What is it with [older] women putting their tongues out on photos?

This is slightly light-hearted.

I belong to a social (friendship) group and sometimes they post photos on social media of their events.

Lots of them stick their tongues out for the photo- these are women 40+ (not teenagers.)

I'm curious why this is now a 'thing'.

OP posts:

Never noticed this, none of my friends do this and I've never done it, so I doubt it's a 'thing'. I hope not anyway.

Purreh · 01/12/2024 13:49

Sounds like they want to give out a ‘we’re so wild and crazy!’ vibe.

Itsmeagainunfortunately · 01/12/2024 13:49

I don't care what age group does it, or what sex for that matter, I find it gross and totally unappealing.

I'm curious why you think it is, just because some women you know do it?

I've certainly never seen anyone over the age of about 20 doing it.

Likewise. I'm in my 50s and this would just annoy me if my friends did this.

lightsandtunnels · 01/12/2024 13:53

Not a thing that I've noticed and I use SM a lot and am over 40. One of my friends on FB has her tongue out on her profile pic but she's late 20s so not sure it's just an older lady thing! If anything, it's the V sign (peace not f off) in pics with older ladies - I see this a lot!

WhitbyBee · 01/12/2024 13:59

To show that their teeth are all their own and in good nick? So letting a potential suitor know that there won't be unexpected costs?
A bit like checking a horses teeth before purchase?

CandyCane457 · 01/12/2024 14:03

I’m with you OP- I’ve seen it and I cringe!

Some of my friends mums (late 50s) do it on fb, as well as work colleagues (40s)… I definitely think it’s a thing!

spinspinspinthewheel · 01/12/2024 14:04

Yes I’ve seen this a lot on Facebook in my friends and extended networks. I’m 50 and these people are aged around 35-60

I get the feeling they want to portray an I’m so crazy aren’t I vibe. Loads of them are incapable of having a photo taken without doing a peace sign either. No idea what it’s all about. And often some kind of filter.

I am no better I always end up on photos with a fixed manic grin and my eyes are always closed.

HaddawayAndShite · 01/12/2024 14:04

Well what a rather sweeping statement. This one very small selection of "older" people doing something doesn't mean it's a "thing" now, it's just something that particular group of people do. Sounds like a cringe group though.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/12/2024 14:05

It's definitely a thing. Often peace sign and tongue stuck out. Younger women had been doing it for a while, but maybe it's caught on with some older people. It looks utterly idiotic.

SnoopySantaPaws · 01/12/2024 14:05

''Older'. 40's 😂😂😂😂😂

FKAT · 01/12/2024 14:06

I don't know anyone who does this. Mind you I'm not friends with anyone over 40 who posts pictures of themselves on social media. I find it a bizarre thing to do.

BlueHairnet · 01/12/2024 14:09

I think it's a way of getting the advantages of the "duckface" pout (cheek definition etc) without actually doing the duckface pout. A way of posing to look "good", but with more plausible deniability ("it's just that I'm so carefree and irreverent!").

Perimenoanti · 01/12/2024 14:09

I noticed this. Women who had kids relatively early and the kids are now grown, woman is early 40s and enjoys life. Goes on trip with girlfriends and they take a photo sticking their tongues out.

I want to say to them 'that was 20 years ago when teenagers did that, not today'.

museumum · 01/12/2024 14:13

I’m in my late 40s and didn’t grow up with photo taking at every night out. I still feel a bit silly “posing” for a picture. I haven’t tried doing a duck pout or sticking my tongue out but can see why they do - I just look stupidly wooden and awkward instead.

Presumably the OP meant older than the kind of age you might expect of people who stick their tongues out in photographs.

Mudflaps · 01/12/2024 14:15

My bil used to do this, every photo (and there are a lot) for years was of him with his tongue stuck out, seemed he spent most of his forties searching for a lolly, looked absolutely ridiculous but it stopped very quickly after he met his now partner, she put a stop to it almost instantly. He also stopped photographing every meal he had, every golf game, a smallest of details of every holiday and every facetime with his niece!! Safe to say his partner is liked within the family.

LizTruss · 01/12/2024 14:16

I understand that the Queen (QE2) used to do this - but then apparently she was a lizard, so quite normal really. 😜

TomatoSandwiches · 01/12/2024 14:20

Neither my friends nor family members do this... of any age tbh.

Dotto · 01/12/2024 14:20

Laughing at the idea of someone in their 40s being an older woman!!!!

Some people do it because they're insecure and hate how they look in pictures, so they make a comical or tongue out pose instead.

Also 'older' is meaningless without a reference point. Some posters refer to women in their 40s as older. They are youngsters to me.

PilatesPeach · 01/12/2024 14:23

I see it alot on SM along with the V peace sign index and middle fingers usually done together wtf and if the tongue is not out, often it is a pout or smooch lips.

SabreIsMyFave · 01/12/2024 14:24

Never seen a single woman over 21 do this. Except Miley Cyrus!

ReggaetonLente · 01/12/2024 14:25

I know what you mean OP I do see it too and I have a friend who always does it, I think it’s so unattractive! I’m a peace sign millennial over here though so maybe I don’t have room to talk!
