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 29/12/2024 08:49

I think it would’ve been made, but it wouldn’t have been made in a jokey comedic way. I think it would’ve been made for us to see him as being a right dodgy pervert taking advantage of them two girls.

I'm not sure it was ever possible to watch Rita, Sue and Bob Too without realising that.

It was from the girls' point of view and they didn't see themselves as victims. They were having a laugh. Later on in life they might have seen the seriousness of it.

I think it's very important to distinguish between films that were always intended to be shocking and jarring to your sensibilities, and those which were seen as completely normal, acceptable and not at all comment-worthy when they were made.

I've thought of another one: Clockwise. It was only ever meant to be a silly farce, but there are still some parts of it that haven't aged well - especially some of the mature situations and circumstances that sixth-former Laura was subjected to.

Yes very telling the responses on here. People unable to separate what’s inappropriate in today’s society with what’s a difficult or triggering watch. I think that in itself says a lot about people today - or at least the MN crowd - and it’s not all good.

Why would this not be made now?

Because people wouldn't understand what it is about.

Jellycatspyjamas · 29/12/2024 08:56

Why not, underage sex was problematic at the time Trainspotting was made and the movie presented it as part of a wider lifestyle which was pretty chaotic. For me it falls under the “uncomfortable to watch” banner but it was part of the wider story.

BalloonSlayer · 29/12/2024 08:57

What about Some Like It Hot.

Two men dress as women and infiltrate a women only space for their own agenda. Most of the laughs come from how unconvincing they look and their acting out of ridiculously stereotypical female behaviour and mannerisms. One of them uses their female cover to groom a woman, the other ends up pursued by a man to much hilarity.

I wonder what would happen if it was pitched now?

yes it was always that. I imagine the bit IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle doesn’t like is that the girls are responsible to some degree for their decisions also, whereas she would prefer a cleaner - he’s a pervert it’s all on him - scenario.

people these days aren’t comfortable with the greys of reality, they like everything to be simple black and white, right and wrong.

Yes, she was in a relationship with one of the teachers, and then involved in seducing a motorist so they could steal his clothes - a bit much for a girl of that age 😃Another really funny film, though. I laugh out loud every time when the arm falls off John Cleese's jacket.

It's a brilliant film though and the man who pursues one of them doesn't find it a problem when he finds out. That was pretty daring at the time - 'Nobody's perfect'.

I saw it on TV. I was a teacher and we discussed it in the staffroom as the reality for a lot of girls. They were totally disengaged with school and didn't see much of a future for themselves so no wonder they never did any homework. I didn't watch the whole film, to be honest, because it was too disturbing. Grim reality though.

Sorry, I meant to quote @YesExactlyYes

For me, it normalised what a creepy dad tried to do to my friend and I when he ran us home from babysitting…

Her journey was longer with him, and her home life was crap. DV and alcohol were prevalent.

Longma · 29/12/2024 09:04

Whilst certain aspects of some (many?) older films are on thin ice, the level of violence - including sexual violence towards women - portrayed in modern films, even those with a 15 rating, is getting worse and worse.

It seems that these days films, and many TV series, cannot be made without having such a high level of violence at its core.

I don't know why you've said I didn't like it. You are referring to the wrong poster.

Anything with Jim Carey in, they haven’t aged well.

What surprises me about Pretty Woman is that I know several people who say it's their favourite "watch together" family film.

I can't imagine sitting there with my nannas, watching Richard Gere getting noshed off for cash in his penthouse suite armchair...

You don't actually see it happening though. It's hinted at.
Unlike many modern films, where we would often now have it showed in full colour, closeup.

That’s how everybody saw him isn’t it? It doesn’t need to be serious for that to come across!

I'm still none the wiser to why The Wedding Singer wouldn't be remade?

Weird Science. Even hearing grown men talk about it now is super, super creepy.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. It’s such an enjoyable spectacle to watch but any kind of critical thinking renders it very problematic indeed.

Ruined for me yesterday by the discovery that loud noises do not trigger avalanches.

American beauty - a dad trying to sleep with his daughters friend, gross

I think that was the whole point at the time it came out tbf. It certainly isn’t presented as a romance, more a super toxic mid life crisis that doesn’t end well for him.
