Hairdressers! Should I wash my hair pre-appt?

CowgirlJ · 12/12/2024 22:41

I have an appt tomorrow. Mid-length hair was washed Tues, scraped back in a pony Weds, and then styled and hairsprayed heavily today - looked ok, I hope!

Due at hairdressers tomorrow for a half head of foils - both dark and bleach. Should I wash it prior to appt or just leave it?

A quick was in the shower first thing, you will feel better arriving with clean hair.

comewhinewith · 12/12/2024 23:47

Don't they wash your hair at your appointment?

Colour is applied to dry hair. If you arrive with dirty hair covered in products, that acts as a barrier and the colour/bleach might take unevenly. The hair is washed when the colour is taken off.

I don't understand? Don't people wash their hair when they have their morning shower?.
I hate that feeling when I've not been able to wash my hair every day ( if I'm ill or something).

Emonade · 12/12/2024 23:51

Never wash your hair before a colour! Hairdressers hate it cos the foils just fall our, mine went mad the last time I did and said even if it's full of product don't wash it. They wash it after anyway

My hair doesn’t need washing every day. Twice a week is plenty for my hair.

CowgirlJ · 12/12/2024 23:53

Thanks all. My thinking was that it's not disgustingly dirty (although not freshly washed, ovbs) and that 'dirty' hair is easier to work with than just-washwd, damp hair, especially if applying colour?

If I'm being a minger though, I'm prepared to be told! Hairdressers - what do you prefer? A bit rough, or clean and damp!

Definitely wash, for reasons already stated.

I have fine, curly hair and wash it twice a week; any more than that and it's frizz city. I don't brush it between washes either.

This is what I've heard! No idea if it's true

My (ex)friend who was a hairdresser said
colour works better on hair washed the day or two before without product in it.

too clean or too dirty hair and product all make it difficult to achieve best colour results.

maltravers · 13/12/2024 00:05

I’ve been told by my hairdresser not to have clean hair before highlights are put in. So it’s usually on Day 2 (occasionally I risk the wrath and it’s clean).

mondaytosunday · 13/12/2024 00:08

Yea I thought colour was better on not washed hair. I home dye mine and it it gets washed as part of the process. If you use a lot of product that's different. But Tuesday wash? Mine would still look ok tomorrow.

wwyd2021medicine · 13/12/2024 00:09

My hairdresser doesn't like it freshly washed so if I washed it on Tuesday that would be fine for Thursday.
It may depend on hair type but freshly washed, mine is soft and silky and harder to do foils

@Moier
not everyone is like you or has the same type of hair.

GeneralWaste · 13/12/2024 00:19

Don't wash! I had mine highlighted today and she said my hair was too clean (washed it Tues). The foils are easier to do on unwashed hair.

Of course you should wash it, it must be minging by now if it's not been washed since Tuesday!

My hairdresser told me not wash it for a few days before colour. Your hair sounds fine, but if you’re still unsure, give her a call in the morning.

WhippetsRule · 13/12/2024 00:35

TotallyTwisted

How rude! Not everyone needs to wash their hair daily. Mine only needs it every 3 days, I don't use product or have oily hair.

HawkersSouth · 13/12/2024 02:19

My hairdresser said freshly washed hair was better for color, takes to your hair better.
