I am so fucking upset at that even the new government keeps on with the negative narrative around immigration. Sure, I agree that there are issues, but as an immigrant who is a teacher in a shortage subject and is sticking with the horrendous jobs while others are leaving in droves, and been in this country since childhood, and contributed so damn much… still no word of acknowledgment or thanks from the politicians. They keep painting us as undesirable, undeserving, enemies with sharp teeth and forky tails.

just sick of it now.

Well said

I've just heard my MP speak in the debate. I disagree with him, I don't think he gave a good argument, buying into the idea rather than what is in front of him now.
I've been disappointed with his lack of response to my emails, and despite me being very active in another area, and pulling together information and supporting many of his constituents through an issue, he/ his office has fobbed me of and failed to provide updates.

I appear to have gone from one God awful toe the party line at any cost MP, to one who is refusing to engage with constituents in a meaningful way. I'm trying to be generous as he is still finding his feet, but find an automated message saying there are 400 emails a day disingenuous- hire more staff if needed. Until he gets a grip, we effectively have no voice. I have no idea if he had read my email, on today's issue, but he said nothing to reassure me that he had any understanding of my concerns.

I maintain that bringing this bill at this time with a vast number of inexperienced MPs is the wrong thing to do. It is a seismic shift in our society and should be given the respect that it deserves. They are giving lots of emotive examples, but this needs to be put to one side and the nuts and bolts of how this would work in practice, from the bill in front of them considered. This bill is not fit for purpose, I don't think it will help those at the very end who will be too weak to self administer, or those at the beginning for whom 6 months is a binary figure.
The bill allows for challenges to clauses which will smash the attempts at safeguarding, and leave it open to abuse.

The MPs talking about line by line scrutiny are ignoring that this is a members bill which doesn't allow for this. They seem to be showing a certain amount of naivety around parliamentary process, and sticking their fingers in their ears to block out the reminders. They show they are incapable of listening when they continue with this fiction. It is incredibly concerning.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2024 13:46

My MP has not said anything on the subject on SM, haven't seen his name being mentioned in the debate either.

Sorry, that was long and rambling, but the quality of debate on such a seismic piece of legislation is incredibly poor, and many MPs are caught up in the emotive stuff, putting this first and foremost, when their job, is to be aware of the background that drives the debate, but to debate the actual bill, not the reasons for it.

Heidi Alexander becomes transport secretary

She first became a Labour MP in 2010, but left parliament in 2018 to work for Sadiq Khan as deputy London mayor for transport. She became an MP again at the 2024 election.

With Heidi Alexander replacing Louise Haigh as transport secretary, the cabinet is now 100% state school educated for the first time in history.

(Sir Keir Starmer's school was a selective state school when he joined, then became private two years into his time there.)

For someone who has a long term painful health condition, AJ has an abysmal voting record on supporting people like her. Probably one of the 'well, I can do it, therefore so should everyone else' brigade.

Saucery · 29/11/2024 14:02

Not rambling at all, excellent points! I’m sure my MP mentioned extra staff to keep up with the volume of correspondence at one point, but of course that would just be for her office. It is a bit like after 14 years of not being listened to incoming Labour MPs were surprised that so many people want to talk to them.

Interesting that someone is withdrawing their click on the Thanks button on here. I have a feeling that the default name you post from is the only one that Thanks on all threads, even if you have nc for different ones. Grin

Can you explain how anyone on a written forum can ‘talk over’ anyone? Everyone can get their full say, it’s just people won’t always agree with what you write.

Or eventually just scroll on by ...

People really do seem to think that a right to free speech is a right to be listened to. It isn't.

PandoraSox · 29/11/2024 14:14

@Llttledrummergirl I agree with everything you have said.

I see Corbyn has said he will vote against it as well.

The problem is the majority of the media finds it profitable to take that line on immigration. The public wants what the public gets and all that.

To try and tack against this is simply to play into the hands of the plutocrats who'd love a government in their image.

The best way to counter that problem is to quietly fix all the problems without a word. In fact, if I were a strategy advisor, I would advise the government to go with the flow on the rhetoric about immigration while quietly acting in reverse.

Which is almost the diametric opposite of the Tory strategy of doing fuck all whilst shouting about how much they were doing.

Politics is a dirty game. Not to be followed if you have morals, ethics or a weak stomach.

BREAKING: MPs vote in favour of Assisted Dying by 330 to 275

ContactNightmare · 29/11/2024 14:26

Wow.

PandoraSox · 29/11/2024 14:26

I honestly don't know how to feel. It is still a long way from becoming legislation, but I feel many MPs have brushed aside the concerns of vulnerable people and the people who care for them.

Llttledrummergirl · 29/11/2024 14:27

Fuck it.

Saucery · 29/11/2024 14:27

That vote saddens me. I am so worried about the impact on vulnerable people.

grannycake · 29/11/2024 14:28

I'm so pleased with this. This gives more time for amendments to allay some of the concerns mentioned today. Having watched someone die a really painful death I want this option if I was ever in that situation

Llttledrummergirl · 29/11/2024 14:28

I can't even write how I feel, I'm too upset. They have failed to do their job and scrutinise the bill, and they have let us down.

Llttledrummergirl · 29/11/2024 14:29

Grannycake, there is no time for amendments, it's a private members bill.

DuncinToffee · 29/11/2024 14:30

There is still a long way to go but I also agree with the vote.

Grannycake, there is no time for amendments, it's a private members bill.

There will be amendments and a redraft for the Committee stage. This bill is nowhere near finished. It will now go to parliamentary counsel for drafting.

There's a man goin' 'round takin' names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won't be treated all the same
There'll be a golden ladder reachin' down
When the man comes around
