Hairdressers! Should I wash my hair pre-appt?

CowgirlJ · 12/12/2024 22:41

I have an appt tomorrow. Mid-length hair was washed Tues, scraped back in a pony Weds, and then styled and hairsprayed heavily today - looked ok, I hope!

Due at hairdressers tomorrow for a half head of foils - both dark and bleach. Should I wash it prior to appt or just leave it?

I am having mine done tomorrow also . I washed it today but I have curly hair it gets washed about every 5 days .

As for pp it definitely wouldn’t cope with been washed daily . It is thick long curly hair takes a lifetime to dry would never wash it in the morning before work

I don't understand? Don't people wash their hair when they have their morning shower?.
I hate that feeling when I've not been able to wash my hair every day ( if I'm ill or something).

Ha! Mine takes a full hour to dry properly with a hairdryer. No I do not wash it daily. Twice a week at most.

Not everyone. I have curly/wavy hair, it only needs washing once a week and I can assure you it isn't dirty. I don't use any product on it (other than shampoo and conditioner of course). People have different types of hair, yours might need a daily wash, other people's doesn't.

I wash mine every day too but I think you're definitely in the minority if you do. I do it every morning but don't usually bother for hairdresser appointment. But then it's not days old dirt

AllTheChaos · 13/12/2024 03:13

If I washed my hair every day it would be breaking off in my hands, and my scalp would be bleeding!

peri24 · 13/12/2024 03:24

The don’t understand stuff is so stupid. I used to religiously wash mine every day but I still understood not everyone did.

I now only need to wash it twice a week. The more you wash your hair the more it needs washing.

TwinklyNight · 13/12/2024 03:33

I think that they will wash it before if they think it needs it, but you could call them and ask.

TotallyTwisted · 13/12/2024 00:27

Of course you should wash it, it must be minging by now if it's not been washed since Tuesday!

Oh dear, you just outed yourself as someone with limp, greasy hair.

You "don't understand" that people might have different hair to you? Really?

mrspresents · 13/12/2024 04:59

I was my hair twice a week and go to have foils done on a Saturday when I washed it Thursday. However you say you have hairspray on (heavily) so I'd wash it to get that out.

Firstshoes · 13/12/2024 05:16

I've been having highlights for years. I always wash my hair the night before. My highlights have always been perfect. Don't think it's pleasant for hairdresser to work with dirty producty hair

Your hair must be greasy or you are using the wrong shampoo.

Mine is curly and it only needs a wash every 4 days. It takes 8 hours to fully dry

MsXmasGGMasterTwat · 13/12/2024 06:03

👋I wash my hair once a week. I'd only wash it today in the OP's shoes if I thought that the products might be an issue with the colouring.

treewoe · 13/12/2024 06:08

Worked in haircare for over 10 years, but not a hairdresser. Was told that hairdressers like day old hair (hasn't been washed for 24 hours). Hopefully an actual hairdresser will be along to tell us the answer.

Unless cropped or extremely uncomplicated to dry (eg looks ok even natural air dry) who has extra 30+ mins to faff around washing, conditioning and drying their hair every day???

Wash my hair once or twice a week, a bit of dry shampoo to help it look presentable on days 4+. Your scalp stops producing so much grease / serum once you reduce washing frequency. My hair goes fluffy if not 100% dry before going out, I looked worse when I washed it daily!

Shower caps were invented for a reason 😂

HoppingPavlova · 13/12/2024 06:20

Seems all over the place. All hairdressers I have had in my life except one have said not to come with freshly washed hair as colour takes better with hair not washed for a while. However, one hairdresser went apoplectic when I turned up like that and washed my hair before applying colour and kept inferring I was minging! So …… Current hairdresser has instructed I don’t wash my hair for a week before colour. Just seems even the hairdressers have no consensus so how would we know.

Onlyvisiting · 13/12/2024 06:30

I'd wash it today. Don't put any product in it after. Will be dry but fresh tomorrow

I think it’s pretty unusual to wash hair every day, although I’m aware some people need to if their hair is particularly thin and greasy. My hair is the opposite - long, thick and dry and would be awful if I washed it every day. Not to mention time consuming as it takes ages to dry. Every 3 days seems to be the sweet spot for me but I know people who go longer.

MullersCorner · 13/12/2024 06:33

I only ‘need’ to wash mine every 4 or 5 days or so, sometimes having very dry skin is a godsend.

My hairdresser prefers for no product to be in the hair when colouring; no hairspray, dry shampoo, serums etc. If I’ve applied product to my hair the day before my appointment, I tend to just rinse with water the night before.

I’ve asked her about this before, and she doesn’t like colouring freshly washed hair (within the last 12-24 hours), but everybody’s hair is different.

Take a shot every time I use the word “before”.

stayathomer · 13/12/2024 06:36

Not a hairdresser but torn- they don’t want you to wash your hair before a colour but Irma you had that much hairspray in that does sound like it needs to be washed out!

namechangeGOT · 13/12/2024 06:37

@Moier If you want to come round to my house every morning at 5am to blow dry and style my very long, very thick bonce then be my guest!

WolfFoxHare · 13/12/2024 06:41

CowgirlJ · 12/12/2024 23:53

Thanks all. My thinking was that it's not disgustingly dirty (although not freshly washed, ovbs) and that 'dirty' hair is easier to work with than just-washwd, damp hair, especially if applying colour?

If I'm being a minger though, I'm prepared to be told! Hairdressers - what do you prefer? A bit rough, or clean and damp!

My hairdresser says she prefers me dirty. She says it’s easy to work with! I do normally wash it every day though, so it’s only 24 hours of grease at the most.

Emonade · 12/12/2024 23:51

Never wash your hair before a colour! Hairdressers hate it cos the foils just fall our, mine went mad the last time I did and said even if it's full of product don't wash it. They wash it after anyway

My hairdresser is the same, she gets a bit cross if I say I've washed it but from experience, I find if I don't, it takes ages for the colour to take effect. Sometimes, I've found it hasn't really coloured that well and I've left with it not much different. I'm actually going today and will definitely be washing it first!!

missmarplesapprentice · 13/12/2024 06:46

Don’t wash!!!!
I also have foils and my hairdresser always prefers it if it isn’t washed. She would rather have my 5 day unwashed hair any day over freshly washed as it makes it easier to foil. I do shower every day…just to be clear, I just don’t do my hair.
i went from everyday to twice a week during covid and my hair is so much healthier for it.

Christ no. And I don't have a shower every day anyway unless it's warm weather. If I washed my hair every day it would look like a cloud.

I would wash it the day before a colour but not a cut & blow dry.
