Old fashioned things you have in your home

Had a friend up for a catch up today, I am redecorating and I had asked what she thought of my home beforehand, she said “well it was a bit old fashioned wasn’t it?!” So I am genuinely interested what things in a house makes it old fashioned!

Oh I have a set of Depression glass dishes on the dressing table.
I would love a piano and a pair of wing backed chairs but there's only so much I can fit into the place.

Angrymum22 · 28/12/2024 22:08

We had our double glazing replaced last year. We stuck with dark wood colour but white on the inside. The current fashion for grey or sage looks like undercoat. We had the flush casement style which look so much better. Coloured windows look good against white but all wrong against brick. I draw a line at rendering a house just to be on trend.

we also have a patterned carpet but we were years ahead with wooden/vinyl flooring and a runner with stair rods. Took ages to source the stair rods 30yrs ago.
Also skipped the grey era, blue is the new grey apparently so our recently recovered sofas are bang up to date.
We have a lot of inherited furniture so it would not suit most mumsnetters.
Fortunately no artex.

Does my husband count?

Mine definitely does.

Colour rocks and I still want grandfather clock. We have some old mahogany loo seats definitely warmer and nicer than modern ones

CheeseandMarmiteToastie · 28/12/2024 22:10

@Sidebeforeself thanks, I couldn’t remember the word - wasn’t Macassar some kind of hair oil that would stain the chair/sofa hence the protection?

Not sure how to edit my post but other than artex I don’t have any of the things I listed but my parents do. I’d love a serving hatch though!

My mum's prize possession (despite really not being old enough for it to be so) is her hostess trolley she inherited from my Grandma. I've never seen one except the one in our family so I am assuming they are very much of their time!

QueenOfHiraeth · 28/12/2024 22:12

Today's old-fashioned is tomorrow's sought after. I've spent a fortune putting back fire surrounds that were missing from our house when we moved in.
The features we've restored are the things that stop me being the most old-fashioned thing in the house

I like dado rails with patterned wallpaper underneath and plain above. It's a shame it's old fashioned now.

We actively added a dado rail in our hallway and landing. It looks lovely!

UpSkilling · 28/12/2024 22:14

Also I love Murano glass vases. And did I mention I love orange, I was a child of the seventies and had an old orange lampshade in my white nursery and it always made me happy. I also love velvet curtains.

LaPalmaLlama · 28/12/2024 22:16

Single panel radiators
gravity fed tank system
curtains with a frilly pelmet
gas fire with fake coals

Diversion · 28/12/2024 22:18

I have committed two sins - old fashioned decor/furniture, dark wallsand a couple of coloured carpets. I have several pieces of old oak furniture which has so much more character compared to modern stuff and some of the decor on the walls are prints of very old photographs ie 1930's the same as our house. I also have an extensive CD and DVD collection as I like to own my own music and films. Not for everyone, but it is our home and we love it.

We have one, a present from my mum, it lives in the utility room and when you are producing a Christmas Dinner for twelve, it is absolutely invaluable.
It also provides storage for big dishes and non-everyday plates and bowls.
When she gave it to us we were not thrilled, but now would not want to be without it.,

An upright piano. I don't know many who have one in their living room.

So what is the option if you want a piano and don’t have room for a grand?

I do too! I play it every day so it’s in tune and in excellent condition. I traded in my previous one for it a year and a half ago. I have a keyboard in the office for when I want to work on harmony or whatever, but the piano is what I chose to play for pleasure. If it’s old fashioned, I’m not really bothered.

foyc · 28/12/2024 22:28

@TrickyD oh I don't doubt its usefulness at all having had many a wonderful dinner from it. But is yours brown faux wood like my mum's 1970s beauty?!

justasking111 · 28/12/2024 22:30

Sash windows are back. uPVC this time.

Antique furniture. One beautiful piece in a room really stands out apparently.

justasking111 · 28/12/2024 22:32

I have a hostess trolley that was my late MILs. Over 50 years old. Works perfectly still.

CandyCane5 · 28/12/2024 22:34

Wallpaper especially a 'feature wall'
Brick fireplace which takes up the whole wall
Beech light laminate flooring

Old fashioned things you have in your home
gillefc82 · 28/12/2024 22:34

For me it would be:

Artex ceilings/walls, especially when the artex isn’t just stippled but has been done with a pattern
Wood chip
1970s style wood panelling on walls
Lino
Dado rails with either different wallpaper above/below or different paints; or if you’re my parents, a combo of the two for the living room with green floral patterned wallpaper above, a painted bottle green dado rail (made from plaster not even wood) and mint green artex walls below. Would usually say my Mum has good taste, but she actually chose that decor in the mid 90s and stuck with it for about 10-15 years before coming to their senses 😂
Curtains with pelmets or flounces
Carriage clocks on the mantelpieces, especially ones that chime
Dated fabric pendant lamp shades, particularly those with fringing

CandyCane5 · 28/12/2024 22:35
  • meant to add in a house we are doing up, when we brought it, the first thing we said was how dated it was!
suburburban · 28/12/2024 22:37

Some of Our ceilings are also done with textured paint so it leaves a pattern, is that artex?

foyc · 28/12/2024 22:37

Ooh those side tables covered in table cloths. My grandparents had those.

suburburban · 28/12/2024 22:38

And we have beech laminate, does need replacing

Luckypinkduck · 28/12/2024 22:38

This is making me laugh, if corkscrews and paper books are old fashioned then I think I always will be!
