What a busy platform. So much visual noise and not clear logic of how the different groups subgroups work or user-friendly way to engage. I hate all the silly avatars and can't get my head around the rewards system... what's all this about??? Who needs it???

I posted a couple of times but no one replied (popular topic discussed extensively) except a bot with a page full of forum guidelines and couple of adds. I went onto Reddit to reach out to a wider audience but seem to be wondering around the edges looking for the gate in.

Yes I can't bear it! I feel as though 1 million threads have been thrown at the site and I can't work out where they all are.

TreeAttack · 11/12/2024 00:43

It’s one of my most used websites, huge fan I especially enjoy no matter how obscure a show you’re watching or thing you’re interested in, there is probably a sub for it.

coxesorangepippin · 11/12/2024 01:35

Same here

MN is old school and clunky, and we like it like that

(hoiks bosom)

pizzapizzadaddio · 11/12/2024 01:43

I love reddit for my more niche interests. But I’m it often feels like I’m just talking to about a bazillion young American men (with the same view on just about everything)

HollyKnight · 11/12/2024 01:43

I dont mind Reddit. I preferred it before the latest update though. Still haven't figured out how to "watch" threads after the update. The notifications don't work right.

MN has gone weird on me recently. Used to be able to open my "watched" threads and have it open at the start of the new posts, but for some reason now it starts at the start of the thread and I have to scroll to find where I'd last read to. It's really putting me off tbh. If there are more than 8 new posts I dont bother.

IAm16StoneHalloween2024 · 11/12/2024 01:46

I love Reddit and find my way around it quite well. Can you be more specific with what the issue is? What would you like to read or engage with?

Happyinarcon · 11/12/2024 01:59

I don’t know how many replies on Reddit are real anymore. A lot of the subreddits I used to visit now sound very generic and dull making me think they’re mainly AI

iggleoggle · 11/12/2024 03:52

ah, choices… get lost in the Reddit maze. Or have mumsnet crash my browser time after time…

qwertasdfg · 11/12/2024 06:08

Reddit is great. So many unusual subs. Ultralight backpacking? We got you. Then of course, other discussions are filled with bots. Like here on the political topics. As if real humans were debating the Middle East or elections. People are arguing with a phone in a bot farm and not even realising it. It is actually hilarious to watch.

I love some of the science subs on Reddit, or the "what is this thing", "help me find".

You can't really compare Reddit and MN. Both are online forums. That is where the similarity starts and ends. The audience, the topics are different. I hardly ever read very intelligent replies on MN, sorry. On Reddit, you have experts on the weirdest thing. I learn stuff there. Here, not so much. It is more chit chat. Lots of fake stuff on both.

CheeseTime · 11/12/2024 06:19

I love Reddit even though a lot of the threads literally make no sense to me. I just open it and get a bit lost but there are some fascinating subs on there. I haven’t ever subscribed so just get whatever is thrown at me.
I do think a lot of it is bots. Hate that the OP responses are not clear in a thread.

RedRiverShore5 · 11/12/2024 06:32

I tend to just go through google but only really use it for reviews/opinions of things I might own or buy, if I have a problem with something like for example my phone and TV and films chat rather than just general chatty stuff, I have never posted or registered on there

AwakeNotThruChoice · 11/12/2024 06:35

@chazamilami was that the first time you posted?
it maybe that on that Sub you get an auto Bot reply the first time.

chazamilami · 11/12/2024 21:58

@AwakeNotThruChoice I posted two days ago and just checked again - no one responded to me. As I said, it's was a popular topic related to financial matters, nothing too niche or too exotic. Honestly, how this platform works???

OP posts:
chazamilami · 11/12/2024 22:02

I don't even care if I get a reply, but it just demonstrated to me how mysterious the system is. It kind of looks easy, but I think there a trick there which I'm not getting.

Also, they can really do with stripping off 50% of the buttons on there as it creates so much clutter.

Hard work for me. Thanks Mumsnet for keeping down to earth.

This place gets dafter by the minute

PiggyPigalle · 11/12/2024 22:05

Only use it for Ukraine war.

Hate all the American swearing and one upmanship on jokes, so reading less and less.
Also the karma nonsense. One guy disagreed with a comment and another said to ignore him as he has low karma. It was 600 or something, they are pathetic.

Roastiesarethebestbit · 11/12/2024 22:06

I didn’t get Reddit at all when I first joined, too different to here. But now I much prefer how it works. I’ve never started a thread there, but I when I post on threads people actually reply! You can even have a back and forth conversation! Here I am just speaking over a load of other people and I don’t feel like I ever get heard really.

'Karma' 😂😂 so daft

If you are willing to share the post I can check it? I understand if you’d rather not obviously.

Every ‘sub’ is run by different people and they all have their own rules. So, imagine if ‘AIBU’ is run by Greg and Mohamed and has a rule that you have to have registered your account and verified your email.

And ‘chat’ is run by Sarah and Tom who say if you want to start a comment you must put one comment under the post.

And ‘TV’ is run by Tony who has gone awol and the sub is a mess.

And ‘gardening’ is run by a bunch of control freaks so not much gets posted there as they reject every post.

Some subs require you to have karma, others require you to have joined for a certain number of weeks ago.

Like the ‘sex’ section here, I think you have to be signed up for about 2 weeks.

If you don’t follow these rules your post will be automatically deleted and no one will see it.

BloodandGlitter · 11/12/2024 23:13

Try using Reddit Enhancement suite, it makes the site so much better, you can hide subreddits and users. Also www.old.reddit.com makes for better browsing than using www.reddit.com

chazamilami · 11/12/2024 23:57

@IAm16StoneHalloween2024 wow! How did you work out all of this? Where all this 'manual' is written? That's also explain why Reddit is a mess - too many cooks!!! No coherent rules, structure, no consistency.

I don't know how to share the post but if you go to r/personalfinance is the one with questions on SIPP. Still no one replied. Must be Tony's watch again.

chazamilami · 12/12/2024 00:03

@BloodandGlitter Hmm, so I can't even figure out the basic Reddit and you recommend me to move on the enhanced version?

OP posts:
TreeAttack · 12/12/2024 00:04

For me that’s what makes Reddit so great, the ability for individual groups to spin up a sub on their interest and not have to be the same rules etc as all the others.

for your sipp one it just probably hasn’t been seen, that’s a huge sub, maybe ask again on a uk one or a smaller finance sub. It’s the same as mumsnet often threads don’t get answered

If you had questions on SIPP, which is a UK finance thing, then you’d want r/UKPersonalFinance instead - you probably got no response because the users in r/personalfinance are mostly US.
