I don't think he was talking about older women, I think it was those of the younger generation who haven't had to live through years of misogyny and are more likely to call out this kind of behaviour.

It’s a well established phrase with a reasonably distinct meaning. Here’s a NYT article examining it.

https://www.nytimes.com/1995/07/02/magazine/in-language-a-woman-of-a-certain-age.html

Excerpt:

Reached in San Francisco, Dr. Rubin, whose book indicates she is now in her early 70's, was surprised to learn of the long English history of the phase because "it has a long history in French, where it refers to women of fortyish and thereabouts who are able to initiate boys and young men into the beauties of sexual encounters. The early use in English seems to be about spinsterhood, but the French meaning has nothing to do with marriage."

Well, Holy fuck and hold the antifreeze.

I don’t think Gregg Wallace is particularly eggstatic either. I always thought that he reminded me of an egg and now that I know his first is spelt as Gregg, I feel like Egg Wallace is more apt. Hopefully it won’t put me off eggs now.

Wel Ggreg is pretty crass so its entirely fitting

Nah, it's all just bantz and those ridiculous middle aged women can't take a joke. And anyone who was sexually harassed should have been flattered. Can't say anything these days.

The man is almost a walking cliche and GB news is probably in contact negotiations with him right now...

JohnTheRevelator · 01/12/2024 20:14

I heard this on LBC radio news this morning. I was totally flabbergasted. Up until now,I was of the opinion, innocent until proven guilty. But with that comment,I've completely changed my mind. What an utter misogynistic twat. A handful of middle class women of a certain age?! Gaslighting at its finest. As if 'middle class women of a certain age' should be grateful and flattered that such a fine specimen of masculinity as him would bother with them. And as for saying that there's been 'only 13 complaints out of 4000 guests over twenty years',so bloody what?! One complaint is too many! He's well and truly sealed his fate now. His lawyer must be apoplectic.

Delphiniumandlupins · 01/12/2024 20:16

I might buy myself a "Middle-class woman of a certain age" t-shirt

Greg and those like him. We are coming for you and we will cut off your balls shove them down your neck and hope you choke on them

Seems a bit unnecessary to advocate physical violence and criminal assault. He's being investigated and removed from scheduled programmes, and rightly so.

I didn’t mean it literally 😂

🤣🤣 bet the bakers are gutted they share a name with the gr-eggy one. Luckily for them I'm very loyal so will not allow the unfortunate name association to put me off and I'm a bit addicted to the sausage rolls

To combine another quote I think "Bloody difficult middle-class woman of a certain age" has a nice ring to it.

What's the saying? Give someone enough rope.. (apologies for the awful phrase, but it is entirely apt, here)

He's shown his true colours, and also his spectacular lack of awareness. He was always hiding in plain sight.

Apologies again for so many idioms, but when the world gives you idiots, what can you do?

I’m pretty sure that saying to a female contestant who was squeamish about handling raw fish "Watching you try to touch a fish is like watching a rapist do foreplay" crosses the line between humour/innuendo and offensiveness.

🤢

How about 'Too old to be Wife Number 5. Thank God.'

aurynne · 01/12/2024 20:36

A fat, bald, ugly, 60-year-old twat who looks like an overcooked turtle making remarks about middle aged (i.e. younger than him) women?

The delusion is big on this one.

BrightonFrock · 01/12/2024 20:40

You’ve already lost the argument once you start using “woke” as an insult.

Dark sense of humour is Charlie Brooker or Dostoyevsky. Wallace is a. Not funny and b. A twat.

Edited

Nailed it.

🤣🤣 I mean surely the fact that four women have taken leave of their senses agreed to that position should be one of life's enduring mysteries. Up there with the Bermuda Triangle and Mary Celeste!

C8H10N4O2 · 01/12/2024 20:49

ohwhataluvverly · 01/12/2024 18:40

How do you know I've never been in a position where I've had to call out someone's behaviour?

I'm not saying 'call out someone's behaviour'. We all do that. I'm talking about making a formal complaint about someone with power and status within your field.

I am 100% certain because you wouldn't be coming out with statements about Kirsty Allsopp like:

-I honestly can't see why a wealthy celebrity would be scared of complaining about him to the program makers for sharing TMI about his sex life

-Sorry not buying it, I think she is significantly powerful and wealthy enough to not have been scared by Gregg and I think she only really cares about the publicity. This is generally what separates celebrities from the rest of us and I don't worship them for it.
Just because she's female celebrity, she doesn't automatically get a free pass for her behaviour from me.

-I'm not blaming women, I'm blaming Kirsty Allsopp specifically.

Your focus on her celebrity and wealth shows that you have no concept of what flows from a formal complaint and what you fear you will be faced with. I fully expect now that you are going to try to do what all those in your position do on the internet which is lie to justify a wholly unjustifiable position and come out with all kinds of claims to expertise in the fields of formal complaints.

You obviously have a bitterness about wealth celebrity and Kirsty Allsopp in particular but just to repeat this is not about her, it's about Greg Wallace's behaviour. Him. Not her.

I'm sure all the young women who work with you (if in fact you have a job) will be delighted that such a marvellous beacon of support glows silently within their workplace.

Yep I've done that - complained about the behaviour of someone far more powerful in my field when I was still fairly junior. I won't pretend it was easy and I certainly went through that stage of being convinced it was my fault somehow. I never saw complaining as optional - some of the women he was perving on were even younger and more vulnerable than me..

Its possible for two things to be true. The behaviour was entirely down to Wallace himself. Its disappointing if other "talent" as powerful and wealthy as Allsopp (wealthier than Wallace and arguably more influential in her field) noted the behaviour but didn't put in a complaint (which other celeb women had done). I would hope that she did and that just hasn't been released to the press.

The Wallaces of this world would not be able to behave this way so often, if more of their peers (both in the exec layer and the talent group) were willing to challenge or raise the behaviour issues.

Quite a few celebs and staff did raise the behaviour issues, despite being in a less advantageous position compared to Wallace.

I always had reservations about him. Wondered what a green grocer was doing judging a cooking show. I wonder who he had connections with, maybe a sexist pal higher up the food chain!

@greengreyblue - blame BBC4

Wallace: "It took us two years to conceive with Sid." US?!? He actually conceived their child also, according to him 🤣

He cannot even stand the fact that his wife did something he can never, ever do.

Fizbosshoes · 01/12/2024 21:05

Normally in these type of situations (and let's admit it happens fairly frequently) there are 3 options

  • say nothing while you take legal advice
  • strenuously deny all allegations
  • apologise and say no offence was intended

Greggs gone rogue and basically gone for option 4
Yeah basically it's true, but it's only the boring, mean old middle aged, middle class women that don't like it, so nothing to see here....no one else complained so they must have thought I was great!
