Does this ring look cheap / tacky

I rarely wear jewellery but trying to change that, as always admire others ‘everyday’ / signature jewellery.

During their BF sale I picked up this Monica vinader ring as I loved the look of it on the model, but worry it maybe looks a bit tacky to be wearing yellowy gold jewellery. Opinions please?

if it’s of any relevance I have dark skin (warm toned) so guidance is to wear gold jewellery. However whenever I look around silver is far more common for ‘everyday’ looks

No it’s a simple gold ring.

you love it so wear it!

LoyalTaupeTiger · 15/12/2024 21:38

Wear what you like to wear.

Gold or silver is good. It's more about size I think. And many coloured stones.
That one is not flashy. It's more vintage style, I m not keen

JennyWren83 · 15/12/2024 21:39

It's what you like that counts. Who cares what ransoms on mumsnet think!

This is lovely, simple and elegant, not tacky at all.

xyz111 · 15/12/2024 21:46

Not my taste at all. But if you like it, then wear it. That's the beauty, we can all be individual 😀

FloordrobeIsGoingToGetME · 15/12/2024 21:47

I have a gold wedding ring and wear rose gold watch and rings.

I went through a platinum stage but I like gold and rose gold more at the moment.

Wear what you love ❤️

devilspawn · 15/12/2024 22:17

I have an olive skin tone and I normally go for copper colours.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 15/12/2024 22:20

It’s a bit too plain for me but I do like gold jewellery.

SereneCapybara · 15/12/2024 22:24

I like it. But DH bought me a MV pendant last Christmas. The vermeil is already wearing off to show the silver underneath and the other day the chain broke. TBF I had barely taken it off all year. But don't expect it to stay gold for very long unless it is occasional wear.

BasiliskStare · 15/12/2024 22:24

Well @unfold1 - if yellow gold is tacky - I'll take that on the chin. My wedding ring , engagement ring , watch and a bracelet are all yellow gold. I wear them every day. After 30 years I have seen silver , platinum , rose gold etc come in and out of fashion but I think mine suit me & I don't think they look tacky. I am sure other opinions are available.

I think the ring is pretty and not ostentatious so it's a yes from me to wear it.

BasiliskStare · 15/12/2024 22:26

@SereneCapybara - That's interesting - I think some of her jewellery is pretty but I do worry about the vermeil wearing off.

Bonbon21 · 15/12/2024 22:37

I would expect the gold plating to show wear quite quickly if you are going to wear the ring everyday.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/12/2024 22:49

Huh? How is yellow gold tacky? I myself find platinum weird - like how do you know if it’s silver or not?

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 15/12/2024 22:49

But yes I would be concerned about this being gold plated - and probably save up to buy a real gold version if you like the look.

WalterdelaMare · 15/12/2024 22:51

Not my taste, but a completely inoffensive ring.

I have loads of MV jewellery including rings - always admired.

RabbitsRock · 15/12/2024 23:03

I have an almost identical one which was £10 from M & S.

Gagagardener · 15/12/2024 23:22

Tbh: yes. If you want gold, get hallmarked gold. In carats. The '18k' (US usage) refers to the layer of 'vermeil' (=coating) over a ring made of sterling silver. The engraving of the star is blurred. You should be able to find a nice secondhand gold ring for about this price.

I like her style a lot because it is similar to some much more expensive contemporary classic designs. But she is definitely at the affordable end of pricing for a reason.

caringcarer · 16/12/2024 00:27

I wouldn't wear any jewellery that wasn't solid gold. I don't like gold over silver. You can get some lovely pre-owned solid gold jewellery yellow or white gold.

In the USA, a ring marked 18K means that the ring is 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts other metals. 24K is pure gold, 18K will be mixed, 14K mixed more, etc. But it does not mean that it is vermeil over sterling. FFS!🙄

I would love to wear pure gold, but 24K gold is quite expensive, as is platnium. Between the two, I love platnium, as I did have a ring once that was 18K but was soft and thin band so it bent easily.

DressOrSkirt · 16/12/2024 03:17

Not tacky at all, it's subtle/understated.
I have jewellery in all colours so I can match the hardware on my bags/shoes.

I don't have anything from this brand but have gold vermeil from other brands (Missoma, Pandora, Thomas Sabo etc) and haven't had any issues with the plating coming off.

As you're experimenting with jewellery I think it's sensible to go with this option instead of pure gold which is going to set you back a lot more.

FannyFernackerpants · 16/12/2024 06:09

I wouldn't pay £78 for that regardless of the colour.
It's just costume jewellery that can be picked up far more cheaply at most high street stores.

CyranoDeBergerQuack · 16/12/2024 06:34

It does look cheap
But then again, many of the 'designer' things in life look like they've been designed by a class of 6 year olds and people with more money than sense unironically spend £££££s looking daft.

Jostuki · 16/12/2024 06:54

It looks similar to the ones from
This company which are a lot cheaper and claim not go tarnish.
