"In over 20 years of television, can you imagine how many women, female contestants on MasterChef, have made sexual remarks or sexual innuendo - can you imagine?"

I know she's not on Masterchef, but I'd say that's a thinly veiled attempt to take Mary Berry down with him.

ladymalfoy45 · 01/12/2024 18:23

I'd like to borrow one of Andi Oliver's fans and shove it up his nose.

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/12/2024 18:26

Just trundling through SM...

Multiple pages/outlets now sharing the Katy Brand clip and if this isn't a clear example of why women do NOT complain... I don't know what is.

She is being ripped to shreds over this - her size/weight, her comedy, her career (and she has had a career, if not all of it on main stream TV, shes done comedy, acting, voice work and is a writer of both novels and scripts. I'd say she's taken what she wanted from the industry and lived a good life off it and I'd call that a success!)...

She's being accused of 'cashing in' or trying to boost her career..

The general assumption is that she has shared this clip and made a complaint - when she has literally done nothing but exist in the clip, and provide a response when asked about it over the last couple of days.

So this is what women get when they didn't stick their head above the parapet and make a complaint. This is what you get for being the recipient of a grotty bit of innuendo that is so mild the production company left it in, and the broadcaster aired it. This is what she gets for having said 'excuse me?' and laughed in embarrassment.

What a surprise people didn't dare complain about far nastier stuff for which there isn't widely available film evidence!

ohwhataluvverly · 01/12/2024 18:27

Sorry not buying it, I think she is significantly powerful and wealthy enough to not have been scared by Gregg and I think she only really cares about the publicity. This is generally what separates celebrities from the rest of us and I don't worship them for it.
Just because she's female celebrity, she doesn't automatically get a free pass for her behaviour from me

You obviously have never been in this position and are shockingly naive. Good for your for your blinkered robust idiocy. I have been in this position and I can tell you that you would be very very surprised how fucking terrifying it is to make a complaint.

It is not about being 'scared by Gregg' or the person you are complaining about. It is about being terrified by the overall machine and what will happen to you. The fear is that you won't be believed or told that you are an idiot/need to get over it/ have no sense of humour at a low level and at a higher level that you will get caught up in a sausage machine of complaints and get ground up.

Anyone who made a complaint against someone with the Television Status of Greg Wallace knows they would be challening someone seen as very VERY financially valuable to the BBC and someone the BBC have a strong vested interest in protecting. You make a complaint here (just as in any industry) and whatever the outcome (upheld or dismissed), you fear you will be marked forever as a complainer, not to be trusted, a trouble maker in your industry.

In any industry there is a lot of choice. People can always choose other people to work with for any reason.

If you've worked hard, attained a certain level of success and are in this awful position of wanting to complain, the fear of the repercussions is unbelievable.

It is also likely you feel isolated and will have no support. "They will all close ranks against me".

It's a big decision to complain and history shows again and again, these fears are not unfounded. Look at Harvey Weinstein for example. All those women. Actresses who didn't acquiese to his demands/ complained never worked in his films again. They were right to think it would tank their careers.

Have a bit of empathy and try to imagine how frightening it is.

He needs a refund from whoever is advising him on PR.

Don't shoot the PR adviser (if there is one). It's more likely he's ignoring the advice he's been given because he knows better.

I’m not a fan of Kirsty Allsopp but TBF she may have reasons for feeling she couldn’t speak out at the time.

However, have to admit it irks me when women who really can afford (quite literally) to speak out with much less risk to their losing their home, reputation or career (and in some cases are the first to give their opinion on other issues) jump on the bandwagon once others have been much braver in speaking up.

I felt the same about Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie coming out about Weinstein during Me Too. Unlike the women who first spoke out, they were both well-connected in Hollywood from the get-go, with parents who were big in the film industry. Unlike women like Ambra Gutierrez.

But, I guess whatever their background, women can feel frightened, intimidated or threatened by sexual harassment and sexual assault.

I get your point, but there's a huge difference between this and Weinstein.

I honestly can't see why a wealthy celebrity would be scared of complaining about him to the program makers for sharing TMI about his sex life and walking off the job if they're uncomfortable with it. The only thing they might be scared of is that the program they're making doesn't get made.

I think that's just tantamount to accepting the behaviour when someone has a high profile and more money than they know what to do with. Just looks like turning a blind eye to me.

Maybe I'm not the one who's naive.

You can't use Weistein as an example, it's a relatively low profile TV presenter sharing TMI about his sex life to someone who is of equal or higher profile that can easily refuse to work with him.

Some regular contestants too. One of the winners has said she complained after seeing another contestant groped.

Tessabelle74 · 01/12/2024 18:36

That's because "women of a certain age" are sick to death of giving the fake laugh or being told you're boring or stuck up if you don't! We're sick of this shit and once you hit that "certain age" we stop trying to be polite about it!

midgetastic · 01/12/2024 18:36

If you bothered to read the words of Kristy and had ever been in a similar situation you would recognise instantly the varying thoughts and emotions she had

Don't disbelieve or belittle women as a default

To the surprise of no one, women can’t bloody win

If they complain they are torn to shreds. If they don’t complain, they are torn to shreds

Too old , too young, attention seeking, attention seeking, too posh, too common , money grabbing, jumping on the bandwagon …

Ad nauseum, ad infinitum

ohwhataluvverly · 01/12/2024 18:40

How do you know I've never been in a position where I've had to call out someone's behaviour?

I'm not saying 'call out someone's behaviour'. We all do that. I'm talking about making a formal complaint about someone with power and status within your field.

I am 100% certain because you wouldn't be coming out with statements about Kirsty Allsopp like:

-I honestly can't see why a wealthy celebrity would be scared of complaining about him to the program makers for sharing TMI about his sex life

-Sorry not buying it, I think she is significantly powerful and wealthy enough to not have been scared by Gregg and I think she only really cares about the publicity. This is generally what separates celebrities from the rest of us and I don't worship them for it.
Just because she's female celebrity, she doesn't automatically get a free pass for her behaviour from me.

-I'm not blaming women, I'm blaming Kirsty Allsopp specifically.

Your focus on her celebrity and wealth shows that you have no concept of what flows from a formal complaint and what you fear you will be faced with. I fully expect now that you are going to try to do what all those in your position do on the internet which is lie to justify a wholly unjustifiable position and come out with all kinds of claims to expertise in the fields of formal complaints.

You obviously have a bitterness about wealth celebrity and Kirsty Allsopp in particular but just to repeat this is not about her, it's about Greg Wallace's behaviour. Him. Not her.

I'm sure all the young women who work with you (if in fact you have a job) will be delighted that such a marvellous beacon of support glows silently within their workplace.

Bigbadmama · 01/12/2024 18:41

Some of the production staff have spoken out now. Not just the "celebrity" participants.

I think that says a lot about you, and what you assume about others wealth status.

I’m pretty sure that saying to a female contestant who was squeamish about handling raw fish "Watching you try to touch a fish is like watching a rapist do foreplay" crosses the line between humour/innuendo and offensiveness.

WTF?

Wallace said that?
