What is it with [older] women putting their tongues out on photos?

This is slightly light-hearted.

I belong to a social (friendship) group and sometimes they post photos on social media of their events.

Lots of them stick their tongues out for the photo- these are women 40+ (not teenagers.)

I'm curious why this is now a 'thing'.

I’ve put my hand up to it. I am not ashamed or bothered it makes people think I’m…insert put down.
I’m in my 50’s and unashamedly having fun.
As previously mentioned, my youngest used to do it and my archaic brain was slow to catch on.
Try not to judge us for having fun. I may be classless and cringe but I’m finally happy in my skin ☺️
I can categorically tell you that I’ll start copying the latest trend in about 2 years when I’ll be even more cringe 😬

It's not the happiest example, but there is a photo in the news today of the young couple in Turkey (where the man was killed in a lift shaft) and she has her tongue out in the photo. He was 20 and I'm assuming she's about the same age. I can just about get that - but in your 50s?

I don't see how it shows you're 'having fun'. Genuinely I don't get it.
How does sticking your tongue out show you're 'happy in your skin' any more than grinning or smiling?

Each to their own. You genuinely don’t have to get it. Judge away 😊

You say you don't want to start an argument, but then here you are again with ageist crap. Why shouldn't somebody in their 50s do it if they want to, just like somebody in their 20s?

I think maybe they are still young and care what people may think.
Or maybe they are just very judgy naturally and like to look down their noses at old people doing silly things 🤷‍♀️
I don’t care, I’ll just start photobombing like you said 😂

It seems such a ridiculous thing to be condemning women over. The ageism and misogyny on here sometimes horrifies me.

All ‘isms’ are not equal. It’s life and sometimes you just have smile and stick your tongue out, preferably to the side 😋

I always assume it's actually a lack of confidence. I think it takes more confidence to smile or just be yourself in a photo. People who stick their tongue out or pull a face aren't confronted with their genuine appearance. Personally, I just avoid the camera but I do think it's often a way of slightly hiding.
