I am slightly going to side with Derxa here, calling farmers a bunch of entitled twats is a bit sweeping. There will be some that are entitled twats, but not all.

The change to IHT is a big one and Labour should have been upfront about it in the manifesto. They still would have won the election and would have had a cast iron mandate for the change.

Thanks. People are hell bent on mixing up ordinary farmers with people like James Dyson.
The NFU was at Westminster yesterday and was reduced to tears explaining the situation that some farmers find themselves in.

None of you understand the situation. Starmer and the DEFRA basically lied to farmers before the election. It was a shock. As I said yesterday I was at my cousins funeral. The amount of good that woman did for the community was immense.

lots of people do good for society!! not sure why you think 1 particular person is special for that.

Shall I list out the voluntary hours I do every year on top of my full time job that I pay tax on and my investments that I pay tax on - as paying tax is probably more good for society than anything else.

BestIsWest · 12/12/2024 11:18

Try explaining it in a less emotional, defensive and aggressive way and we might try. As I've said before, the likes of millionaires playing at farming like Clarkson bleating about IHT did your industry a massive disservice and lost a lot of sympathy.

I'm very sorry for your loss, I'm sure your cousin contributed a huge amount but farmers don't have a monopoly on community service.

BBC Farming Today reports that the Office for Environmental Protection believes Defra may have broken environmental laws in 2023/2024… …by allowing neonicotinoid pesticides known to be harmful to bees & insects.

The last govt gave emergency authorisation for use on sugar beet for last 4 years.

I don’t think it’s fair to say nobody else understands. We have a different perspective, that’s all.
Nobody has said farmers are worthless or do nothing for the community (I agree the sweeping ‘entitled twats’ was a bit strong, but many are coming across like that) so I’m not sure why you keep telling us that. I’m a retired teacher. Ii did a shit load of good in my job and more on top, my tax is PAYE and I had to pay thousands in Capital Gains Tax because the pandemic held up a sale and in the meantime house prices rose. I didn’t complain (much) although it affected the lump sum I was relying on to fund the early retirement I needed due to the toll on my mental health of various toxic schools.
Condolences on your cousin, I’m sure she was a lovely woman. That’s not relevant to whether it’s wise for protesting farmers to block emergency vehicles though, is it?

Lots of people do good for the community. The proportion who are farmers is probably similar to any other occupation. Anybody, whatever their occupation, who disrupts emergency services is a twat.

That doesn't surprise me. From tomorrow there will be a whole new load of sticky and potentially expensive red tape involved in sending anything into the EU and NI that will be prohibitive for many small businesses.

Careful, you'll raise the corpse of big data. We never quite put the stake through the heart.

DuncinToffee · 12/12/2024 12:39

Ha, I was reading some bits of Badenoch's Spectator interview in which she said LA had dark undertones and she preferred DH and found this more interesting data in the comments Xmas Wink

Love Actually features a PM standing up to a bullying sexually aggressive US President doesn't it?

The best Christmas film is Arthur Christmas.

This is a huge problem for me. I sell 'new old stock' parts for classic cars. The companies that produced these goods no longer exist and it is impossible for me to fulfil these requirements. I suspect it means that I can no longer send anything to the EU which was a major market for me.

Zonder · 12/12/2024 13:51

Alexandra2001 · 12/12/2024 10:49

Doesn't matter, its causing huge issues for people leading up to xmas, not least reduced trade for London shops and businesses.

But as usual, Farmers get and do whatever they want, a bunch of entitled twats.

Pay their taxes, they ve an excellent deal, 20% and 10 years to pay.... one guy yesterday pleading poverty on TV, turns out leased land to a solar company, netting him 10s of 1000s... omitted that little detail.

Dairy and sheep farmers are doing very very well indeed right now.

This. I can't bear all this tax dodging while giving their sob stories.

pointythings · 12/12/2024 13:52

I find it hard to empathise with anyone who blocks the emergency services. I am fully aware that not all farmers are Dysons, but they have been given more favourable terms than anyone paying IHT and they should acknowledge that. Demonstrate, fine. But don't be a twat, or you will rightly be depicted as just as bad as JSO.

And let's of people do good in the community. They do massively useful jobs and/or volunteer. I do. I am not special because of it.

SerendipityJane · 12/12/2024 13:57

I would have been a lot more sympathetic had the farmers driven to Clacton and reminded the world that Brexit was Farages brainchild and he still needs to own it. If it caused inconvenience to the subjects of Clacton then it might remind them who they voted for.

Sterling close to its highest value against the Euro since the Brexit referendum. Markets appear to be rewarding the prospect of long term British political stability. Not something you’ve been able to say for a while.
