Half of British firms will cut jobs following budget tax hikes.
CBI

The amount of sanity checking that statement has to bypass to be even vaguely credible is astounding.

I wonder if someone has done some shonky extrapolation for a cheap headline ?

DuncinToffee · 25/11/2024 13:55

Badenoch

"let's be honest, some jobs are productive and some less so".

Wants before policies a proper diagnosis of what has gone wrong with productivity and investment. But she's sure we're trying to fix with the wrong tools

By which she means: rules, quangos and so forth. Government needs to be more responsive in eg planning. HMT rules just stop stopping railways.

"To get real growth we need to change the things we all do, and that's what the Conservatives are all about" is the slightly counterintuitive finish.

Refuses in Q&A to commit to reversing the NICs rise. And won't tell Simon Jack which tax she'd "tweak" to fix the black hole, going into a diversion into the football regulator. £30bn is no "tweak"...

It’s from my Bloomberg terminal, but perhaps you know better.

I know better than to trust a single sentence statement with fuck all very little context. The pre-internet adage of "poster proves" is alive and kicking in 2024.

Given you would rightly check veracity anyway, Google remains your trusty friend.

Badenoch speaking at the CBI - just a matter of time before she says something 'unpleasant' which requires her to clarify [tone down/contradict] what she really meant

Probably. She can't help herself.

I'm not doubting it came from Bloomberg - everyone needs clicks these days.

However I am sceptical that it actually meant that. Because even at the height of the Trussterfuck when the economy really was on the brink, there wasn't quite that level of hysteria.

It's hard to avoid a conclusion that the UK is being bombarded with a firestorm of media frenzy aimed at preventing the elected government making any progress. A conspiraloon might suggest this is the whole country getting a Putinesque punishment beating for daring to refuse to bend to the right wing wave that wants to engulf the globe.

I see.

Or more prosaically, there is a genuine belief that HMG are taking us down a road to ruin.

Llttledrummergirl · 25/11/2024 14:36

The conspiraloons (love this, it's very apt), are busy trying to pretend that there is no foreign interference in UK politics, despite much evidence to show there is. That way (as per the above petition) they can claim the population hates labour, and undermine the changes being made while denying it's happening.

DuncinToffee · 25/11/2024 14:38

So Badenoch is refusing to commit to reversing employers national insurance rise

Different when it applies to Labour activist going to the US though......

The sky has been falling in since I was a child.

Llttledrummergirl · 25/11/2024 14:46

Foreign interference is apparently alive and kicking in America, unless Trump is elected, and then it no longer exists.

Facts are only facts if they fit the agenda.

Why on earth would she ? Even the thickest Tory leader knows they need to have some cash in the kitty of they win power to shovel to all their mates. Why make your own life difficult ?

I think St. Kemi (and her elk) were perfectly unmasked as wanting all the nice things Labour are doing without the bother of actually paying for it. The magic money tree again.

BIWI · 25/11/2024 14:50

Loving the idea of Kemi having her own elk Grin

CBI

Ooh reminds me of Lord Fumbleton.

Willowkins · 25/11/2024 15:47

You know I like to check these things out.
The CBI opinion is based on a survey they launched on 30 October and ending on 5 November. Unfortunately we do not know how the questions were framed or how many responded (to help us judge whether the questions were leading or how representative the respondents are).
I do think job losses are possible though. I winced when RR said businesses would have to step up - that doesn't seem at all likely when bonuses and shareholder payouts are at stake.
Also, I would like charities to be exempt.

ContactNightmare · 25/11/2024 15:53

Reeves is taking a risk. We will see if it pays off. I too am a bit skeptical on the jobs v profits angle. History tells you the jobs go before the profits do.

However the CBI are literally trying to drag themselves back into respectability and relevancy so less interested in their take.

Badenoch was blurgh. Given her own record there is every chance she will be giving the same speech in a year.

As I suspected ...

Also, I would like charities to be exempt.

Charities haven't really covered themselves in glory of late. It's not just the whole Captain Tom business - the whole charity sector seems a bit iffy.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 25/11/2024 16:09

You can seek to explain away every headline as you wish.

I cannot stress this enough however -
from where I sit - in finance - job losses are happening. Fine you say. Unfortunately, these are the broadest shoulders Reeves needs.

Dont say you weren’t warned.
