Over a hundred news websites have been identified as disseminating false information about German politicians, with links traced back to Evgeny Prigozhin’s troll factory and the GRU. This investigation was carried out in collaboration with the disinformation monitoring group NewsGuard.
The campaign targets high-profile figures such as German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Green Party chancellor candidate Robert Habeck.
The group behind these operations, known as Storm-1516, is connected to Prigozhin’s troll factory, the GRU, and John Mark Dugan, a former U.S. police officer who received asylum in Russia. Dugan has also been linked to spreading fake news about U.S. presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
Some German websites spreading pro-Russian misinformation have been taken offline, while others are not directly publishing fake news but are amplifying narratives from right-wing media outlets.
