Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

Absolutely not. My DC, who don't sleep well at the best of times wake up every time the heating comes on. We can't even have it on for a bit before we get up, as then they just get up earlier, so your still getting up in cold house, but at a god awful time.

Technically the thermostat is 'on' and would kick in if the house went below 5°, but it never does.

SprinkleCake · 22/11/2024 16:08

This is the first winter in our new home so we’re still learning what works best for this house. Over over the past week I’ve noticed that the temperature drops super low with no heating overnight but I am reluctant to have it on too much.

WiddlinDiddlin · 22/11/2024 16:09

Well.. no, because I was brought up by tight arse misers..

But also no because I am a tight arse miser, and also because since the builders did something random to it, our boiler will either do heating/hot water on, or off. It will NOT talk to the thermostat at all, and so it is either raging hot, or its off.

So we have it on morning and evening for a few hours, so I can have a shower without getting hypothermia... and keep the house from freezing, and the rest of the time it is off.

Would do me very little good to have it on at night as there are no rads upstairs bar the heated towel rail in the bathroom, so I'd be relying on heat from the rads downstairs coming up and thats not going to make much odds really.

I have two duvets on the bed, can add another heavy blanket, have a hot water bottle and three dogs piled on the bed and that does the trick. In the evening when it goes off downstairs, we sit under a duvet and pile of dogs so keep toasty warm that way.

pinksheetss · 22/11/2024 16:09

Thermostat always set to 18, same overnight so will come on if needed.
Usually it's not on, if I find a chill through the day I up it to 20 but that's all.

But yeah always 18.

Smokesandeats · 22/11/2024 16:09

No, neither of us like the heating on overnight as it can get stuffy overnight. You need to buy electric blankets, thicker duvets and warm fleece pyjamas.

I am amazed that people actually keep their heating on overnight. Trust me, you do not need heating on when you are in bed - you are wasting your money.

Dd used to wet the bed if it was below 18c definitely not a waste then.

We still keep the thermostat set to 18.5c all day long all year round. Keeps the house not cold nor hot.

ObliviousCoalmine · 22/11/2024 16:10

My heating is always off. I just do the one hour boost once or twice a day. The house is quite well insulated though. I've never thought about having heating on at night, we do have electric blankets on the beds though.

Lifeomars · 22/11/2024 16:11

This would have been unaffordable for me even prior to the current price hikes. in the good old days before heating became a luxury item for many, I would have mine on for 2 hours am so I could get up and get ready for work in a warm home and then for 4 hours in the evening so I came home to a warm home and could enjoy a pleasant evening. At approx £2 an hour it would cost me £12 a day to do this now. That would be £84 a week and that is without the cost of cooking, lighting, hot wanted and the standing charge. I am at a loss as to how anyone could afford to have the heating on for another 8 hours or thereabouts on top ot the usual times. I only have mine on for two hours a day now though Ihave had to have ti on more during this current cold spell as I was feeling ill from the cold

SushiWrap · 22/11/2024 16:11

It's set to come on at 14 but never does.

It's better for you to sleep in a cool room.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 22/11/2024 16:11

Ours is set to 15 overnight. It doesn't usually get cold enough to come on but it has this week.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/11/2024 16:11

It's off in the sense that the thermostat is set at well below any temperature I would expect it to get to in our house overnight. I hate sleeping in a centrally heated room and unless it's really cold, like this week, I also open the window slightly.

I wear fleecy PJs and have a thick duvet and a hot water bottle.

Cosycover · 22/11/2024 16:12

No because the noise of the heating keeps me awake.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 22/11/2024 16:12

Ours in on a timer, goes off about 11 and comes on about half hour before anyones alarm goes off. I have the bedroom window open at night even in sub-zero temps so it would be a complete waste of money

RamblasTapas · 22/11/2024 16:13

Ours is always off at night. I can't sleep if the heating is on!
My parents always did the same.

OatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 22/11/2024 16:13

We get too hot if it comes on at night. Thermostat gets turned down to 12 overnight.

HermoinePotter · 22/11/2024 16:15

We have log burners in 3 rooms downstairs and open fires in 2 rooms upstairs so the house is fairly warm most of the time, the heating clicks in when the temp reaches below 20 degrees all over the house. I hate being cold. Edited to add our heating runs 24/7 in winter and is never off.

HornyHornersPinger · 22/11/2024 16:15

Only when it's below freezing do I keep it on. Otherwise it's timed to stay off between 11pm-6am.

IMBCRound2 · 22/11/2024 16:15

thank you! On my post about heating I was basically told I was abusing my child not having the heating on at night . Duvet, blanket, hot water bottle ! Glad to hear others a have a similar attitude.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/11/2024 16:16

Heating turned down to 15 overnight, don't like been too warm at night. We all have winter duvets and blankets, plus dogs keep me warm.

NewGreenDuck · 22/11/2024 16:16

I have done the last few nights as it has been so cold. It's been turned down a notch and I then turn it up to a usual temp when I get up. I'm more concerned with the pipes freezing if the temp drops too much.

ScarletWitchM · 22/11/2024 16:17

No but when it’s really cold I have it timed to come on for an hour between 2-3am and then it’s on again before we get up to warm the house so 5-6am

Growlybear83 · 22/11/2024 16:17

Our heating is on a timer and is off from 11pm until 6 am, but when it's really cold we leave it on overnight. My husband is always paranoid about getting frozen pipes.

InvisibleBuffy · 22/11/2024 16:18

I'll put mine on in the middle of the night for a short time if it looks like it's going below zero and very cold because I worry about the pipes freezing, but otherwise, not at all.
I hate overheated houses, especially at night. They give me a headache.
I tend to sleep with the window open throughout most of winter. I hate not having fresh air. A snug duvet does the trick. I don't feel cold much at all.
It's about acclimatisation, really.
People who are used to cranking the heat are just used to having it like that. I don't think it's very healthy though and not great for the environment or the bank balance.

muddyford · 22/11/2024 16:18

Never. If I get chilly I just put a blanket over. I rarely leave the window shut either, though it's been on vent position the last few nights. I turn the thermostat down to 10C at night and turn it up about a quarter of an hour before I get up. But my parents didn't have double glazing or central heating until I was at university, and I was used to ice on the inside of the windows!
