The Christmas tree is down!

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 12:42

Just taken down the main living room tree, absolute workout getting it back in the box and as usual I found a couple of stars once I'd packed away the decorations.

Trying to get all the trees down today so I can deep clean the house before New Years.

Anyone else just want their space back and taking decorations down today?

I leave mine up until about the 3 January. My birthday is 1 Jan and I like it up for NYE

No. Today is only the second day of Christmas.

This, the Christmas season is only starting

Jellycatspyjamas · 26/12/2024 13:10

No I’ll take it down after new year, Christmas has only just started and I love the house looking festive.

Each to their own.

i don’t normally take mine down until New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day but I would never judge anyone who does on Boxing Day.

what baffles me more is the shock/horror from other people who can’t grasp that not everyone loves Christmas or gets into the festive spirit.

I bloody hate it, I’ve lost too many significant people in my life for me to love it, I struggle with the whole of Christmas, even putting the tree up is painful and a constant reminder dh and dm are no longer here. My gran died on. Christmas Eve when I was a child so it’s always been tainted anyway.

livingafulllife · 26/12/2024 13:12

I never put a tree up.
Its 12 days of xmas but every year it seems to start earlier more like 3 months of xmas.

Pohgi · 26/12/2024 13:13

mine is down, had a crappy Christmas and just really looking forward to the new year and and a fresh start

LuckysDadsHat · 26/12/2024 13:14

I like my tree down quickly but boxing day is a bit too soon! It's still Christmas in my eyes. Boxing day is a more relaxed Christmas day to our family. It will come down Saturday or Sunday here, it may have come down tomorrow but we have husband's family coming tomorrow.

Redmat · 26/12/2024 13:07

Trees never used to go up until mid December and then stayed until 6th Jan. It's only in the last 15 years or so we've had them going up in November and being torn down when Christmas has barely started. Ridiculous to take it down today !

Edited

I think a lot of it has to do with social media. I think people like to post who puts the tree first and then who takes them down first.
It’s sad really that Christmas has lost all meaning. I’m older and putting trees up mid Dec and taking them down in Jan used to be the norm.

BendingSpoons · 26/12/2024 13:15

Mine will stay up until 5th Jan. But then we only have 1 tree and limited decorations elsewhere, so it doesn't impact cleaning too much.

ChristmasPudd1990 · 26/12/2024 13:16

Why???? It's still Christmas 🤦‍♀️

crumblingschools · 26/12/2024 13:16

@Parker231 the tradition of Christmas is 12 days of Christmas

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/12/2024 13:16

🌲🌲🌲Oh no, we always keep our (one) tree up til 12th night, per tradition. I'm never enthused about housework or cleaning, I find it odd that so many people seem to fetishise it nowadays.

Good choice for your first post on Mumsnet OP! You will get lots of reaction and attention.

doodleschnoodle · 26/12/2024 13:16

Noooo, Christmas has only just begun! I thought we took ours down early, on Jan 1st or 2nd usually! But the 26th! Scandalised I am! Xmas ShockXmas ShockXmas ShockXmas Grin

Scrabbelator · 26/12/2024 13:06

The period leading up to Christmas is Advent, not Christmas itself. Christmas is from Dec 25th - Jan 5th.

Even if people don't adhere to the traditional 12 days, I can't understand the logic of putting a tree up super early only take it down as soon as Christmas day is over.

Because for them the Christmas celebrations are over - they may be back at work and now looking forward to the new year celebrations without the remnants of Christmas left out.

ILikeMySuitcase · 26/12/2024 13:17

Ours have been up since November 10th, not sick of them, I absolutely adore Christmas however I need to have everything down and the house cleaned top to bottom for New Years eve.

I'm working between 29th - 1st so won't be able to do it then, have family visiting tomorrow so unlikely to have time & i have 5 Christmas trees to take down. Plus I'll be swapping from Christmas to a few wintery decorations.

Our tree was bought snd put up only the night before Christmas due to sudden medical issues. I think we will leave it up to enjoy it through January at this rate. My 92 year old mother has kept a tree up for the last three years, suitably decorated by her carers for every interim holiday. People do a lot of weird things.

@Parker231 the tradition of Christmas is 12 days of Christmas

For you it is, for others there are different traditions. For us the main celebration is 6th December for Sinterklaas - that is our tradition.

ssd · 26/12/2024 13:19

Why bother putting it up if you're in a mad rush to take it down? Christ, live a little

Cantthinkofonenow · 26/12/2024 13:19

Overthebow · 26/12/2024 12:48

No, Christmas trees are for Christmas, it’s the whole point. And it’s still Christmas!

Christmas is over after Christmas Day

They’ve probably had it up for nearly a month by now

InaChristmastizz · 26/12/2024 13:20

Decorations up on 10th November? Are you trying to win the prize for earliest decs on your street or something? Very bizarre. 😂

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 26/12/2024 13:20

Mine went up on the 1st of December and I’ll probably take it down by new year. I have a lighter work schedule so it’ll be a chance to get some cleaning and decluttering done.

Wildywondrous · 26/12/2024 13:21

That's what New Years Day is for, it's the most boring day of the year so perfect for taking the decorations down and having a good clean ready for starting the new year.

doodleschnoodle · 26/12/2024 13:21

Tbh I would be sick of them too if they'd been up since November 10th!

I don't really understand how they stop you cleaning your house though unless the place is literally festooned. We have a couple of trees and some lights, alas it's still perfectly possible to clean our house, much to my disappointment.
