I admire those of you who have the patience and resilience to listen to a speech of Trump's.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger. 😁

If you ignore the dangerous rhetoric it’s worth it just for a lesson in how not to speak publicly!

The biggliest most beautiful fascination…. It’s a beautiful fascination….a beautiful word. And did I mention that there’s going to be tariffs.

MissConductUS · 23/01/2025 19:44

The problem with Trump threatening Russia with tariffs is that the US buys almost nothing from Russia. On the other hand, if he can drive down the price of oil, that will truly hurt Russia.

I’ve seen people basically saying he can’t drive down the price of oil and it’s empty threats. I’ll confess to not understanding it well enough to know.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 23/01/2025 19:49

Much of the oil America uses is imported from Canada, so they could dump all the American oil they don't need and don't have the refineries for onto the global market, I suppose.

Hegseth is losing republican support, @MissConductUS any thoughts on whether he’s likely to be confirmed?

It's too close to call, but I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't. It's possible that Trump offered him as a sacrificial lamb, knowing he probably wouldn't get confirmed.

Re the oil price, he'd have to convince the Saudis to drop the price to have an effect on the global market.

US President Donald Trump stated he wanted to meet with Putin β€œimmediately,” Reuters reports.

The report states that the missile will be equipped with a homing head, enabling it to target and sink moving ships and other naval targets.

Barbados and Panama to Deflag Over 100 Russian Shadow Fleet Tankers β€” Bloomberg
The Barbados Ship Registry announced plans to deflag 46 ships by the end of the month due to U.K. sanctions, with 14 of these vessels also affected by U.S. sanctions. Similarly, Panama has begun deregistering 68 vessels hit by U.S. sanctions under a law passed late last year to align with U.S., EU, U.K., and UN sanctions.
Although these ships are likely to find new flags, many tankers serving Russia’s interests have had to repeatedly switch to less conventional registries since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This highlights the growing impact of sanctions on the logistics that support Russia’s oil exports and military operations.
The Barbados flag, previously a notable success for Russian shipping due to its global reputation, is being revoked in line with U.K. rules, despite Barbados not having direct sanctions against Russia. Giovanni Cinillo, CEO of the Barbados Maritime Register, emphasized that Barbados aligns with U.K. regulations due to strong bilateral relations.
According to Equasis, some of the affected Barbadian vessels have already re-registered under flags from countries like Tanzania and Sao Tome and Principe. Panama, meanwhile, continues to enforce sanctions through its registry changes, further isolating Russia’s shadow fleet.

πŸ›’ Oil prices began to drop following Trump’s statement about seeking a reduction in oil prices from Saudi Arabia and OPEC, aiming to pressure Russia over Ukraine.

The price of Brent oil fell below $78 per barrel for the first time since January 10.

A Warehouse in the Moscow Region Caught Fire, Covering 10,000 Square Meters β€” Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM)

❗️Ukraine is finalizing reforms to attract young people aged 18–25 to the Armed Forces.
This was reported (apnews.com/article/ukraine-war-russia-mobilization-a2ae7c4df296a5cf5c2d0e047833756e) by the Associated Press, citing Colonel Pavlo Palisa, appointed to the Office of the President.
Key points from Palisa:
πŸ”΄Lowering the draft age to 25 did not yield the expected increase in Armed Forces recruits;
πŸ”΄The new plan includes financial incentives, social guarantees, and opportunities for education to motivate young people;
πŸ”΄The mandatory conscription system hinders the army’s modernization, prompting the country to seek new approaches to compensate for losses;

Meanwhile, drones are attacking an oil depot in Ryazan, Russia.
In Bryansk, there was also a strike on the β€œKremniy” plant

β€œNo country has ever won a war on defense.” Commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, gave an interview to the β€œBaza” project. Here are the main points:
πŸ”΄The hardest moment in the defense of Kyiv was the battle for Moshchun. Russia deployed experienced troops and a lot of equipment there. Ukraine destroyed the crossings over the Irpin River, and the worst-case scenario was avoided.
πŸ”΄The AFU didn’t let Russian forces β€œescape” from Kharkiv region. They took advantage of the moment when Ukrainian forces were regrouping and recovering after losses (there were significant losses of equipment).
πŸ”΄The hardest days of the full-scale war were the battles for Lysychansk. The Russians advanced in columns, breaking through the defense. The 54th Brigade played a special role in these battles, stabilizing the front.
πŸ”΄Censorship during war is necessary. When the enemy doesn’t know the plans, the chances of success are higher.

Donald Trump spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Here are the key points:
πŸ”΄Trump will ask Saudi Arabia and OPEC to lower oil prices. He believes this could help end the war in Ukraine.
πŸ”΄Trump plans to work on achieving a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. He emphasized the importance of peace, citing the loss of β€œmillions of soldiers.”
πŸ”΄NATO countries should allocate 5% of their GDP to defense, according to Trump. He noted that not all member countries are meeting this requirement.
πŸ”΄Trump aims to lower taxes in the U.S. to the world’s lowest level, aiming to attract investments from foreign businesses.

Does anyone know the significance of the key rate?

Ukraine's is now at 14.5% and Russia's is at 21% (Officially; Russian figures are heavily massaged; we don't know how massaged the Ukrainian figures are, if they are. In Russia there are unofficial reports of inflation being up to 30%). Apparently a healthy inflation rate is about 2%, but I'm not sure what the difference is between a key rate and an inflation rate.

It's the rate that central banks charge to lend money to banks in that country. It's a floor for all other interest rates. It's called the Federal funds rate here in the US. When the key rate goes up, banks raise the interest rates they charge for mortgages, automobile loans and leases, credit card balances, etc., because their cost to borrow from the government has increased.

It's done to suppress inflation, and it works by reducing the demand for goods. Fewer people can afford to buy goods on credit, and businesses postpone things like factory expansions or buying new computers or other equipment. So, the prices for those goods stabilize or drop because of decreased demand. But it's painful, and it puts people out of work as the demand for goods and services decreases. As people lose income, they spend less, which also decreases the demand for goods.

Does that put it in context? I'm happy to explain further if that's not clear or to the point you had in mind.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 24/01/2025 18:18

That was exactly it, and thank you. Best bookmark that so I don't forget!

So Ukraine's is much too high, but Russia's is even higher ...

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 24/01/2025 18:20

Dare I ask...what do people think will now happen in Ukraine now Trump is on office? Do you think Putin will take him seriously?

PerkingFaintly · 24/01/2025 19:34

There's not the smallest chance that Putin would treat Trump's opinion with more respect than anyone else treats Trump's opinion. In fact Vlad'll have much less respect, given he's had the narcissistic toddler on a rein (though a long one) for years.

However that doesn't mean the toddler can't smash bits of porcelain. Vlad knows this, as does everyone else.

So it's not impossible the toddler's thrashing around could – either by accident or by other people's design – be helpful to Ukraine.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 25/01/2025 00:03

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko stated that a critical condition for ending the Russian war against Ukraine is the revocation of NATO's 2008 Bucharest summit pledge to admit Ukraine into the Alliance.

EU sanctions against Russia will be extended only if Ukraine resumes the transit of Russian gas to Europe, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor OrbΓ‘n stated.

North Korea is likely accelerating preparations for the additional deployment of its troops to Russia, according to Yonhap News. The JCS also believes that North Korea is preparing for new provocations, including potential ballistic missile tests in the region.

Saudi Arabia is prepared to meet the rising global demand for oil, with a focus on market stability, Saudi Economy Minister Faisal Alibrahim stated, as reported by Reuters.

❗️The Kremlin has launched a disinformation campaign ahead of the upcoming Bundestag elections, according to investigative reports by CORRECTIV.
Over a hundred news websites have been identified as disseminating false information about German politicians, with links traced back to Evgeny Prigozhin’s troll factory and the GRU. This investigation was carried out in collaboration with the disinformation monitoring group NewsGuard.
The campaign targets high-profile figures such as German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Green Party chancellor candidate Robert Habeck.
The group behind these operations, known as Storm-1516, is connected to Prigozhin’s troll factory, the GRU, and John Mark Dugan, a former U.S. police officer who received asylum in Russia. Dugan has also been linked to spreading fake news about U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Some German websites spreading pro-Russian misinformation have been taken offline, while others are not directly publishing fake news but are amplifying narratives from right-wing media outlets. Journalists warn this activity may only represent the β€œinitial stage” of a broader disinformation effort expected to escalate as the February 2025 elections approach.

CDU leader and German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz emphasized Ukraine's victory as a priority in the fight against the "axis of autocracies" during a keynote speech in Berlin.

American sanctions targeting Russia's hydrocarbon exports have effectively derailed the Arctic LNG 2 project, as reported by gCaptain. The sanctions have disrupted plans for the project's third production line, with critical equipment returning to China instead of reaching its destination in Russia.
In March 2024, Chinese gas liquefaction equipment manufacturer Wison New Energies shipped two essential units to Russia for the Arctic LNG 2 project. However, ten months later, these units were unloaded at the Dongzao Gang port in northern Shanghai rather than the Novatek large-scale offshore construction center in Belokamyanka, Murmansk Region.
Data from transponders and satellite images revealed that the ship Wei Xiao Tian Shi, carrying the 12,000-ton rigs, initially set sail for Belokamyanka. However, the introduction of additional US sanctions in mid-2024 forced the vessel to change course off the UK coast in July, ultimately returning to China. For the past five months, the equipment has remained in Chinese waters.

Russia is introducing stricter penalties, including fines and imprisonment of up to 7 years, for disclosing information on the import of sanctioned goods, according to Reuters. ...The move is aimed at protecting the country's economy amid ongoing Western sanctions.
The legislation follows increased media reporting in 2023 about the methods Russia employs to import goods subject to Western restrictions. The government views these disclosures as potentially harmful to its economic stability and seeks to curb such leaks.

...... Despite financial and human losses, analysts assert that Russia has the resources to continue fighting. With the upper hand currently in its favor and no new U.S. aid package for Ukraine under consideration, Trump’s warnings of additional sanctions appear insufficient to compel Russia to revise its primary demands. [ ...]
The Kremlin views Trump’s statements as pre-negotiation posturing rather than substantive proposals. [...] . Some in Moscow have expressed cautious optimism about Trump’s presidency, believing he might eventually strike deals favorable to Russia while sidelining Ukraine, which Putin has labeled as β€œillegitimate.”

A recent study by the McKinsey Global Institute (MGI) reveals that in over half of the world's countries, where two-thirds of humanity resides, the birth rate has fallen below the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman.

Sub-Saharan Africa leads with the highest fertility rates, where 10 adult couples on average have 44 children. Most births occur in the poorest nations.
Europe also faces a significant fertility decline, with an average of 1.4 children per couple or 14 children per 10 couples. Although this is better than Ukraine's rate, it remains well below the threshold needed to prevent depopulation. The findings underscore a broader demographic challenge, with major economies potentially facing population collapse by 2100, while Ukraine is already experiencing severe demographic decline.
