Old fashioned things you have in your home

Had a friend up for a catch up today, I am redecorating and I had asked what she thought of my home beforehand, she said “well it was a bit old fashioned wasn’t it?!” So I am genuinely interested what things in a house makes it old fashioned!

I do too. In the first house I owned I had the downstairs ceilings artexed in a sort of wavy shell pattern.

My hall has the jaggy pointy stuff on the walls like those Christmas cakes you get with skiing figures on. It was here when I moved in, couldn't afford to have it removed also I had a toddler who didn't touch as it was jaggy!!. Win win. Family keep telling me to have it plastered over, but they can do when I shuffle off. Hall also has 70,s style white bannister, apparently I should have glass ones installed because that's now the style!.

I find ornaments in general quite old fashioned. Just more shit to dust isn't it

Gatekeeper · 29/12/2024 16:14

my house is a hotch potch of all different eras and styles but that's the way I like it. My sister has a sneer every now and then and calls me 'weird' but her house is dull to me.
Mine probably are...

Hornsea tea, coffee, sugar jars (were my parents)
old white sheets with 1950's merino blankets on beds (ditto)
My grandmothers wash stand (telly lives on it)
1980's patterned curtains...from a country house and very well-made
1950's police desk with 1970's moulded plastic chair
1990's black leather sofa
Tiffany lamps..lovely small ones with dragonflies on
1930's oak tallboy
ancient old Edwardian oak bed
crockery is also old as is cutlery. 1930's to 1970s

kitchen cupboards are old fashioned (1980's) but solid wood so I painted them and changed handles. Only thing I hate in my house is the kitchen and sunroom tiles floor tiles as they are fakey green slate and look shite but would cost too much to remove them and replace

I like dado rails with patterned wallpaper underneath and plain above. It's a shame it's old fashioned now.

I agree. I have dado rail in my hallway as it makes it look wider. I have neutral toned tartan wallpaper below, and paint above. I don’t care if it’s ‘old fashioned’ - taste is personal.

I agree - grey is such a dull and depressing colour.

Anaglypta wallpaper underneath the dado.
My grandmother’s upright piano
Original art nouveau fireplaces in the bedrooms
Early 20th century hardcover books
Original built in larder

I have antique light fittings, some brown furniture and land line phones. All by choice. Some old things are lovely.

EdgeofSeventy · 29/12/2024 19:08

I have an old egg slicer.
A pp mentioned a candle snuffer, I have one too.
I think coloured bathroom suites date a house.
Fairly recently in a showroom I saw a gold coloured bath and wondered why 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'm imagining the smearing when trying to clean it

choccytime · 29/12/2024 19:12

Our house is old, every wall has textured wallpaper which is painted over and the ceilings too , not artexed . We also have a Kenwood teasmade next to our bed a nice hot drink every morning without getting out of bed !

whatisforteamum · 29/12/2024 19:43

Fully mirrored wardrobe with a smoked effect.
May have been lovely 36 yrs ago.
Now I hope DH doesn't bend over.!!

Artex ceilings - unfortunately I have these

Patterned or coloured carpets

Floral tiles

Orangey pine kitchen cupboards with twisted metal handles

UPVC doors

Coloured bathroom suites with faux Victorian style taps

Wallpaper/dado rail combo

Those little mats/covers you put on sofa arms and backs to keep them clean

Overly floral sofas and chairs

Matching furniture

Professional family portraits

Found myself nodding at these (in agreement, not because I have them mind)! To your list, I would add a fluffy toilet seat cover and the little mat at the base of the toilet for blokes to piss on...😂

any decor that isn't greige with diamantes, and live, laugh, love decals apparently😜

Pur home is ridiculously old fashioned. We bought with a small inheritance but that was used up in buying so haven't been sble to do anything to it. It makes me sad that everything is like this, but at least we have a house.

Those wing back chairs with a throw for warmth. A Tiffany lamp. A pelmet over heavy curtains. Shelves filled with books. Photos and paintings and pictures in assorted frames on the walls.

Hah! You have just very accurately described our study, except for the heavy pelmet (though I'm now very tempted to get one). But that's the whole point, it's meant to look old fashioned and extremely cosy. Which it does.

cornflakecrunchie · 29/12/2024 22:06

All your houses sound fabulous!
I'd half expected everyone to say they had grey sparkly places with sofas & nothing else in the sitting room. My own house is only about 20 yrs old, but quite cottagey inside, which is good because it's full of things from every era! Things that caught my eye, things that belonged to late relatives, & I love them all.
It's all about things that make us happy, isn't it?

CockSpadget · 29/12/2024 22:07

I’m an antiques and vintage dealer, and hardly anything new decor wise comes into my home. The majority of my house would be called “old fashioned” by many, but by others would be a mid century heaven. What goes around comes around. Put whatever you like in YOUR house, make it the place where you feel most comfortable and enjoy being.

My favourite Christmas Present was a Teasmade from my supercool son 😂I can now have a cup of tea without going downstairs! He thinks my present is a good combo with a commode…haven’t got that far yet !

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 29/12/2024 23:08

You can get £8 bottles of wine with corks.

Candle snuffers are everywhere, St Eval, John Lewis etc sell them.

It's subjective OP,
Wallpaper can be beautiful if you choose an up to date pattern, same as dado rails, fireplace etc.

You can have an old fashioned sofa fabric, doesn't mean sofas are old fashioned.

Also loveatching furniture if done well.

Using this as inspiration for redoing our lounge.

I really love older, dark wood furniture. it's sturdy, made to last, and thankfully, as it's unfashionable, inexpensive.
I got the most adorable bureau for £12! they were selling it as an upcycling project!! it's beautiful as it is. someone would have ruined it by painting it grey!
