Because it portrays ordinary farmers being duped by the aristocratic overlords. Nothing could be further from the truth.

You mean they weren't duped ?

Willowkins · 23/11/2024 17:12

Nobody wants less. Not the rich, not the job creators, not the MPs, not the farmers, not the middle class, not the warehouse workers, couriers or hospital porters.
The difference is in what 'less' means for each of these groups.

Elodie09 · 23/11/2024 17:17

Very well said @Willowkins .

SerendipityJane · 23/11/2024 17:27

Nobody wants less.

That's not entirely true. There was (and presumably still is) a vocal minority who openly said they would be quite happy to be poorer if it meant we got to kick foreigners out when the Brexit vote happened.

As it happens, they got their wish. A triumph, really. Should be celebrated more I think. People who got exactly what they said they wanted.

It portrays everyone as duped by aristocratic overlords/the 1%. Which we are, and too many of us still doff our caps and fall for it, or go along with it out of blatant* *self interest .

This is mainly an English idea. I don’t remember my father and mother being duped by anyone. We paddled our own canoe. Yours is such a defeatist point of view.

BIWI · 23/11/2024 18:46

I think you have entirely missed the point of that article.

It's absolutely tragic. I work in SEND and it's a real battle to get our children what they need.

Same here.

17 years in same send school.

3 years of my own send child out of the system.

I've watched it get worse and worse.

Probably. Please explain.

itsgettingweird · 23/11/2024 18:49

If anyone hasn't yet watched last nights HIGNFY you should - we've just caught up here and laughed so hard!

Notonthestairs · 23/11/2024 18:57

Well I certainly think there is been a concerted effort by those with economic and political power to hang on to it. Why wouldn't they?

The point is that the same form of persuasion (frightening people) works now as then.

Is it? What % of people in the UK own which % of the wealth and land? Yoj sound perilously close yo saying that IF you don't do well, you must not have worked or tried hard. And until the UK gets to a decent level of social mobility, that simply isn't so.

Thanks for linking to this. I had been meaning to seek it out.

As an aside, this should be a reminder to developers and planners never to name streets after someone living.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 23/11/2024 22:14

This has made my day 🤣

Well who is say that Bob in Eritrea and Jane in Ecuador aren't very engaged voters who just happen to be on Race Across The World?

PandoraSox · 24/11/2024 09:52

PandoraSox · 24/11/2024 09:43

Actually to be fair I have realised this a small number of signatures. Also apparently they could be VPNs.

Zonder · 24/11/2024 09:57

I'm in awe @PandoraSox !

Efacsen · 24/11/2024 10:01

There's 3 petition threads now - all the same silly petition

One in News, one in Politics and one in Petitions which is surely the correct place for all of them

Notonthestairs · 24/11/2024 10:03

Having signed a few petitions over the years I know exactly how seriously previous administrations considered them.

Also seem to remember the Daily Mail & Guido Fawkes doing a hatchet job on the person that started the Brexit petition.

BestIsWest · 24/11/2024 10:23

I really think MN should gave some kind of ruling around first time posters. I’m not sure what, maybe they have to post in a specific topic the first time or something.

Yep. I have written the response to a few petitions and written briefs for the debates in response a few times. Just an everyday task.

DuncinToffee · 24/11/2024 10:34

Just wish them good luck and sit back with a cup of coffee and cake. No use even engaging with it BrewCake

Anyone got trouble from Bert this weekend? It isn't too bad here
