Old fashioned things you have in your home

Had a friend up for a catch up today, I am redecorating and I had asked what she thought of my home beforehand, she said “well it was a bit old fashioned wasn’t it?!” So I am genuinely interested what things in a house makes it old fashioned!

I had picture rails put in again to my 1930 semi... and have unfitted carpets over floor boards. Love the original fireplace in one of the bedrooms (though also love having central heating!)

We just moved into a house that hasn’t been touched since the 90s. Artex ceiling in every room, very dark patterned carpet, pine kitchen cabinets, tv and phone sockets all over the place, very frilly lampshades and magnolia paint in bathrooms. I quite like it but it will be getting updated slowly

My husband 😉

Landline phone!

We have no choice. The mobile signal is very poor where we live and despite all of Virgin's claims our wifi isn't reliable enough to not have a landline.

I’ve just spent £500 on a new turntable 😂

We’ve just done this too and a fortune on the vinyl… brings us so much joy!

old fashioned I would consider pine furniture/floors maybe a bit old fashioned. Every room painted a different colour with no real thought to design. Yes to the artex ceilings and floral carpets.

Sossijiz · 28/12/2024 21:25

An aspidistra.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 28/12/2024 21:32

Paintings of animals on the cave walls - très passé.

Vettrianofan · 28/12/2024 21:36

An upright piano. I don't know many who have one in their living room.

YourGladSquid · 28/12/2024 21:37

Better old fashioned than a depressingly grey wasteland.

The only thing left old fashioned I have is my vile, horrible bathroom. That definitely needs doing.

Elphame · 28/12/2024 21:39

Clutter- lots of ornaments and random useless objects

Dado rail
terracotta
wallpaper and border combo
green bath:pink bath

This is describing my childhood home. Terracotta ragrolled paint effect over wood chip, with a wallpaper border combo 😂😂

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 28/12/2024 21:42

Those wing back chairs with a throw for warmth. A Tiffany lamp. A pelmet over heavy curtains. Shelves filled with books. Photos and paintings and pictures in assorted frames on the walls.

GameOfJones · 28/12/2024 21:43

I have artex ceilings and dado rails in my house. Neither bother me actually, I'm in no rush to change them.

An old fashioned thing I have in my house is a candle snuffer. It is extremely useful and I use it daily.

Echobelly · 28/12/2024 21:45

When we first moved into this house, it still had a downstairs loo you could only reach by going outside (the loo was in the house, as it were, but the door to it was down the side of the back of the house). There was also a bathroom tiled floor to ceiling with brown 70s tiles!

WolfFoxHare · 28/12/2024 21:46

Some of the things people are
mentioning are blowing my
mind. Books?!? Fitted wardrobes?! Paintings and photos?!

poetryandwine · 28/12/2024 21:47

TheTecknician · 28/12/2024 20:45

Cassette players, turntable for vinyl, corkscrew (most wine bottles are screw cap now), fitted wardrobes in bedroom (1987 vintage), Artex ceilings throughout.

Good wine (say, £30+ per bottle, Continental) still mostly comes with corkscrews. I agree it is merely tradition/prejudice but there it is.

pudseypie · 28/12/2024 21:47

Every room in my house has artex ceilings in a variety of patterns, ranging from snot drips pattern to small swirly circles courtesy of the previous owner. We've never been in a position to get them sorted. I now don't notice them.

FeegleFrenzy · 28/12/2024 21:47

Technically outside the house but we have an outside loo in full working order which we still use. We also have an indoor loo but only one so if someone can’t wait they use the outside one.

HaddyAbrams · 28/12/2024 21:47

I have artex ceilings, woodchip wallpaper, and plain tiles in the bathroom with some patterned ones randomly placed. Oh and coloured carpets.

But it's rented so I can't do anything about it.

Slingsanderrors · 28/12/2024 21:48

My husband. He doesn’t like change, but I’m getting there slowly

Jennyathemall · 28/12/2024 21:48

DH

Sidebeforeself · 28/12/2024 21:48

@CheeseandMarmiteToastie

Those little mats/covers you put on sofa arms and backs to keep them clean….are called antimacassars !

Horrified that people think shelves filled with books are oldfashioned!

Sidebeforeself · 28/12/2024 21:49

My suggestion would be a serving hatch.

poetryandwine · 28/12/2024 21:50

Also amongst audiophiles a turntable and vinyl are considered ubercool

Beaverbridge · 28/12/2024 21:50

I must be the only person who likes artex!!.
