What age do you stop giving nieces/nephews money for Christmas

If you do stop obviously! So my niece is now 19 and working. In my family the cut off for giving money/presents was 18 years old, DH says 21.
Does everyone stop at that age or carry on?
Happy to carry on, just wondered what others did. (We don't do adult Christmas presents)

We've stopped at 18 but do buy a 21st birthday gift.
My sil seemed a bit out we weren't buying this year for her 22 year old but we haven't for years!

Washywishy · 11/12/2024 15:14

Thank you. Yes my sister in law asked for money for her when I was enquiring about her siblings!

I can’t imagine ever stopping!

18, but it was all discussed in advance (I think eldest was 16 at the time).
Bigger present for 18th and that was the last one.

cstaff · 11/12/2024 17:07

It is 21 in my family. The last present they will get is probably money for their 21st birthday.

OnlyWhenILaugh · 11/12/2024 17:13

We stopped at 18.

newwithouttags · 11/12/2024 17:14

So funny, I was literally having this conversation with my DH

MerelyPlaying · 11/12/2024 17:14
  1. I make an exception for two nieces that I’m very close to and that I will actually see at Christmas. All the others are now adult, and probably earning more than me!
Dearg · 11/12/2024 17:17

My family stopped when they were about 25 ; we discussed it amongst the siblings and decided that was a reasonable number as by that age they are at work etc.

DH’s family - we stopped for one sibling’s dc at 18, at their suggestion, as they don’t live nearby. SIL still expects we send a gift to hers for our 40 year old niece. Not happening.

AnyoneSomeone · 11/12/2024 17:17

I never stopped.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 11/12/2024 17:17

I’m 58 and in a fairly well paid job. My lovely uncle still gives me £20 in my birthday card plus a box of Black Magic and £20 in my Christmas card. I keep it separate and always treat myself to something and tell him what I have bought. It means a lot to me (and I treat him in return too; usually half a case of wine).

MyStylish40s · 11/12/2024 17:18

I’m planning on stopping at 18.

Wishingplenty · 11/12/2024 17:18

I will stopping as of now. Both are 24 and 28 and are very entitled and spoiled. I have given them cute baby cousins that they failed to acknowledge. They both earn well with their degrees and still live at home and pay no rent. Time for me to bail out now!

Wendolino · 11/12/2024 17:22

21 for DH's sister's kids, but I still get them chocolates or biscuits. It was SIL's idea to stop.
I'm still giving to my brother's two, even though they're mid 20s, because they're the most lovely nephews you could ever wish for and we're very close.

PureBoggin · 11/12/2024 17:22

18...thankfully. We have 9 on my side and 11 on my husband's. That was £600ish on nieces and nephews every Christmas. They have started having babies so we had to establish an age limit or it would have been completely unmanageable.

Wendolino · 11/12/2024 17:23

@LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood how lovely that you have such a nice relationship

Auntieoftheyear · 11/12/2024 17:24

We just got a Christmas card with money in from my DH's aunt and uncle and we are married and in our mid-thirties 😁 but we are very close to them

Papyrophile · 11/12/2024 17:30

We stopped when they were out of education and working full time, so it has varied. Now we have family Secret Santa instead, so only one present to buy.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 11/12/2024 17:37

I'm over 50 and my aunt still sends me a little gift every year! I hope she doesn't read this thread.

orangewasp · 11/12/2024 17:43

18 but once they have children (great nephews and nieces) we buy for them

thiswaypleasethankyou · 11/12/2024 17:47

I stopped at the age they became old enough to thank me themselves for the money I sent (they live far away) but didn't, even though I have them both on social media and they use it regularly. Would have been about 14ish.

QueSyrahSyrah · 11/12/2024 17:57

Our nieces have been told it's either stop at 18, or they can join the present giving in addition to receiving at that point. Up to them.

We do adult presents so otherwise are in danger of two adults in the family who continue to receive gifts but never have to buy gifts in return.

PermanentTemporary · 11/12/2024 17:59

21 if they do something to thank me (a text is fine). 18 if there's radio silence.

Girlwithapple · 11/12/2024 18:02

18 but I do a 21st gift as well. I'm the only one of my siblings without kids so it all adds up for me.

Motheranddaughter · 11/12/2024 18:16

Still gift for mine in late 20s
Will probably stop/ cut back if z/when they have their own DC
