How long does you hairdresser take? I'm losing the will to live...

I have shoulder length hair and have full head of highlights.
I'm in hairdressers for 3.5 to 4hrs!

My hairdresser works for herself with no juniors but she seems to book 2 people in so is constantly leaving one of us to do the other...she says ill cut her hair while yours is taking its colour. But it never works out like that..end up sitting around waiting for her to finish other woman or other woman waiting for me.

I've been coming to her years and feel like I'm in a relationship I can't get out of.

Just wondered if this is normal for hairdressers?

I do love my hair when it's finished!

Had my colour done this week - it took over 3 hours and was only half head and roots. It's so painful, what do you talk about with the stylist after the first hour?? Such a waste of time really.

LeonoraCazalet · 29/11/2024 08:31

Get yourself a new hairdresser through recommendations. It'll be good for your new look and good for your pocket. I wouldn't worry about establishing relationships. Better to operate on quality. At the end of the day you are paying for a service.

PuppyMonkey · 29/11/2024 08:48

Been many years since I used to have highlights plus general colour - artistic colour, they used to call it - and it would take 3 hours. This was a big salon with juniors jumping in to do washes and mix the colours etc. it was nice to a certain extent, because I sat around reading magazines which I never got the chance to do. But after several years of this, it did become very tedious.

I went grey three years ago, so all is well now. Grin

I hate the hours in the hair
Dresser. Full head of lights. And it's 3.5 hours. I often say no cut because I want to get out asap. And it £220. I might find another hairdressers.

Redhairandhottubs · 29/11/2024 08:58

Mine always takes about 3 hours. I just resign myself to it. Take snacks, my kindle, phone. Sometimes I even take my laptop and work! I love my hairdresser and have been going to him for years and would never go anywhere else.

leia24 · 29/11/2024 09:00

3 hours for full head tint treatment cut and blow.. feels fast to me there's never any waiting round

PotOfViolas · 29/11/2024 17:41

I used to have foils in the past. I can't remember how long it took, but definitely not as long as it takes your hairdresser. Luckily now I just dye it at home with superdrug 28 wash semi permanent dye. I get a wet cut at the hairdresser which doesn't take long and I don't go that often.

stripeyshutters · 29/11/2024 17:52

The things that take time are 1. The application which in my case is a long time. 2. The developing time. I go to a salon and a junior will apply toner, wash etc and there's no waiting around. I think usually at least 3 hours.

Snackpocket · 29/11/2024 17:54

In a salon environment you are unlikely to get a hairdresser who doesn't have clients booked in between your colour and cut. They aren't going to stand around for 45 mins while the colour develops. So they do another colour or cut in between and sometimes they run over because often they have no idea exactly how long the in between person will take. Salons are usually owned by someone else so there is no choice in the matter. Back in my day you'd book 45-60 mins for colour application, 45 mind in between and another 45 mins for the cut and blow dry. So that's 2 hours 15/30 but it can always take longer!

fairytailcat · 29/11/2024 17:57

You don't need a full head every time! What are you doing?

My hairdresser books and charges in slots. Most i ever need is 2.5 hours

Wow. I'm glad I am embracing the grey because my ADHD would not be able to cope with sitting in a salon chair for hours. A cut and blow dry takes an hour and that's bad enough!

I can just about manage a dry cut and it took me a while to calm down in the salon...

My lovely hairdresser started to wave the hairdryer at me the other day and I fled. Not a chance I'd sit still for 3-4 hours.

CyranoDeBergerQuack · 29/11/2024 17:58

I feel your pain! Cut and colour takes about 3 hours for me.
I'm climbing walls in 40 mins.
Then they want to blow-dry it...
Nooooo!

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 29/11/2024 18:06

Around 2 hours, I think. No hanging around while she sorts other clients as she only ever has one in at a time, but she does pop into her house to do some housework while the colour is doing its thing!

I pay around £100 for a cut and colour. That's quite expensive round here...London/ Southern prices are insane!Grin

Surely just tell them that you don't want it blow dried if you don't want it?!

BooBooDoodle · 29/11/2024 18:11

4hr girl here! Very thick hair. I only have half a head of highlights and a cut. I’m not exactly a high maintenance kind of girl, getting my hair done is the only thing i do as I like my hair to look good and it’s an ordeal. Makes me really glad I don’t get nails, brows, lashes and other stuff done because I cannot stand the fuss and time commitment.

Of course! But they say 'will just give a quick dry so it's not very wet when you leave', then you are pinned to the chair by ropes made of discarded hair, and whoosh, you are Farrah Fawcett-Majors...

66babe · 29/11/2024 18:19

Mine is the same ! And I've got a really short pixie

I love the way it is at the end though and very reasonably priced so I tolerate the multiple bookings , wait to start , wait in between each stage and just don't plan much for that afternoon 🤨

thatwasme24 · 29/11/2024 18:22

Mine was like that. It was her and her husband running the place. Sure my hair was always lovely but it was never worth the time or money. I dye and cut my own hair at home in 25 mins and then style it with my Dyson in another 15-20, good to go then until wash day comes back. And I can do all that without spending half as much money and having to talk to people!!

Amaranthasweetandfair · 29/11/2024 18:23

Mine takes hours, I have long hair, it's usually at least three hours. Highlights take an hour to put in and then the my start getting washed out in stages almost straight away. When I first started getting them it was much quicker as they had those heat machines!

Georgyporky · 29/11/2024 18:27

I've been doing my own highlights since I was made redundant 20 years ago & strapped for cash.
i use a cap & very thin crochet hook to pull through fine strands, & use a permanent hair colour.
Less than an hour, less than £10, & looks more natural than the thick stripes some of my friends pay a fortune for.

Willyoujust · 29/11/2024 18:28

Mine takes 5 hours for a full head, toner, cut and blow dry. Takes up my whole Saturday.

VickyPollard25 · 29/11/2024 18:28

Firefly45 · 28/11/2024 21:14

I should add that I leave with wet hair (my choice) cos i can't bear waiting another 40min to dry it!

Leave! I changed hairdressers this year after almost 10 years with the last one. He was the same. I’d sit there for hours bored to tears as he either worked on other clients or bitch about his sex life. I told him no bleach, but he was using it and ruining my hair. It’s never been better since going somewhere else! New hairdresser comes to my house too, so it’s about a third of the price - and truly no bleach!

autumn1610 · 29/11/2024 18:31

I’ve changed to a hairdressers where it’s so chilled and they only have you, not jumping between clients etc. your not sat there wondering have they forgot me etc it’s lovely. She might grab her lunch or take the dog for a walk etc offers to order you food if they are doing a deliveroo etc I won’t change now. I used to find the whole experience so stressful and highlights and cut il
probably there 2-3hours

drspouse · 29/11/2024 18:32

Short shoulder length hair, full head of highlights, cut and blow dry. 2 hours.

drspouse · 29/11/2024 18:33

(small but mildly trendy town, NW England, £105 for a full head and the rest).
