Old fashioned things you have in your home

Had a friend up for a catch up today, I am redecorating and I had asked what she thought of my home beforehand, she said “well it was a bit old fashioned wasn’t it?!” So I am genuinely interested what things in a house makes it old fashioned!

For me I think of old style grill gas fires, textured and painted over wallpaper, and retro patterned carpets....lots of royal doulton figurines.

Jollyjoy · 28/12/2024 20:30

She probably just meant things that were dated. Until I decorated recently I had some woodchip ceilings that I'd call pretty old fashioned. Simply things that are no longer in fashion that's all.

Didn’t you ask her what she meant? It wasn’t a very nice thing to say!

Fully tiled bathroom, the type with plain tiles then random floral ones interspersed.

Old kitchen cabinets (as in 25+ years)

Dark doors with cheap handles

Patterned carpets

I like dado rails with patterned wallpaper underneath and plain above. It's a shame it's old fashioned now.

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 28/12/2024 20:45

Artex ceilings - unfortunately I have these

Patterned or coloured carpets

Floral tiles

Orangey pine kitchen cupboards with twisted metal handles

UPVC doors

Coloured bathroom suites with faux Victorian style taps

Wallpaper/dado rail combo

Those little mats/covers you put on sofa arms and backs to keep them clean

Overly floral sofas and chairs

Matching furniture

Professional family portraits

TheTecknician · 28/12/2024 20:45

Cassette players, turntable for vinyl, corkscrew (most wine bottles are screw cap now), fitted wardrobes in bedroom (1987 vintage), Artex ceilings throughout.

Vignoble · 28/12/2024 20:47

I have a coal-fired radiator in the greenhouse - does that count?

Doggymummar · 28/12/2024 20:47

I have a 1950s rental. Last updated in the 80s, everything's old fashioned

piscofrisco · 28/12/2024 20:51

I have one artex ceiling. Why the previous owners only left one god knows. Pain in the arse. And we had dark wood double glazing til we had it sprayed.

I've got a very old but still perfectly working teasmaid but I love it so it's staying!

TotemPolly · 28/12/2024 20:51

In my friends lounge she has about 25 / 30 dog ornaments . I think that's quite old fashioned .
I'm not saying don't have any ( of any type ) but a room packed with them reminds me of an older person's house .

TotemPolly · 28/12/2024 20:54

Haha agree about artex ceilings , we are doing up our house room by room and still have a few ceilings like that to get rid of .

minipie · 28/12/2024 20:56

The wallpaper & dado rail combo is absolutely right back in. Panelling under the dado, strong colour on the panelling & dado and then wallpaper in toning colour.

True.
As is vinyl and turntables…

But if you like them, what does it matter if they are supposedly old fashioned? Surely you decorate your house to suit your taste, not other people's? I have no idea if other people would see some or all of my house as being old fashioned and I really don't care - it's how I like it and we haven't gutted our Victorian house to make a bland open plan downstairs with a square box extension stuck on the back.

thisoldcity · 28/12/2024 21:05

I have a tea cosy.

Maybe I will.

Landline phone!

MaMoosie · 28/12/2024 21:08

Does my husband count?

suburburban · 28/12/2024 21:09

So do I

I also have flocked wallpaper which has been painted over because I don't trust what is underneath

I’ve just spent £500 on a new turntable 😂

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 21:12

Woodchip - sadly I also have some of that but it's far too much faff to get rid of it.

A CD collection.

I would say paper books but I was in Waterstones yesterday and there was a massive queue of people buying real books after Christmas.

But the latter two will leave the house when I move (or before). Objects are irrelevant as they move out with the owners. It's the fixtures and fittings that matter - like the kitchen units or the aforementioned woodchip (though both can be changed if you can be bothered).

dynamiccactus · 28/12/2024 21:12

Also, not all wine bottles have screw tops - corkscrews are very much still needed!

Catsmere · 28/12/2024 21:13

I wouldn't know as far as the building is concerned. I've only once lived in a place built later than the 80s (a soulless granny flat I was glad to leave). My current place, in a retirement village, is very bland (white walls, grey carpet - ugh) and was probably built in the 80s or 90s. The older-style things in it are my possessions, like my mum's carnival glass bowl or early 60s coffee table.
