How long does you hairdresser take? I'm losing the will to live...

Firefly45 · 28/11/2024 21:13

I have shoulder length hair and have full head of highlights.
I'm in hairdressers for 3.5 to 4hrs!

My hairdresser works for herself with no juniors but she seems to book 2 people in so is constantly leaving one of us to do the other...she says ill cut her hair while yours is taking its colour. But it never works out like that..end up sitting around waiting for her to finish other woman or other woman waiting for me.

I've been coming to her years and feel like I'm in a relationship I can't get out of.

Just wondered if this is normal for hairdressers?

I do love my hair when it's finished!

Long ish hair and cut and colour is never less than 3 hrs, same at every salon I've ever been to. I find it tedious but needs must

Namechangeobviously2024 · 29/11/2024 18:40

The things that take time are 1. The application which in my case is a long time. 2. The developing time.

No, it's the faffing. I gave up on the last hairdresser when they booked me in for 10a.m. I arrived at 9.55. At 10.15 they sat me in the chair... and then buggered off for another 20 mins! I have no idea why they accepted an appointment for 10.00 if they couldn't start until after half past. The whole appointment continued in that vein. Absolute waste of my time.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 29/11/2024 18:48

I get a full head of balayage plus a cut and dry (but not blow dry) on boob length hair which takes about 3-3.5 hours.

It's colouring that's the problem! If you can learn to love your natural - greying; salt 'n pepper; streaky; whitening - hair, then you're going to save a lot of time and money. I eventually gave up "low-lighting" (so expensive) & learned to love my grey - now white. It's the condition of the hair and a really good cut that makes the difference. You can always tell when hair is dyed (I particularly wish men would stop doing it - so obvious) and it plays hell with hair condition.

Focus on your face & neck! Moisturise and botox if you feel like it. Spend money on a really good cutter.

Pelsall116 · 29/11/2024 18:57

Its why I stopped going and reverted to colouring at home; a lot cheaper too

CMOTDibbler · 29/11/2024 18:58

I don't have my hair coloured (am white haired) and go to a hairdresser who isn't on the high street (not quite works from her home, but just her in a single room). I have long hair and lots of it, but I can still have my eyebrows waxed, gel nails done, a wash cut and blow dry and be out in under 2 hours. And that costs me under £80

Oblomov24 · 29/11/2024 19:08

Mine too is quick, occasional 1/2 highlights, a cut and blow dry in 2.5 hours. Cut and blow dry in less than an hour. I couldn't put up with some of the timings listed here.

Rhaenys · 29/11/2024 19:11

I used to have to write off a whole morning or afternoon when I went, so I stopped going as I used to dread it.

Randomer68 · 29/11/2024 19:13

Long thick hair. 2.5hrs for highlights, root colour, trim and blow dry. He only has 1 client at a time. Every 8-12 weeks.

SnowLeopard5 · 29/11/2024 19:34

I stopped going to salons for this reason. I now go to a lovely hairdresser in her own home who sees one client at a time and is super fast, and really lovely to chat with. Feels like visiting a friend.

Deeperthantheocean · 29/11/2024 19:37

An hour and a half to 2 hours with highlights, invetween colour, cut, style and for an amazing £50. Outstanding place as well, lovely girls, all my family go there. X

Justlikeheavenn · 29/11/2024 19:45

I get my individual micro ring extensions removed, highlights, toner, a wash and blow dry and then the individual extensions put back in and trimmed/styled and that takes about 3.5-4 hours. Seems very long if there are no extensions involved.

HouseHelpNeeded1 · 29/11/2024 19:45

TriangleLight · 29/11/2024 04:23

@HouseHelpNeeded1 the price depends very much on where you live. My cut colour and blow dry is about £70. The advice you got sounds odd. Book a consultation with another hairdresser preferably one recommended by someone with good hair!

@Firefly45 i feel your pain, it takes so long I put it off! But it’s so worth it when it’s done

Thank you, it did seem a bit like she was trying to sell stuff to me as it was really obvious I don't go to the hairdresser (my mum trims it every so often). I feel like I would like to look a bit more put-together / professional. I will ask around x

HouseHelpNeeded1 · 29/11/2024 19:49

BasiliskStare · 29/11/2024 01:17

@HouseHelpNeeded1 - If this helps I have naturally dark brown hair but getting very grey / white round the face. I have highlights of an ash colour in a T shape so round my face and on top. I makes the grey so much less noticeable and once I had it done after a few goes I can leave it 5 or even 6 months - so it isn't a monthly thing . I should have it done more often but doesn't look disastrous if I don't. Best thing I did ( for me ) - trying to keep it dark brown would have been monthly colouring.
As to cost that's so much dependent on where / what type of salon , so I would just ask a trusted salon near you and actually ask more than one. Mine isn't terribly glamorous but the hairdressers are good and very competent a they are pretty reasonably priced for where I live compared to the more upmarket salons.

Thank you, I will ask around. That's really helpful from one brunette to another! My greys are all around my face / temples, and I hate how it looks but really don't know where to start and am worried I'm gonna get ripped off (e.g. with them trying to persuade me to do Olaplex before they'd even so much as look at me!)

Im a hairdresser and yes 3.5-4 hours is about normal. It takes an hr + to put the foils in, 45m development then possibly a toner, a cut and blowDry is another 45 mins - 1 hour. It’s a lengthy process, and if she’s self employed she won’t have a junior no- I don’t- and I’m self employed. I just give myself a little bit of time to remove my own colours etc but sometimes I doesn’t work like that. If you aren’t happy stop seeing her, simple really.

dementedpixie · 29/11/2024 20:14

I got highlights today and it took about an hour to put the foils in with ½ an hour processing time. Then it washed and cut and blow dried and tonged. Was out within 2½ hours even though I had to wait a bit for her to finish putting rollers in on another client. Cost £67.

Edenmum2 · 29/11/2024 20:29

I have long hair and a full head takes 2.5-3 hours max, including cut and blow dry

Jack80 · 29/11/2024 20:36

If you could get a mobile. I would as I love having my hair done at home.

catin8oots · 29/11/2024 20:48

Mines about 4 hours too. Full head of highlights and a cut.

absolutely hate it but it's a necessary evil 4 times a year

tommyhoundmum · 29/11/2024 20:58

Take a book or Kindle next time.

I really dislike going to the hairdressers, so I go with clean short curly hair and leave 20 mins later a bit shorter with Paul Mitchell full circle curl preparation rubbed in.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 29/11/2024 22:34

About 2 hours, the cut takes about 3 mins as I have fine hair. 4 is insane.

TaterTots68 · 29/11/2024 22:42

20 minutes tops...but I have a pixie cut and it just needs a dry trim every month. I colour it myself at home 🤷

SirChenjins · 29/11/2024 22:52

2 hours - colour and cut. She’s mobile so she’s on a tight schedule which suits me perfectly. I stopped going to the salon because of all the faffing.

Supersimkin7 · 29/11/2024 22:55

Binned slow salons off after yet another 5-hr trip ended in boredom and disaster.

I thought it was suspiciously long, I was right. Woman had no idea.

Length of time in hairdresser does not equal skill of hairdresser - rather the opposite.

2.5 hrs max for highlights and cut and always tell them you’re in a hurry.

Crispynoodle · 29/11/2024 23:15

I'm not a fan of being in a hair dressers for a long time. It typically takes 2 hours for a head of foils wash cut and dry
