What's for dinner this week?

Hey all,

I'm into an 'everything is boring and repetitive' meals cycle again so want to ask, what are the next meals you've planned or will be having this week?

In our home there's 2 adults (share the cooking) two teens and one smaller child. So anything that is a meal that goes quite far is willingly accepted as an idea! Usually spend about half an hour cooking in the evenings.

Ideas please?

We usually have on an average week
Pasta with sauce / garlic bread
Fajitas/ enchiladas/ quesadillas
Curry and rice
Fish and veg
Full English
Roast
Pizza (sometimes bought sometimes I make them)

OP posts:

haven't planned any further ahead as trying not to waste food and I'm out for dinner Wed & Sat

I'm going out for dinner after work tonight but @MiddleAgedDread has made we want to have chicken sausages with roasted veg which I'll have tomorrow.

GiddyRobin · 19/11/2024 16:14

Tonight I'm making a spiced lentil soup, and tomorrow a French onion soup. Yesterday was a regular lentil soup. 😂 That's a lot, but it's snowing (and I'm recovering from a bad flu) and I've gone soup mad and been given some amazing recipes.

I don't plan ahead often for meals, but I do usually keep a note of what I've made so we don't get bored. So the last week I recorded was this:

Salmon, hasslebacked potatoes with dill and chive butter, asparagus, and a white wine and dill sauce.

Homemade Pho with prawns and a medley of veg and noodles. It changes all of the time tbh, DH makes this and does the broth, etc.

Homemade pizza.

Cod, new potatoes, tenderstem broccoli, peas, and fried tomatoes.

Prawns in garlic, coriander, chili butter with sweet potato fries, salad, and pitta bread.

Cod baked in the oven in a parcel with olives, rocket, and lemon. Tray bake of spiced (but not spicy) carrot, parsnip, sweet potato, onion. Threw in some baby tomatoes at the end.

Mussels (in shells) in a white wine sauce (garlic butter sauce for the kids), with linguine. Tossed some roasted courgette and asparagus through there too, and warm buttered baguettes.

Looking at your list, I'd add Pad Thai, salmon fillets with eg pesto spread on top and baked, with rice, sausages and mash/sweet potato fries, and eggs in purgatory by Nigella for an easy Sunday night.

sprigatito · 19/11/2024 17:56

Our meals are boring and predictable at the moment because we have my dad living with us and he has eating issues, so it's more important that he gets his calories than that we have an exciting diet. An average week includes:

Cottage pie with cabbage and gravy
Bangers and mash with peas and gravy
Steak pie with broccoli and gravy
Spaghetti bolognaise with grated cheese
Chilli with rice
Jacket potatoes with chilli/cheese/tuna mayonnaise
Fish, chips and mushy peas

Occasionally I will opt out and have soup or a salad, but generally he only wants to eat if we all together so I just go with it. He doesn't eat chicken or fish unless it's in batter 😂

Wiskeydour · 19/11/2024 17:57

Maccaroni cheese
Butternut squash chilli
Lasagna
Stilton and broccoli soup
Salmon, chips and minted peas

frozendaisy · 19/11/2024 18:00

just put a (soya mince) cottage pie in oven, base has onion, carrot, peas, topped with buttery mash potato.
yesterday was left over roast pork curry and rice
tomorrow is middle eastern rice, tahini sauce, crispy onions, tomato/avocado salad
thursday, fish, probably salmon as it's the only oily fish everyone can agree on, with paprika/garlic/chilli roast new potatoes and steamed green beans
friday home made pizza
saturday mexican
sunday roast

think that's this week

Sourisblanche · 19/11/2024 18:04

M - salmon, chickpea curry and cous cous
T - bean burgers, fries and homemade winter coleslaw
W - some sort of pasta sauce to use up crème fraiche
T - don’t know
F - homemade pizzas with broccoli spears
S - dd making her pesto to go on pasta probs
S - don’t know

Not terribly exciting.

frozendaisy · 19/11/2024 18:06

basically we like a mix of cuisines around the world
louisana cajun sausage is basically a risotto/paella type of affair but with america flavours
Indian is easy, currys
middle east have many more fragrant less spicy dishes
everyone loves mexican/south american, beef, beans, avocado, garlic, coriander are your flavours
italian is comforting
greek is fresh, lighter but a favourite here
thai is fresher curries with a lot of coconut milk included

and we are just getting into african - a lot hotter than most cuisines, but roasting the chicken with african flavours, building up is a newish fad

love falafel, not sure who invented but it's hard to disagree that it didn't come from Egypt

So we tend to get a bit obsessed with one continent and then once mastered one/two/three dishes become part of the routine rota.

only cuisine that I find really hard is French, don't like cream in cooking to be honest might look again.

Lifeglowup · 19/11/2024 18:10

I love these threads! I had meal planning.

  • lamb burgers with paranip and carrot chips and tzakizi (sp?)
  • vegetarian enchiladas
  • slow cooker vegetable stew with dumplings
  • chicken pasta
  • pollo pesto rice
  • chicken pad thai

We don’t normally have this much chicken but I was running out of ideas.

This week for us is:
Melt in the middle fish cakes, wedges and salad.
Chicken ramen
Fajitas
Curry and rice
Roast chicken dinner
Cottage pie and veg.

All fairly standard but we are definitely in a dinner rut so going to be stealing some ideas from here...

Teachymummy · 19/11/2024 18:13

We get hello fresh 3 nights a week to get out of a rut and take off some of the mental load.

This week we've got BBQ chicken and rice, loaded naans, and pork pasta.

We usually have pizza on a Friday.
