Excellent.

Biden is going to spend it all hopefully before Trump's inauguration on 20 January?

I don't think he can get all of that shipped to Ukraine in three weeks, and I don't think it will completely spend down the pot Congress authorized in April.

That said, I doubt Trump will pull the plug on it when he enters office. He'd be giving up all negotiating leverage with Russia if he did.

blueshoes · 30/12/2024 21:37

@MissConductUS I certainly hope Trump will be transactional sensible and see the wider implications of not supporting Ukraine. I cannot believe I just said that.

Well the Russians aren't being cooperative with him, so that is favourable to the Ukraine side in my view. Ultimately Ukraine (and its Western backers) needs to be able to hold the line (give or take) until the Russian economy collapses. I wish that sanctions were being applied more heavily - why has the reselling of Russian oil not been dealt with? We should be restricting the import of oil products from countries like Georgia who buy crude from Russia outside of the price cap.

@DdraigGoch although a desperate tragedy, the Azerbaijan Airlines crash is straining the relationship between Azerbaijan and Russia.

I believe Russian oil and gas exports through Azerbaijan and Azerbaijan may have rebranded Russian gas as Azerbaijan which aids sanctions evasion or allows Europe to not deal directly with Russia. Hopefully, there is less incentive for Azer to support these activities going forward.

Russia tested (www.ft.com/content/d345a6e7-2d72-4dcb-9c12-76d571ba75eb) Japan and South Korea’s air defense systems and had a list of targets for potential attacks, Financial Times reports, citing classified documents from 2013–2014
The tests were motivated by Russian military fears that its eastern borders would be vulnerable in a potential war with NATO or attacks by the U.S. and regional allies. These concerns make the documents still relevant today.
One such test, involving two Russian fighter jets, took place on February 24, 2014. In total, 39 aircraft were deployed to intercept enemy targets 18 times.
Russia’s target list for potential military actions against South Korea and Japan included 160 civilian and military infrastructure sites.
A Russian map is attached, illustrating the route of a bomber testing the air defense systems of its Asian neighbors. The map includes markings indicating where South Korean and Japanese fighter jets intercepted the bomber.
