Films that would not be made now

I know it’s a topic that has been done before.
but what film do you think would not be made now and why?
mine is, every which way but loose.
yep the Clint Eastwood film with the orangutan

I think it would’ve been made, but it wouldn’t have been made in a jokey comedic way. I think it would’ve been made for us to see him as being a right dodgy pervert taking advantage of them two girls.

I agree, but I think the comedy is important because humour is often used in real life to get us through really difficult situations. It’s important to be able to see through the comedy to what’s really going on - in movies and in life itself. To recognise that someone laughing about their situation doesn’t mean they’re not also harmed by it.

A gritty version of Rita, Sue and Bob Too would be a completely different movie - it would obviously still have worth but the comedy in this type of movie is valid, see also East is East.

What about The Rock, Renes Riveria or Jason Momoa?
You sound like you have a weird agenda!

Meanwhile, on the internet, far worse content is being churned out for the modern viewer.

What about that movie with the woman who was actually mentally a baby and was raped repeatedly that was made recently?

I think disgusting films are still made now but differently disgusting. Still mostly from a male perspective, things haven't changed all that much

There are still token females in kids shows just maybe more than 1 this time

Simple Jack

Simple Jack doesn’t exist. It was a trailer in a movie which was making fun of those kinds of films.

Pretty Woman. I love it because I'm the right age for when it came out, but the actual story is awful. We're meant to be happy she ends up with the guy who thought it was ok to pay for a prostitute for a week.

Oh god, I hate this film.

FizzyBisto · 29/12/2024 08:20

I think it's very important to distinguish between films that were always intended to be shocking and jarring to your sensibilities, and those which were seen as completely normal, acceptable and not at all comment-worthy when they were made.

I've thought of another one: Clockwise. It was only ever meant to be a silly farce, but there are still some parts of it that haven't aged well - especially some of the mature situations and circumstances that sixth-former Laura was subjected to.

Grease (girl changes to get the guy, various sexism and bullying, song lyrics like 'Did she put up a fight?')

Breakfast at Tiffany's (Mickey Rooney - enough said)

Danny wanted Sandy as she was. She didn’t need to change to get him. He changed more to get her! Anyway, they’d known eachother for the entire school year. Not many teens would have waited a year before doing the deed!

Mississippi Burning

Brilliant film. The subject matter is history and the attempts of some to change it

I found The Misfits very disturbing. Marilyn Monroe’s character seems infantile. And when Clark Gable wakes her up by rubbing her arm and kissing her, after she said she wasn’t interested in him that way. Ick.

I will try to watch the film all the way through, but I have seen less discomforting depictions of women in far far older films.

It’s a horrible film. I hated it. I don’t recommend you watch the rest of it. The scenes with the horses are very upsetting.

BigAnne · 29/12/2024 08:22

Straw Dogs. It inferred Susan George's character enjoyed being raped.

IWasWonderin · 29/12/2024 08:24

I found the first part of The Misfits disturbing because it looks like 34-year-old woman who talks like she has the mental capacity of a child being pursued by a 60-year-old man who loves that she’s so infantile. I’m sure many people won’t spot that because until recently the kooky pixie dream girl figure was standard on TV shows (i.e. beautiful female character with a childlike voice and childlike ways).

I still can't get over the relatively-recent Smurfs Movie, where all the characters have their own nuances and personalities - but the 'quirk' about solitary Smurfette is that she happens to be female.

SaySomethingMan · 28/12/2024 23:43

I don’t see the problem with Hairspray, personally. The language is reflective of the period it was set in. Love the 2007 version, still contains those lines and language.

It’s about racism and segregation. It would definitely be made today.

NewspaperTaxis · 29/12/2024 08:26

The Carry On films could be made in theory - I mean, they're not too far off the likes of Benidorm or those Inbetweener Movies. Or the Blackadder series which are like the historical Carry Ons albeit sex wasn't featured really. Plebs.

That is a problem with making movies today, the issue of sexual politics is very fluid and back and forth so the film may well have dated badly by the time it hits the screen and elsewhere. The current Bond films do fit that bill, once the joke has stopped, it's hard to pick up again. So there's this guy in his late 30s who is not married, murders people in the course of his duties and sleeps around, has no mates to speak of? It's a hard sell.

You’re spot on there. Female character’s entire personality being female occurs in so many films that the makers of Smurfs Movie probably didn’t even notice it.

That's awful. Maybe they should have just replaced her with a male that likes dressing in dresses... inclusive, right?

Not really, it’s a theme in many of the spy type franchises. Mission Impossible, Bourne etc. Less overt sex, but that has pulled back a fair bit in Daniel Craig’s depiction of Bond too.

Shawshank Redemption - gay rape scenes in prison

Wolf of Wall Street - all the women are basically trophy wives

Transformers - basically a parade of hot, sweaty women

Most old Disney movies: as long as you're pretty, you're set.

Fast and the Furious (franchise) - where did all the women's clothes go?!

Indecent Proposal

The Truman Show - a woman PAID to be his wife, have sex, etc live on TV
....sooo many implications in this movie.

I think you're missing the point here. The remit surely is what type of thing is unacceptable because of changing attitudes but was acceptable when made obvious examples- The Black and White Minstrels and Gone With the Wind.

It's not "things which happened and still happen, but are uncomfortable to watch"
Shawshank Redemption and The Wolf of Wall Street are in the latter category. As are Scum, Full Metal Jacket, American Beauty, Trainspotting, Rita, Sue and Bob Too, Wish You Were Here

I like my female co-stars to do more than scream ineffectively whilst the protagonist fights the enemy goons.

The females in Indiana Jones were not all simply there to scream. Karen Allen’s character in both films was shown to be almost as capable as Indiana. I don’t want to spoil The Last Crusade but the female in that film was strong. The only one that was “screaming ineffectively” was Willie. Who I actually didn’t mind. She was quite funny and actually saved Indie and Short Round while having all those insects crawl all over her!

Agreed. A lot of films are being listed just because they make for uncomfortable viewing.

Exactly. Princess Leia in the original movies was the only female but she was amazingly capable . Killed Jabba even if she had next to nothing on

The sex lives of the potato men

I remember one controversy of the time when it was made, regarding one of the reviews that appeared prominently on the promo poster.

IIRC, the quote that they proudly selectively used was "One of the best films ever made"; but the full quote was actually something along the lines of "If you truly think that this is one of the best films ever made, you need to be locked up for life in a darkened room, for the protection of society" !
