What is it with [older] women putting their tongues out on photos?

This is slightly light-hearted.

I belong to a social (friendship) group and sometimes they post photos on social media of their events.

Lots of them stick their tongues out for the photo- these are women 40+ (not teenagers.)

I'm curious why this is now a 'thing'.

My bil used to do this, every photo (and there are a lot) for years was of him with his tongue stuck out, seemed he spent most of his forties searching for a lolly, looked absolutely ridiculous but it stopped very quickly after he met his now partner, she put a stop to it almost instantly. He also stopped photographing every meal he had, every golf game, a smallest of details of every holiday and every facetime with his niece!! Safe to say his partner is liked within the family.

Well done to his DP for persevering - I'd have struggled tbh and would likely have got the ick with all of that before I was able to reform him 😂

I don't know anyone who does this. Mind you I'm not friends with anyone over 40 who posts pictures of themselves on social media. I find it a bizarre thing to do.

So it's ok for under 40s? 🤣

FestiveFruitloop · 01/12/2024 14:27

I think some people just pull silly faces in photos because they're self-conscious tbh. I don't do it myself but I think it is a reason for some.

I'm 38 so that's good news then 🤣🤣🤣

Unoexpress · 01/12/2024 14:36

It's not new. KISS were doing it in the 70's. It's rock & and roll, baby. These youngsters have a lot to learn.

Gaz98 · 01/12/2024 14:37

Awful. I also had work colleagues who used to pose sexily or even worse coyly in every photo. I am 44 and they were a few years older than me. I just looks desperate.

RaininSummer · 01/12/2024 14:48

I have seen a lot of Facebook posts from friends and colleagues doing this. It's quite horrible and almost as bad as the duck faced pouring which seems to be dying down. I don't think there is anybody under 40 on my FB other than family members.

needsomewarmsunshine · 01/12/2024 14:49

Don't do the tongue, never have, yuk put it away.

EachandEveryone · 01/12/2024 14:51

My niece who thinks she’s the only lesbian in the world does it through v shaped fingers. In every photo. To show how wild and lesbian she is. It’s just vile and common. She’s 30 and it’s a horrible look.

FoxLoxInSox · 01/12/2024 14:53

Doesn’t matter what the age (as tbh I think ageism and misogyny are worse than tongue-pulling)…. But anyone of any age / sex sticking their tongue out on photos just looks class-less, cheap and moronic.

EmotionalSupportPotato · 01/12/2024 14:53

I think it's because of insecurity. They don't want to be judged on their normal face so they pull a "crazy" face. It's sad that people can't just be who they are but they've probably been burnt too many times trying when they smile normally so have given up.

It's just a tongue.

lollypopsforme · 01/12/2024 14:58

Its been going on for years its not new.
Let people do what they want its not hurting you.

NigellaAwesome · 01/12/2024 14:58

I can't bear to see people's tongues, regardless of sex or age. Miley Cyrus and Kerry Katona are particular offenders who come to mind.

Lurkingandlearning · 01/12/2024 14:58

Purreh · 01/12/2024 13:49

Sounds like they want to give out a ‘we’re so wild and crazy!’ vibe.

I’d not thought of that. That would be very cringey.

My first thought was maybe they are self-conscious or don’t like having their picture taken and spoil the photo in the hopes they will be left out in future

MMOC · 01/12/2024 15:03

Im old and do this 😬 My daughter went through a phase of doing it and being old I’ve only just caught onto it.
Please don’t judge me too harshly, I promise I’m only having fun 🤩

Classless and cheap? Blimey.

I know. I’m now a moron and cheap 😭 I’ll admit to probably being classless though 😊

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 01/12/2024 15:06

Some people prefer to pull silly faces because then if they look daft, it's the silly face's fault and that's easier to deal with than always looking terrible in photographs. I really don't see why it's a problem, unless they're ruining wedding photographs or sticking their tongues out at funerals or something.

Makes me want to photobomb some photographs, just to annoy those with 'class' who are 'expensive' rather than 'cheap'. whatever the fuck that all means.

Oh no, now you’ve put an idea in my head 🤔 Old ladies photobombing gorgeous lady’s photos with their tongue out to the side.
Would be hated for it and be very cringy but I’d be in my element 😂

AloneLike · 01/12/2024 15:16

If you poke your tongue out, your cheeks are sucked in as in the classic 'duck pout' photo, so it's a way of doing a duck pout without appearing to do a duck pout.

TheSilkWorm · 01/12/2024 15:17

Lots of women want to have photos taken or take selfies and get attention online but also feel self conscious because they know it's cringe so they do something silly like this so they can pretend they are being 'ironic' or something. It's so embarrassing.

Jifmicroliquid · 01/12/2024 15:17

I hate this. Also I’ve noticed a friends male partner does it too.
I find it disgusting and bit cringey.

MMOC · 01/12/2024 15:17

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 01/12/2024 14:05

It's definitely a thing. Often peace sign and tongue stuck out. Younger women had been doing it for a while, but maybe it's caught on with some older people. It looks utterly idiotic.

Oh my, you’ve obviously seen me do it down the local. I’m sorry you find it idiotic. Older people tend to be slow at catching on to things. Please don’t be to harsh on us. We don’t mean to embarrass you or anyone else, we are just having fun in our own archaic way 😊
