Our Ring doorbell has just been stolen

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 06:08

We left the house at 3am to take dd to airport. Five minutes later the doorbell was stolen. But the odd thing was, there was no footage of the thief. How???

Just reported to police.

Ffs. Does this mean they were watching us leave the house?! Will they come back to burgle us??

Well yes but she said it was stolen. Not that she didn’t know whether it was stolen or not…. The wire cutting is only relevant if you chose not to believe her

Rosscameasdoody · 17/12/2024 07:54

So it seems they’ve jammed the Wi-Fi so they’re not filmed stealing the doorbell. If they were intending to break in later why go to the trouble of stealing the doorbell first when they had the means to simply jam it while they broke in ? Maybe they simply wanted the doorbell.

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 06:44

But we never leave the house at that time. What are the odds that someone was watching us the very night we leave at that time? I don't like it.

I would be a bit cautious and make sure you lock and double-check the locks on your car and house when you're home or even leaving. At night, don't open the door to anyone you do not know well.
I hope you get it replaced soon and can do something to help keep it from being stolen. They will probably try again.

I'm sorry that it happened to you because it must be very unsettling. 😟

They use signal jammers to block the WiFi. One of our neighbours had their car stolen and the thieves jammed the ring doorbell so it didn’t pick up any footage of them.

There are other brands of camera that are wired instead of relying on wifi.

For example, we have security cameras (yes, plural, - we live in a very remote place and burglaries are not unknown here, although they more often go for the farms) that are wired up to a computer that records all the video.

This means that a wifi blocker has no effect. They also don't work as a doorbell just as cameras.

The brand we have is Reolink but there are plenty of other similar ones as well.

I thought ring doorbells were wireless?

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 07:54

NippyCrab · 17/12/2024 06:48

Anyone around you got a camera or dashcam you can check? X

Asked the neighbours. Waiting for them to reply!

Do you have any neighbours or family locally who can check on your house in the morning?

Id be very concerned about home security right now, you may very well have had a break in.

I'm home! How would I have noticed that the bell had gone otherwise?

bouncydog · 17/12/2024 07:57

When you replace it, it might also be worth considering another ring camera placed much higher up on the house covering the drive/pathway that can’t be easily removed by any thieves. Do you also pay the annual subscription that saves all of the recordings as if it was going to be intentionally stolen there might be a good chance that the thieves were spotted earlier scoping things out.

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 07:57

@OneQuaintLemonHare - key information which you omitted from your OP 🙄

God, I'm sorry. I'd just got in and was worried. I thought people would know what 'stolen' meant without me having to spell it out.

We bought a metal case for our which wraps around the door to help prevent theft. It wasn’t expensive and while it is a bit faffy when changing the battery, it’s worth it.

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 07:58

Ohhappydagger · 17/12/2024 07:43

Possibly. Someone I know recently had their car stolen and right before that their ring door bell as well as all the ring doorbells of their immediate neighbours had been blacked out. Not sure how they managed to do that.

😱

BellissimoGecko · 17/12/2024 07:59

@ThisWeeksGripe - they connect wirelessly to wifi but the ring part is wired to our old doorbell.

FeegleFrenzy · 17/12/2024 07:59

I'd be concerned that they're planning on coming back in the next day or 2 to burgle the house thinking you are on holiday. I wouldn't be leaving the house empty for a while, not even during the day if you can help it.

Yes, we have a subscription. Nothing else suspicious all day yesterday.

Good idea. Am thinking about CCTV now.

I’ve hear about this quite a lot, especially in flats. Some neighbours have them pointing at the opposite flat or just in general people don’t want them recording their conversations as they walk through corridors. So the cameras get ripped out.

SnoopysHoose · 17/12/2024 08:01

It's more likely it's been stolen as it's picked up something in the street/opposite your house rather than targeting your home.

Cazs818 · 17/12/2024 08:02

Mine was jammed and our car stolen within seconds they really are pointless things , can buy the jammer for less then £20 disables the WiFi and gets you into any car

you are better of buying a hard wired cctv system

after months of arguing ring finally gave me a full refund on the device and subscription

Hardly “key information” that was purposefully omitted is it? This is Mumsnet, not the police. This isn’t the “gotcha” moment you think it was. Ridiculous. 🙄 She said it was stolen, if you can’t take that at face value then that’s a you problem.

Edited

Nobody walks past that close to our bell. Doesn't pick up conversation from the pavement. Detached house.

And why nick it at 3am?

If you have cameras with an SD card it doesn't matter if they are jammed as the data is stored. Here are some:

www.eufy.com/blogs/security-camera/security-camera-with-sd-card

We have a Eufy camera system (but they have doorbells including wired ones too) which is great as you don't have to pay for subscription. Really happy with it.

Well then perhaps the reason is burglary…who knows. I have properly installed CCTV wired and aimed high on my house perhaps consider this.
