Do you keep your heating on at night?

We were poor growing up and didn't have heating till I was quite old. I suspect that has rubbed off on me a bit Blush and even though I've got a good job and am doing ok, I always turn the heating off at night. My dc never complained. They are now adults themselves and also don't leave the heating on overnight.

Dp, however, thinks we are all total heathens. He claims to be freezing at night, his kids can't believe we turn it off. DD's boyfriend is also horrified by this. They argue that we are unusual in this respect.

Do people leave their heating on all night? Surely it's quite expensive to do so? I can understand if you're in a very cold house and you have a baby who you need to keep warm but barring that, are we the odd ones out here? If you are all leaving your heating on I may contemplate turning ours on at night when we have visitors Grin

God no, I'd wake up like a raisin

Never. If I get chilly I just put a blanket over. I rarely leave the window shut either, though it's been on vent position the last few nights. I turn the thermostat down to 10C at night and turn it up about a quarter of an hour before I get up. But my parents didn't have double glazing or central heating until I was at university, and I was used to ice on the inside of the windows!

so was I. It doesn't mean I liked it or would like it now.

We have our heating on from about 8am to 9pm. I wear fluffy socks in bed, and have got some teddy bear sheets

godmum56 · 22/11/2024 16:21

Isn't it funny? Those of us who have our heating on overnight or at least set to come on, don't tell others they should do it too, but SOME of those who choose not to have their heating on don't seem to think that others shouldn't do it either.

MasterShardlake · 22/11/2024 16:21

No, same as op no heating in house when I was a child so I sleep best in a cold room. Duvets and extra blankets when needed.
thermostat is set to frost protect 7C from 10pm to 6am.

lawlessland · 22/11/2024 16:21

We drop it very low just in case it's absolutely freezing but it very rarely comes on. I hate a stuffy house overnight and it gives me a headache.

Icanttakethisanymore · 22/11/2024 16:22

We have ours at 20 degrees constantly but we have underfloor downstairs which lends itself less well to being turning off and on. Previously where we’ve had rads throughout we switch it of while we’re in bed and set it to come on an hour or so before we get up.

Wellingtonspie · 22/11/2024 16:23

I even have my window open a crack 🤫 warmth and fresh air.

DustyLee123 · 22/11/2024 16:23

Ours goes off at 10pm. I also grew up with no heating.

TinyGingerCat · 22/11/2024 16:24

Nope - love a cold bedroom and a big duvet. Feel like I'm suffocating if the room is too hot. Window always open a bit. Thermostat is set to kick in if the sitting room drops below 14oC at night but our house is only 40 years old and well insulated so very rare that ever happens. The people keeping their houses at 18oC or higher in the night you must be dessicated! (And skint).

Fluufer · 22/11/2024 16:25

DH is from the tropics, and I grew up with a mother who insisted I was never really cold. Our heating is on as and when we want it on. Our house is well insulated so it stays warm without costing a fortune.

MillyVannily · 22/11/2024 16:25

I turn it off during the night because don't like the noise and it's waste of energy.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/11/2024 16:25

No, we always turn it off (via thermostat) when we go to bed. The house stays warm enough for nighttime, plus we have electric blankets. We’d find it too hot for sleeping with the heating on.

Womblingmerrily · 22/11/2024 16:25

Set to come on if drops below 7C overnight inside- has never come on.

Only turn it on during the afternoon/evening - up to 18C, was 17C last year but we've decided to be profligate.

People are busy/out in the morning generally.

sharpclawedkitten · 22/11/2024 16:26

No, heating is off between 9pm and 7am (and between 9am and 4pm).

BarbadosItsCloserThanYouThink · 22/11/2024 16:26

It's set to come on if the temperature falls below 16 overnight.

Matronic6 · 22/11/2024 16:26

I fall in the no heating at night camp. Wake up overheated and with a dry throat if it's on.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 22/11/2024 16:26

Ours is set to 15 degrees through the night.

It’s not too hard for it to top up to 18 ready for when we get up then.

niadainud · 22/11/2024 16:27

No, although I haven't had it on during the day yet. I do like a very thick duvet though.

Twiglets1 · 22/11/2024 16:27

Our heating goes off at 9pm and comes on again at 6am. I find the room gets too stuffy if heating left on overnight.

MaryGreenhill · 22/11/2024 16:27

No, we have never put the heating on overnight. I don't know how ppl can sleep with it on tbh .

scandiloving · 22/11/2024 16:28

Heating costs a lot, but my toddler won't sleep under a duvet, so we have the thermostat set to 19 at night purely for her comfort. Before she came along heating was off at night due to cost.

larkstar · 22/11/2024 16:28

No. Off 11pm-7am unless it's forecast to be something like -6C overnight in which case I'll leave it on but turn it down to 16C. During the day it's set to 18C but turned up to 19C around 6pm. One or both of us are at home during the day.

OchAyeTheN00 · 22/11/2024 16:28

Gets far too hot in bed with the heating on. Never have it on overnight. The thermostat is set to 16 and it doesn’t get that cold.

StormingNorman · 22/11/2024 16:29

I like a fresh bedroom. Still got my windows open.
