We've got a fence panel down. It was wobbly before and I knew my patch up was pretty useless. Am going to have to think of another way to fix it (or get someone in that knows what they are doing!)

Just wish them good luck and sit back with a cup of coffee and cake. No use even engaging with it BrewCake

Anyone got trouble from Bert this weekend? It isn't too bad here

Yep. You're right. Ignoring that thread now.

Loads of rain here, but no damage to anything.

countrygirl99 · 24/11/2024 10:49

I'm supposed to be helping at an equestrian event. Not only have most competitors had to pull out because it's not safe to tow a trailer but we've cancelled for the rest because the roof is lifting scarily.

Also ignoring now

Still pretty windy here but no driving rain or massive wind-chill today

Jason118 · 24/11/2024 11:23

I'm worried I won't finish my ark in time!

pointythings · 24/11/2024 11:26

Very warm and windy here. I drove home from Norwich this morning (had a fabulous party and treated myself to a hotel) and definitely felt it - my car isn't usually susceptible to wind at all.

The petition threads are hilarious. Nobody was posting that shite when the Tories were fucking it all up, their claims of 'oh but I think the Tories are just as bad' ring completely hollow.

SerendipityJane · 24/11/2024 11:36

Interesting 13C last night in Brum. But quite breezy.

It's axiomatic that areas with a maritime climate (British Isles raise their collective hands) will see more extreme swings in weather as more energy gets pumped into the climate system. We may not be the paradise refuge from the oncoming changes as some people assume.

Certainly I wouldn't stake my future on anything less than 30m above sea level.

It's entirely possible a lot of farmers won't have as much land in the future anyway.

There are a few newly minted/newly resurrected user names on that thread.

Thanks for linking to this. I had been meaning to seek it out.

As an aside, this should be a reminder to developers and planners never to name streets after someone living.

"[Jeremy Clarkson] has a slightly vested interest in this." "Very few farmers are affected by inheritance tax." Jeremy Clarkson is not the saviour of farming communities he's made out to be, Ian Hislop says.

My only plans were to walk the dog. Unfortunately, she's a fair weather dog and it's pissing it down and windy so we are staying home and shutting out the world.
No damage here fortunately.
Ds2 has an hour drive later down country lanes, so I hope it starts to die down soon.

I’m 27m above! 1km from the local estuary. On top of a hill. I fully expect to be cut off one day.

@BestIsWest I hope you've got a boat and come and rescue me please

I was amused driving down in Florida to see houses on stilts with boats tied up underneath.

The UK will be fine though. What with our level of expertise and forward planning for all of society - nothing to worry about. It's the countries with pisspoor leadership and elites with vested interests carving things up for themselves I feel sorry for.

A new built estate near us is dubbed little venice. The fields it is built on were always flooded after heavy rain but now it's the nearby road that turns into a canal. And people still drive through it.

We are slightly higher

Land prone to flooding is incredibly cheap. What better way to make money if you can build houses on it and kneecap the planning regulations to disguise flood risks. Especially if you were told that a flood is a 1 in a 100 year occurrence.

Having toured a plethora of new builds for a few years, I think it's safe to say that iron age roundhouses were better quality.

cardibach · 24/11/2024 12:18

Bert wasn’t a s bad as advertised here. I had a friend staying and we managed to get out and about with some ducking into places to avoid the worst. Warm and not too windy. Seems rainier today. I’m off out later to take rescue dogs to the arena to meet rock stars. It’s one of the more surprising aspects of volunteering at the dogs’ home. I met Danny O’Donoghue last week.

I'm 65m apparently, and halfway up a hill. I think that building new builds on flood plains in fine, I think the footings and lower floors should have some kind of flood control though, so decent drainage systems as part of the design. That might actually make them worth the stupid prices they sell for.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 24/11/2024 12:33

We live on a street that floods. House next door is up for sale and our neighbour was very pleased that one potential buyer was realistic enough to ask 'how far up does the water get?' rather than 'does the road flood?' 🤣.
Picture of the road a few years ago.
Unfortunately the Jubilee River put the houses downstream of it in a much worse position...

It's a balmy 16 degrees here in Sarf Lunnun! Shock
But very blustery.

BIWI · 24/11/2024 12:40

And just what do you think is wrong with that quote, @derxa? Do you really think that JC is 'the saviour' of farming?

PandoraSox · 24/11/2024 12:42

I see there is a lot of slavering on the petitions thread about the forthcoming white paper Get Britain Working.

It is a bit tricky for them as they don't really want to support anything the governmendieies, even though they all hate benefit claimants. The line seems to be that benefit claimants are all Labour supporters who thought Labour would look after them and will now get their just desserts for daring not to vote Tory.

DuncinToffee · 24/11/2024 12:43

That petition is promoted by an extremely dodgy X account
