Why are we still celebrating Michael Jackson?

Just that really…this man shared his bed with children but it was excused as him being ‘childlike’
I know his music is iconic but seriously, there are so many live tribute shows to celebrate him and his music is played everywhere. It feels wrong on so many levels.
Surely we can’t just pick & choose who we accept predatory behaviour from…?!

It really pisses me off when they play his stuff on the radio and I switch station. I can't hear it without remembering what he did and I don't want to think about that when I'm just tootling in to work. There is a huge difference between people just listening to what they want at home / playing his music in the context of talking about the development of pop and celebrating him / pushing his music on people who don't want it. Save it for streaming and keep the radio stuff clean

So the question was what would you do with the loft extension built by a dead paedophile builder.

And my point in response would be - a known paedophile (which MJ was when he was alive) wouldn’t be widely employed to build anyone’s extension, regardless of how good he was. Some people may choose to turn a blind eye and employ him regardless, but they’d be guilty by association.

Mmhmmn · 16/12/2024 20:37

I think people are probably celebrating his music rather than him, the person. I don’t think tribute shows are necessary though! Wouldn’t be seen dead at one personally.

I’m not a fan of his music so would happily choose not to ever listen to it. But he was never actually found guilty of anything, was he? He was undoubtedly a creepy weirdo, but he won’t be cancelled without proof of something.

Neither was Jimmy Saville....

Honestly OP it's so bizarre.

Imagine if he was doing this and was just Kev the painter decorator down the street.

DoubleShotEspresso · 16/12/2024 21:31

I think it's perfectly possible to acknowledge his talents and success, but equally possible to separate these from the allegations that never actually amounted to any convinctions.

There's no question he led a bizarre life and was ill advised in so many areas, but he was never actually found guilty in court.

The difference was, MJ was actually held to account and found not guilty in court. JS was never "outed" until after his death so never went to court. JS was found guilty after he died, MJ was found not guilty when alive and has never been found guilty after death like JS was.

You'd have the same choice. Nobody would force you to go to kev the painter decorator tribute show either.

Countless people aren't found guilty, but it doesn't mean they're innocent.

MJ was a prolific child abuser who used his wealth and status to hide in plain sight.

I bet you would not be so happy for someone to act like judge, jury and executioner to someone you love.

Agree with this.

SirChenjins · 18/12/2024 17:58

How many people (men) accused of sexual offences are found guilty (or even get to court ) compared to the number of cases that occur or are reported?

DiamondGoldandSilver · 18/12/2024 18:19

I hate it when his music is played on the radio- Virgin seem to be playing his music and I try to change the station when I can. I don’t know why they are doing it and wish they would stop!

You're wrong.

If I loved someone who I later found out was a paedo, I'd cut them out of my life completely and I'd want justice to be served. I certainly would not condone, support or enable them.

Paedophiles are scum.

HTH.

Completely missed my point 🙄

Make you point clearer instead of rolling your eyes.

Make you point clearer instead of rolling your eyes.

The point was obviously that an accused person is entitled to a fair trial before you decide they're guilty.

SirChenjins · 19/12/2024 15:14

He got a fair trial - he was found not guilty. That doesn't mean he's not guilty though (as per my previous post).

And Boy George.

Re that escort he chained up or other stuff?

LunaNorth · 19/12/2024 15:26

Swallow the meat and spit out the bones. Otherwise you’d never watch/listen to/read anything.

Or don’t. It’s personal choice really.
