Things of today's youth that you don't understand

What in the name of feck is skibidi?

What's with the 'V' peace (?) signs across your face in EVERY photo?

Why is calling something 'sick' a good thing?!

Please enlighten me oh wise ones of MN.
I'm sure we weren't such an enigma to our parents 😆

What the sigma? A favourite saying of today's make youth.
Why?

MJconfessions · 08/12/2024 06:49

To be fair 2 out of the 3 things you mentioned have been around for decades, don’t think that’s down to today’s youth

BraveBlueDuck · 08/12/2024 06:53

Calling everything "Goat" (Greatest of all time)

I used to think early 2000s slang was difficult, what they use today is just ridiculous

BilboBlaggin · 08/12/2024 06:56

Definitely the language. My DD doesn't use the words Very or Really, she'll say eg something is bare nice (or bear? Not sure even how she's spelling it)

That and the whole dating stages nowadays. Texting, talking to, seeing, dating, going exclusive, insta official etc. no idea if they're all right, or in the correct order, but you get my gist.

Again, this has been around for decades. I remember people saying this about music in the 2000s so your comparison is off.

I love it-it makes me feel as though I’ve truly stepped into the next phase in life. Rizz, skibbidy, Ohio…so many phrases and words seemed to pop out of nowhere but be used simultaneously by all my children’s peers.

The one thing I don’t understand is why so many cover their mouths for photos but I wonder (and worry) if the reason for the face covering poses is based in insecurities.

I have to say I think the dating thing really helps to ensure both parties are on the same page and that they have a proper conversation and don't just assume, it's actually very respectful.

FanofLeaves · 08/12/2024 07:04

Coats. Big puffa jackets worn even when it’s hot out and they don’t take them off!

I don’t think “bare” is a youth thing, perhaps more location based. Might be more popular in cities? Using “bare” has been around for a while, I remember people using that when I was at school. It’s popular with chavvy wannabe gangster types or in places where that kind of persona is seen as desirable and cool…

Older people use it too, I’d say it’s more popular amongst people 30+ who were likely saying that at school and haven’t grown out of it.

NormaJoan · 08/12/2024 07:17

Flesh coloured leggings, I always have to do a double take

BraveBlueDuck · 08/12/2024 07:18

I bet you're fun at parties.

The thread wasn't titled "Things of @MJconfessions youth that you don't understand"

NorthernLiner · 08/12/2024 07:27

I guess some of it may be regional, because the things I listed in the OP are new - to me.

Or maybe I'm just an old fuddy duddy 🤷‍♀️

It does seem that exclaimations such as 'jolly hockey sticks', 'Bob's your uncle','tickety-boo', 'chin-wag' and 'Oh I say!' (which is the 'old-fashioned' O.M.G.) have gone for good. They probably just take too long to type, I suppose.

HelloCanYouHearMe · 08/12/2024 07:50

Definately the language: Sussybacca, rizz, mewing... the list goes on...

DS and DSD sang a version of Last Christmas the other day and I didnt understand a bloody word of it

The only new one to me is skibidi which apparently means cool, bad or dumb 🤷‍♀️

BlackJacktheDog · 08/12/2024 08:05

Always reminds me of the Simpson's quote. "I used to be with It, but then they changed what It was and now what I'm with, isn't It, and what's It seems strange and scary to me" Grin

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 08:08

The fact they all want to look identical.

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 08:09

Skibidi toilet can fuck off back to the toilet.

BigDahliaFan · 08/12/2024 08:17

They all looked identical 10 years ago...but also we all looked the same in the 80s too tBF.

Flesh coloured leggings with short tops is weird.

JengaJungle · 08/12/2024 08:18

Omg I thought my ds had just made up the word skibidi! I don't even know what the fuck it means!

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 08:22

@BigDahliaFan as a Londoner we followed trends but there were lots of them & individuality was prized now dc have the exact same outfits/colours on.

I have school photos showing, even in uniform, we all looked different - only a couple of girls with long straight hair, girls with short hair, medium hair, curly, wavy, dyed, permed 😂, short skirts, longer skirts, trousers, heels, fat ties, thin ties. Casual photos show huge differences in dress. I would have been mortified if someone was wearing a identical coat or carrying the same school bag.

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 08:48

Just asked Dc about sigma! Apparently it’s a highly attractive male! Wtf.

they do a hand sign for mewing, like a finger along the jawline.

Radishknot · 08/12/2024 08:48

@Gorgonemilezola exactly, I fell out with my bf because she bought the same trainers in another colourway 😆.

I've got the opposite problem!. Grandchildren who refuse to wear them. Even when they are freezing.
