So I was out for a Boxing Day run this morning (madness many of you may think) but not as mad I thought as the folk queuing outside Lush in the city centre waiting for the doors to open and the sale to start.

Please, what am I misssing out on? I've never shopped at Lush! TIA

No idea.

The smell is overpowering.

I used to like one of their moisturisers which used to be a special treat for me at about £11 for a small pot but the price has more than doubled.

I would boycott them because I don't like their politics but the truth is that I probably wouldn't shop there anyway.

OneOliveEagle · 26/12/2024 20:49

I like the Karma soap and Turkish delight scented body spray. I buy these despite their awful politics, and pushy and annoying staff.

I used to frequent the one in Leeds which had its own overpriced basement spa at one time - and Lush briefly had an equally overpriced make-up shop opposite called B. Again, very short lived.

Daisychainsandglitter · 26/12/2024 20:54

Oh I love it! My faves are snow fairy and yog nog so try and stick up at Christmas time.

I used to like Ultrabland for getting makeup off but then cleansing balms/oils became a thing so I never bothered buying anymore. Same with the shampoo bars.

Ultrabland used to be good when it was made with peanut oil but then they changed it to almond oil (probably because of allergens) and it was rubbish.

I'm perfectly happy with polyester and scents in general. 🤷‍♀️

The two go togther for me - I can't wear polyester because I use a natural deodorant! It's fine with natural fibres but if I wear polyester I ming!

I used to shop at Lush 10+ years ago when I started reducing plastic, but now it's easier to find solid shampoos/conditioners/body bars that are cheaper, longer lasting and better working.

Needmoresleep · 26/12/2024 21:09

DD used to love Lush and queue in Regents Street on Boxing Day, coming away with armfuls of stuff. DH liked their shampoo bars.

But binders and other political virtue signaling put us all off. I can cope with perfume in my bubble bath, but don’t want politics.

I understand that they have been making quite heavy losses in the last couple of years. What a shame.

purplecorkheart · 26/12/2024 21:23

When I think of Lush I always think of the thread in Classics about the Glitter Bath Bomb!!!

Tbh honest the only thing I have ever bought in Lush is the sleep lavander body lotion. I liked it but hated the hard sell I got in the shop buying it so never returned.

wendywoopywoo222 · 26/12/2024 21:27

Love Lush shower gels and candles.

My son in law works there so get loads of free products especially bath bombs which I pass on

Sidebeforeself · 26/12/2024 21:39

@Iamanunsafebuilding Not “weird” at all…read what others have said about this company's distateful ethics.

poppetandmog · 26/12/2024 21:42

The online sale this year seems to only be on their app. Can't be arsed downloading an app and setting up an account just to be able to browse, so won't be buying anything this year. Don't have a local store.

Katypp · 26/12/2024 22:08

Hskatkat · 26/12/2024 17:43

Of course there are loads of cheap candle to buy if you so wish.
You buy whatever you like but I don't buy synthetic scented candles & would not consider Yankee an upgrade.
Cheap nasty scents.

You are really proving my point @Hskatkat.
I'm sure you are too special and are far too sophisticated to allow a Yankee Candle over your threshold, but surely you must realise that for many, a candle costing £10+ would be an indulgent buy?

Do you "need" or "want" it?
I've never bought or received one.
St Eval is a similar price point and really nice

I've really struggled with shampoo over the years, was always greasy even after washing. Lush does two shampoos and a conditioner I love and have been using them for about 15 years. It's super fresh and light and leaves my hair clean and in good condition. I'm not really a fan of most other products though. A lot of them are very floral and a bit sickly for me so I tend to stick to the shampoo and conditioner. I've got a voucher to use in the spa though so will go along and give it a go.

Which soaps and conditioners do you use?

Levriers · 26/12/2024 22:45

I hate it - it stinks. Far too strong smelling for me

Readysetgooo · 27/12/2024 04:21

@TurquoiseDreamCatcher I use Cynthia Sylvia Stout shampoo (it was discontinued for a bit so now only available online or in a flagship store) or Seanik shampoo bar and super milk conditioner which is a leave in spray conditioner. None of them have that strong flowery smell that I associate with lush. The Cynthia shampoo is stout and lemon; Seanik is sea weed, salt and lemon; and super milk is oats, almond and coconut. Lush provide free samples of everything so you can always try before you buy.

Liltzero · 27/12/2024 08:02

Gosh what a lot of replies. I hadn't heard about the questionable campaigning by Lush so will continue to give a miss.

The other shop I see a queue outside is Pandora. Another shop I've yet to cross the threshold of!

I like the Snow Fairy shower gel that comes out every Christmas - smells like pear drops. Really expensive though ( £7 was the cheapest & you get very little for your money). Also like the chocolate shower creme that DD16 has bought in the past & the sleepy cream ( not sure of the exact name) which contains lavender & smells amazing. I buy Lush massage bars for my DSil for Christmas sometimes.

Hskatkat · 27/12/2024 08:23

Pandora is always busy after Christmas again often returns (a friend's sister works in one and says the first day after Xmas is one of the busiest dates for returns)

Finewine76 · 26/12/2024 16:44

Could well have been waiting for a replacement! My son opened his present from there and it was used!

TBF on Lush are you sure this wasn't a regifted present!

NormaLouiseBates · 27/12/2024 08:33

I used to love Lush but it's got so expensive now that I don't bother anymore. Would still be more than happy to receive a gift from there though! Their RubRubRub shower scrub is gorgeous. I've never got over them discontinuing the Yuzu & Cocoa shower crème and I still check the website every now and then to see if they've brought it back 😭

nigellalawsonsmicrowave · 27/12/2024 08:35

I can't stand the smell. Way too overpowering. I only ever pop in for gifts for others.

EveryDayisFriday · 27/12/2024 08:39

I used to shop at Lush but the prices have been increasing too much and the staff are too in your face. I rate their soaps and shampoo bars though. The soap fragrances my whole bathroom.

Mylittlebobble · 27/12/2024 08:47

I don't buy from there as seems expensive and my DD isn't fussed on scented bath products. I went Christmas shopping with a friend beginning of December and we went in as she really likes it. It was heaving in there; massive queues. It's only a small shop though so maybe that added to the effect. I waited outside.

Talipesmum · 27/12/2024 10:33

NannyR · 26/12/2024 17:16

I used to love it, maybe 20 years ago. They used to make some really nice products - Skinny Dip shower gel and Forever in Bloom shampoo spring to mind. But they discontinued them and started to do gimmicky but impractical stuff like frozen shower gel and tubs of shampoo with salt in it for example. I continued buying the soap bars for a while but they became too expensive.

They have recently ish brought back a lot of the older fave shower gels and a few other products - for a while you could get Skinny Dip again (I bought about 15 bottles). It’s all gone now though, but there might be a few expensive bottles popping up on eBay. They are continuing to sell sonic death monkey and Tramp though - my other old faves.

This is also how I defeat the enthusiastic noisy sales assistants - I engage them in conversation about my favourite old products that were discontinued before many of them were born. They tend to leave me alone then!
