Old fashioned things you have in your home

Had a friend up for a catch up today, I am redecorating and I had asked what she thought of my home beforehand, she said “well it was a bit old fashioned wasn’t it?!” So I am genuinely interested what things in a house makes it old fashioned!

Paint effect walls (sponging, rag rolling, stippling) with a coordinated border in the bedrooms. My parents have a pink / cream one, a yellow / pale blue one and a rather daring dark green / blue / gold one.

Dark stained doors, skirting boards, stairs, built-in units.

Brown floor tiles and fake wood kitchen units.

No way to play music or watch tv in the kitchen.

Whitewash. Sash windows, 3mm glass, pegs instead of nails in the roof beams. Wattle and daub walls.

The wallpaper & dado rail combo is absolutely right back in. Panelling under the dado, strong colour on the panelling & dado and then wallpaper in toning colour.

I have literally just had this done

Some of the things people are
mentioning are blowing my
mind. Books?!? Fitted wardrobes?! Paintings and photos?!

Edited

Books - craziness.

I must be the only person who likes artex!!.

I do too. So I wouldn't change mine even if I could.

How are books old fashioned? I'll add them to my list. Along with pictures and ornaments on shelves.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 28/12/2024 21:55

A grandfather clock
A couple of antique tables
Quite a lot of old china, used for best
I live in a Georgian farmhouse.
I like old things.

TheTecknician · 28/12/2024 21:55

I once read a magazine interview with Marguerite Patten (1950s and 1960s version of Delia Smith). It was about 18 years ago and a photograph of her living room showed very dated but solid lounge furniture (probably Parker Knoll or G-Plan), a patterned carpet, teak internal folding doors with ribbed, toughened glass and a big old radiogram. Everything looked perfect, loved, used and preserved. From an era when things were meant to last. It was a real time capsule but fully functional.

Clingfilm · 28/12/2024 21:55

Most of the things mentioned aren't old fashioned if done well and mixed with the modern (maybe except artex 😁), I mean Buckingham Palace isn't full of the latest furniture and colours but your wouldn't call it old fashioned... I'm guessing your decor may have been from an obvious decade eg 80s florals or late 90s bold colours?

MrsSethGecko · 28/12/2024 21:57

In my house

Cassette player/CD player with radio
CD collection
Artex ceilings
Net curtains
Patterned wallpaper/dado rail
Tea pot, cosy, tea cups and saucers
Butter dish
1960s Pyrex dinner service/Eternal Beau dinner service
Tablecloth
1940s wardrobe, bedside table, dressing table and dining table
Landline phone

I don't like modern things much. I like old fashioned.

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 28/12/2024 21:57

We also have a lot of original paintings and Victorian family photos

An upright piano. I don't know many who have one in their living room.

Currently looking for a good secondhand one.

SinnerBoy · 28/12/2024 21:57

1880 upright piano.

1900 original fireplaces with beautiful floral ceramic tiles - X4.

1900 original dado and picture rails.

Outside toilet - now in the garage - black Bakelite cistern.

One original ceiling rose, all original coving. Plaster arch with flowers, leaves and young woman's faces at the bottom, either side, in the downstairs hall

I have 1950s wardrobes, and dressing table.

My dinner services are both 60s/70s.

I do too. In the first house I owned I had the downstairs ceilings artexed in a sort of wavy shell pattern.

My suggestion would be a serving hatch.

lol we still have one but it opens to a false wall and doubles as drinks storage

Again removing affected decor so it got left

NoraLuka · 28/12/2024 22:00

I have my grandma’s wooden kitchen cabinet, which she got from an older relative so must date back to the late 19th century at least. I’m not getting rid of it and I don’t care how many people say it looks heavy and old fashioned.

Why would I want a TV in the kitchen? Mind you, I don't have a TV in the living room either - they're so ugly, and ruin your room.

Bellyblueboy · 28/12/2024 22:03

All grey rooms, mirrored furniture, patterned carpets, leather high back dining chairs, dried flower arrangements. Anything that was ‘trendy’ over ten years ago.

TheTecknician · 28/12/2024 20:45

Cassette players, turntable for vinyl, corkscrew (most wine bottles are screw cap now), fitted wardrobes in bedroom (1987 vintage), Artex ceilings throughout.

Vinyl turntable back in vogue with the young especially from the 70s 😁

MrsSethGecko · 28/12/2024 22:03

I lived in a flat about ten years ago that had a serving hatch and a drying rack over the bath, I loved them. Drying rack was so useful.

I like artex too.

foyc · 28/12/2024 22:03

Having spent many years in military married quarters, I'd say:

  1. wood chip walls
  2. fake grill fire places
  3. colourful carpets
  4. hospital style floors in bathrooms and kitchens (not sure what it's called!)
  5. exposed pipes (maybe one day they will be coveted like exposed beams!)
  6. chicken wire fences

And growing up in an old unrenovated home:

  1. artex ceilings
  2. dado rails with contrasting wallpaper
  3. avocado bathroom suite

It's no wonder I ended up in a new build!

Those wing back chairs with a throw for warmth. A Tiffany lamp. A pelmet over heavy curtains. Shelves filled with books. Photos and paintings and pictures in assorted frames on the walls.

I love a wing back chair with a blanket, lots of books, a bit of chintz and a dado rail, heavy curtains and no overhead lighting, just lamps all so cosy and fireplaces.

Better old fashioned than a depressingly grey wasteland.

The only thing left old fashioned I have is my vile, horrible bathroom. That definitely needs doing.

Totally agree. Give me colour! And if a bland background is inescapable, then warm colours, please.

Friend is an interior designer you are spot on.

DancingLions · 28/12/2024 22:06

Probably a lot of things in my house could be deemed old fashioned. But then I live in a victorian house so it works for me.

A lot of things deemed modern, I really don't like. Pet peeve is spotlights. I can just about handle them in a kitchen but I find them very cold and clinical in other rooms. I also hate bifold doors. I don't like huge windows and I find them quite industrial looking.

A pp mentioned a kitchen that is 25+ years old. Mines about that age, but last year I painted all the doors, put on new handles and got new work tops. I love it. The cupboards themselves were still sturdy and are in a configuration that works so why would I spend £££ on a new kitchen?

Tbh it sounds like your friend was being a bit bitchy. But then you know her, maybe she wasn't. I couldn't give a stuff what anyone else thinks of my house. I live here and I love it.
