How long does you hairdresser take? I'm losing the will to live...

Firefly45 · 28/11/2024 21:13

I have shoulder length hair and have full head of highlights.
I'm in hairdressers for 3.5 to 4hrs!

My hairdresser works for herself with no juniors but she seems to book 2 people in so is constantly leaving one of us to do the other...she says ill cut her hair while yours is taking its colour. But it never works out like that..end up sitting around waiting for her to finish other woman or other woman waiting for me.

I've been coming to her years and feel like I'm in a relationship I can't get out of.

Just wondered if this is normal for hairdressers?

I do love my hair when it's finished!

Last time I was in for a colour - I was there six bloody hours!!! I ended up having to walk around to the nearest shop wearing a gown, hair in foils, to get a bite to eat

Thats when I decided I was going grey and that was it !!

Now my hairdresser is good and she will arrange her colours around each other so theres one at the sink, one in foils, one getting cut etc, but that day I was having a full colour strip and then adding colour and my head was fried ( not literally lol )

I do understand that they have to fit in other customers around you, like that day it cost me 80quid, Id not work for 6 hours for just £80

longtompot · 28/11/2024 23:36

Mine has only ever been that long @Firefly45 because I was a model for a trainee and they were naturally slower, plus everything was double checked. I had two people drying my hair at the end just to get me out of the door I think🤣

scotstars · 28/11/2024 23:41

I've had hairdressers in past do this and never return it's poor planning and I get they have to make money but by cramming in too many clients no1 gets a good service and they r not cheap!
Mine is about 2 hours for highlights, root touch up, cut and blow dry on thick longish hair. Sometimes hairdresser has 1 other person in for a cut and blow dry but it's never been timed so either person is waiting.

That's ages.
Mine take 1-2hrs and I hate it. It's so dull. I just want to get out of there.

Franjipanl8r · 28/11/2024 23:49

I pay £20 for a blunt bob haircut which takes 10-15 minutes. I have short fine hair and can’t be arsed to die it!

cuppaonce · 28/11/2024 23:53

I have shoulder length hair, so it’s 2 hours for foils, cut and blow dry.

Jeez Louise. That's madness! You gave Stockholm syndrome.

😂

sandgrown · 29/11/2024 00:06

Mine took 2 hrs 50 mins today for highlights, cut and dry . When I tried to book she was “full” but agreed to squeeze me in round another client so I was prepared to wait . Because of the wait she didn’t charge me for a deep conditioner. I consider the time in the hairdressers as relaxation time so I read a magazine or scroll on my phone .Today I made a mental Christmas list .

Please share where?! Mine is 160!

She does it at her house, so I guess she has fewer overheads - she closed her salon about 10 years ago and kept a few clients but doesn't take on new ones any more, alas! I know I'd pay double that elsewhere, so I put up with the slowness!

MrsAga · 29/11/2024 00:59

Slightly longer than shoulder length, full head of foils (3 colours) wash, blow dry, straighten and cut. 2 hrs 30 mins & she did 2 dry trims while the colour took. £80. Wouldn’t like to sit any longer. I Only go every 8-10 weeks.

SnowFrogJelly · 29/11/2024 01:03

My hairdresser books in 2 people at same time but never takes longer than 1.5 hours for colour cut and blow dry

You need to change hairdresser!

BasiliskStare · 29/11/2024 01:17

@HouseHelpNeeded1 - If this helps I have naturally dark brown hair but getting very grey / white round the face. I have highlights of an ash colour in a T shape so round my face and on top. I makes the grey so much less noticeable and once I had it done after a few goes I can leave it 5 or even 6 months - so it isn't a monthly thing . I should have it done more often but doesn't look disastrous if I don't. Best thing I did ( for me ) - trying to keep it dark brown would have been monthly colouring.
As to cost that's so much dependent on where / what type of salon , so I would just ask a trusted salon near you and actually ask more than one. Mine isn't terribly glamorous but the hairdressers are good and very competent a they are pretty reasonably priced for where I live compared to the more upmarket salons.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 29/11/2024 01:35

I have shoulder length and a bit hair, have full highlights and a toner applied, only me being done, and I really don't know how but honestly, one time I was there about seven hours.

I go once a year 😂

PenguinLover24 · 29/11/2024 03:42

I love my hairdresser and she's the best person I've had doing my hair after some disasters elsewhere but she also takes ages. I think the longest I was in there was 7 hours and I only ever used to get either highlights or balayage with a trim then blow dried and straightened or curled (I tell her to do what's quickest) after having my baby I told her take it back to my natural colour and add a couple of natural highlights throughout so if I don't get the time to come for a while i dont look like and idiot. I've not been in 10 months because I just don't have the time (or even the patience) to wait that long. She also has people in between me when colour is taking etc but I don't understand how sometimes I'm sitting there for hours and other times she takes it off quicker, it does seem to be dependant on how many people she has alongside me!

Mumistiredzzzz · 29/11/2024 03:48

Good god, how do you all have so much time to spend sitting for hours?!

Beaniebeemer · 29/11/2024 04:15

I had a full head highlights, cut, toner, style yesterday. It took 5 hours! I’ve got arthritis so sitting for that long was quite uncomfortable and the salon was quite cold. It will be a while before I do that again!

TriangleLight · 29/11/2024 04:23

@HouseHelpNeeded1 the price depends very much on where you live. My cut colour and blow dry is about £70. The advice you got sounds odd. Book a consultation with another hairdresser preferably one recommended by someone with good hair!

@Firefly45 i feel your pain, it takes so long I put it off! But it’s so worth it when it’s done

Mummyoflittledragon · 29/11/2024 04:29

My hairdresser is super fast. I have long hair and a half head of 2 colours, tinted rather than bleached. It takes the hairdresser just over an hour. My dd has extreme bleached highlights so oodles of foils and a tiny bit of her natural colour to break it up. The first time for her whole head on long, thick hair was about 3.5 hours. Now it’s roof touch up she’s out in about 2.5, maybe less.

These timings include a trim and styling.

RosesAndHellebores · 29/11/2024 05:25

Mumistiredzzzz · 29/11/2024 03:48

Good god, how do you all have so much time to spend sitting for hours?!

The time some of your hairdressrs take, they'd have to start paying me.

FlowerBlowing · 29/11/2024 05:33

30 minutes for a cut and blow-dry. I don't have my hair washed - she just sprays it with water. So much easier.

hattie43 · 29/11/2024 05:38

3-4 hrs here for full head highlights , trim and dry . I'm never kept waiting too long between stages and I have really thick hair .

Splat92 · 29/11/2024 05:46

I never coloured my hair before this week and used to have a 15-20 min cut. A couple of days ago I decided I really needed to do something about my greys and decided to have half head of foils. It took 3.5 hours and I was so shocked with how long the process took.

onwardsup4 · 29/11/2024 07:42

This is the reason I am no longer blonde. I once had full head plus tape extensions put in. The extensions actually don't take long but appointment started at 10 and when I walked out it was getting dark. Was an anxious mess by this point and now box dye my own hair and just get it trimmed.

cheezncrackers · 29/11/2024 08:15

That sounds a bit slow, but if you go to a salon and she's doing two at once that's why. Do you have thick hair? I don't, so my hair is quite quick to do. Even so, when someone does a professional job of highlights it's not a fast process.

I have shoulder length hair and alternate between full head and half head of highlights. Full head takes 2.5 hours for highlights, wash, cut, blow dry. Half head is about 2. My hairdresser comes to my house though, so she's only doing me and the only waiting time is while my colour takes. It used to take longer when she worked in a salon.

Hotafternoon · 29/11/2024 08:27

I have a mobile hairdresser and she's coming later this morning for colour.

I have a fairly short bob, two colours put in and wash and blow dry. Probably takes about one and a half to two hours in total.

I have my hair cut separately a couple of weeks before a colour.

I gave up on salons about 10 years ago due to one occasion being in there nearly four hours. The junior spent almost half an hour washing and rinsing my hair as the stylist was busy doing someone else's colour. I wanted to scream.

I never went back and found a mobile hairdresser. Best thing I ever did.
