Dirty Dancing

I've always hated the movie, but a 25yr old man and a 17yr teenager is wrong on so many levels

Babaganoush2013 · 29/12/2024 09:51

Someone earlier mentioned 'Shallow Hal' - can I ask why? What's so bad that it wouldn't be made nowadays?

Life of Brian would be banned as too offensive

Life of Brian was very controversial when it came out.

@Stepfordian I watched never been kissed recently with my very Gen Z DD and watching her reactions was funny and interesting.

We’ve been going through 90s/00s rom coms and she’s perpetually baffled.

Beekeepingmum · 29/12/2024 09:54

Home Alone. The whole premise wouldn't work in todays world of airport security etc etc.

Oh, that's been pointed out already. That'll teach me to comment without reading the full thread.

Shallow hal only likes slim girls but unknowingly falls in love with a larger girl, much to her shock and surprise

Possibly people might say it was 'fat shaming'?

I see nothing wrong with it by today's standards - the title is Shallow Hal and the point being made is that he judges everyone by shallow criteria; i.e conventional ideals of weight and appearance. People with high moral worth are translated into his shallow version of high worth, by being made slim and conventionally attractive. At the end, he learns his lesson and happily embraces a relationship with Rosemary as she really is.

Eh?

Colleagues in the trailer appear to just announce this to a member of the public. That would break every dignity at work policy for at least the last decade in most places

The news Harry Potter is currently at the casting stages….so filming will start again

I don't think Withnail and I would be made now. The fears of 'I' would seem unrealistic in a modern day setting.

I haven’t seen Never Been Kissed in years but actually I don’t think there’s much of an issue with it. Drew Barrymore is the journalist and falls in love with her male teacher who is a similar age. The truth all comes out before they have their big kiss at the end. Yes, it could be seen as a bit iffy but the teacher isn’t pursuing her and, if I am remembering it correctly, she is quite conflicted about her feelings.

So not really a problem then just a bit of suspense/jeopardy because everyone knows the secret.

A lot of musicals, including Miss Saigon aka American saviour complex set to music.

I rather think the point of Miss Saigon is to highlight the "American savior complex" and the harm resulting from it.
"So I wanted to save her, protect her / Christ I am an American! How can I fail to do good? / All I made was a mess, just like everyone else / In a world full of mystery that I never once understood".

i loved dirty dancing and still like it.

I have never watched my left foot and never will. the very idea of an able bodied man playing someone with CP leaves me cold.

I know it's been said already, but I really do think people are confusing films that wouldn't be made today due to dubious ideas (pretty woman is the perfect example) with films that are upsetting.

Lolita is disturbing; the entire book is, but you're meant to see that. Nabokov was not encouraging paedophilia.
Clockwork orange needs to be remade with the book's ending. There are 21 chapters for a reason.
Bambi could be gorgeous.Proper focus on the nature.I read the book as a kid, and another one of his about hares. My dc were unmoved by the death of Bambi's mother in the film.

I'm another one who watched some Pretty Woman last night and as a child/ young teen. I remember the women in the family loving the romance of it all. But ultimately, he goes and buys a woman. Nor just any woman though, Julia Roberts, who, I never never realised as a kid, is utterly beautiful. If, as someone upthread noted, he just wanted her off the streets, why not do that? Why not use his money to support a number of prostitutes? It's a bit like Creepy Gerald in AIC when he saves Daisy Renton from av life of prostitution because she's not like the 'hard eyed dough faced women' (but then makes her his mistress).

The History Boys (largely sympathetic portrayal of a predatory teacher)
Lost In Translation (significant age gap between the hero and heroine would not be to modern tastes, even though they don't actually have sex)

I can assure you that the lighthearted treatment Hector groping the boys on his moped was noted in reviews of the first production of the play in 2004, let alone the film! Lost in Translation isn’t about a sexual relationship — and the age gap is the point! He’s sick of himself, unhappily married and having a midlife crisis, she’s just out of university, unhappily married and trying to figure out what to do with her life. The thing that deforms that film for me is the lazy stereotyping of Japanese people.

American Pie
Superbad
Harold and Kumar

Lolita
Gone with the wind
Holiday Inn
Breakfast at Tiffanys

I love holiday inn as a child and often wondered why it wasn't on TV any more. My husband found it on Dvd for me and we watched along reminiscing happily before arriving at Lincoln's birthday and it suddenly made sense...

If you think the song is about grooming l suggest you watch the movie with an open mind, so that you can add context and appreciate what the lyrics are actually about. It’s a father talking to his daughter, telling her she will one day grow up to be a woman and how he must accept and welcome the change despite his fears for her. He’s accepting and coming to terms with the inevitable change that’s coming. Nothing to do with grooming, and it’s very sad that classic lyrics written over 60 years ago can be twisted in this way to suit a completely different narrative. What happened to watching films and listening to musical content for entertainment value instad of picking them apart so they can be cancelled ?

Edited

The plot of the film is about grooming but it went completely over my head when I watched it as a child. Gigi is a young teenager being trained by her grandmother to be a courtesan to an older eligible bachelor Gaston. The song "thank heaven for little girls" is sung by Gastons uncle - who Gigi's grandmother used to be the courtesan of. It was kept very subtle to get past the censors. But the plot and that song are definitely creepy.

I like my female co-stars to do more than scream ineffectively whilst the protagonist fights the enemy goons.

Well sure, but that’s not answering the question. The Indiana Jones films would still be made now, albeit with a couple of tweaks. Your preferences don’t indicate whether a film is offensive enough not to be made.

Anything with Jim Carey in, they haven’t aged well.

Also, can you imagine a remake of The Truman Show - with cameras everywhere, watching us all the time, and the mundanities of dull ordinary life being broadcast on TV as entertainment?

As the young people would respond nowadays, "Bruh!"

Normally I would agree, but the class act that is Day-Lewis is probably the only able bodied actor in the world who could do it and it be acceptable. Very compassionate man with great integrity.

He also got Arthur Miller (his father in law) to eventually see his own son who has down syndrome having completely shunned him for years.
